This is part two for my client that grilled me on how to do my job as an SEO Rockstar.

"Where's my Meta Tags for Keywords?" You don't need them. She didn't believe me.

Lo and behold I do some SEO scouting for my Ohio Client and ta-daaaaaa. This site was designed on purpose to NOT have any traditional metas. Yet it still ranks page one #9 out of 4.5 million.

Proof in the pudding as Barbara Corcoran likes to say. Google it yourself:  cincinnati REOs

MyCincinnatiForeclosures.com is page one, #9.

Now sniff the source code and see the NON-EXISTING meta tags.  I have a nice Title and this is all. NO METAs. Like I said to my client today -- we DON'T NEED THEM.

Page one #9 and climbing is nice.

This was designed as a stealth website for my Ohio Client, Treo Realtors who specializes in cincinnati real estate homes for sale.

Danny Sullivan said it right in 2002. Google meta keywords are dead. They are not used anymore by Google. And this website is proof positive all of you can now let go of SEO Myth #17. You need meta keywords to rank high on Google? It's a myth. You can now see it with your own eyes.

This technique is covered in my Do It Yourself SEO Book for $49.95 if you call me. If you go to www.QuickAudioBooks.com, the book is still for sale at $149 and includes an Audio Book.  I am firing my publisher and dropping the price of the book and audio CD to $49.95 for the first 100 Active Rainer members that call me.

meta tags lost their importance once Google arrived on the scene.  There may be some who don't remember life pre-Google.

Hi Rich,

I asked my last class of SEO REALTORS who attended my workshop at Inman Connect two years ago. Out of the 300 plus faces in the room, I asked the question; "How many of you think METAs are important for your ranking on Google?" More than 200 of them put their hands up.

It's a myth. But now that MSN owns Yahoo, there is some rumour that changes in how the two share technology and what emphasis they place on will affect both of these two portals. But since more than 74% of our traffic comes from Google, any work we do for Yahoo ranking is a pure waste of time unless you are a Prudential agent. All leads on Yahoo go to Prudential. Has been that way since they signed on with Yahoo in 2001.

Nuff said..

Hey Barbara,

You are welcome. It's a really common myth on SEO. If you are going to add METAs, the only one you need today is the stamp for META DESCRIPTION = and that is where you place your one sentence description of what the website dies and offers. Remember to think like a librarian and write a description like you'd be describing your website as a BOOK on an index card.

Refrain from using words like BEST or Premiere, and now you have to be careful about using words like ERA, Century 21, Coldwell Banker and the other brands in your AdWords Ads as Google will want to verify and prove that you ARE legally licensed and able to use the brand in your business ad.

As with the Autumn months, things are changing and so is Google. You must know the rules if plan to see your website at the top page search results pages on Google.

Wow. This is such an interesting post. I too had always believed that meta tags were so critically important. I do have a question tho; I've seen a few websites that are ranking really high yet when I look at their content, there's almost little to nothing there (outside of images, which I know have alt tags). That said, I thought surely that they were getting that ranking based on their meta tags. I'm so confused.

Hi Kathy,

Google has certain "grand-fathered," sites. That being the domain name was in use and older Google rules applied at the time. This is why you may find a really crappy looking website for Re/Max, C21 or some independent broker-REALTOR site that ranks on page one #3 when you search for "atlanta homes for sale" or "atlanta real estate," for example.

Rule of thumb: If you do not have a top page rank right now on Google for a natural key word search, it is going to be a long longer, and a lot more expensive to get your site there.

However, there are short cuts that are SEO White Hat friendly and work really well. For example, go to Sedo.com or GreatDomains.com and look up the domains in the $300 - $500 range. Short domains with the words: REAL ESTATE or HOMES or HOMEFINDER or SELECT, etc. are great choices. For example, these would be great domain name choices for Atlanta right now:

1.) AtlantaHomeFinders.com or MyAtlantaHomefinder.com

2.) AtlantaSelect.com or AtlantaMoves.com

etc., etc. You get the idea.

Bart - so if you have a field on every single page on your website to put in meta keywords and meta description what do you do? Put nothing on the keywords? put the same thing on each page? I too have read from so many places - not really about the keywords but the desription being very important ! Sheesh. ~Rita
