Public Restrooms and The Spread of Germs

faucetAs we all hear reports on the news about this falls flu season and H1N1 we all know the importance of frequent hand washing and that the length of time one actually spends washing their hands is important as well.  One thing I never hear mentioned is the fact that you can spend all that time washing your hands and then once you are done you touch the handle of the faucet to turn it off (the one you used with dirty hands to turn it on), you then touch the handle of the towel release to get a towel, then you grip the door handle to get out of the public bathroom (the same door you and others used to get in with dirty hands).  Aren't there germs on these places?  And haven't I just re-infected my hands?  I get confused on this point....

HANDWASHING

Great post.  Wash your hands, touch the lever, rewash your hands and use the paper towel to get out the door.

Another place to watch for germs is the floor rooms in our real estate offices. Small spaces, phones, pens, etc. all harbor those nasty buggers. We've put containers of disinfecting wipes in our floor room in an effort to keep us all as well as possible.

Plus, we've decided if anyone walks in the door ready to work, but sounds like they'd better be in bed instead, then off they go, out the door and back home!

Gloria,

I would say most people do not wash their hands long enough.  My sister works for the health department and she said the best defense is working at staying healthy.

Flu season is here!

Sharon, Yes I see people doing that, great idea.  I like the rest rooms where there are motion sensors which eliminate contact with many surfaces, but that is costly.  Thanks.

Dee, So right. In our office there is a container of disinfectant wipes for those who want to use it.  Good to have options for those who want it!  And sending co-workers home who need to be is a good idea.  Thanks.

Michelangelo, No living in a bubble would not be fun.  Reminds me of something I read about a boy in the 1970's or 80's who was born without a fully functioning immune system and he had to live in a bubble of sorts.  Very hard and expensive.  And yes "we can only do what we can do".   Thanks.

Ann,  So true, about most people not washing their hands long enough, I've heard, hum all the abc's as you wash to ensure enough time.  And yes eating right, regular exercise and all the good things we can do for ourselves is always the best first defense.  Thanks so much.
