Who doesn't like to go to the Zoo -and what visit of any city would be complete without going to its City Zoo? (no sooner did I write that then I realized that of course there will be those that don't agree with zoo's.........but that's a topic for another day).......

"And that's what I'll do,

Said young Gerald McGrew.

If you want to catch beasts you don't see everyday,

You have to go places quite out-of-the way."

 Dr. Seuss

The Toronto Zoo with over 710 acres and over 5,000 animals .......with over 10km of walking trails is one of the largest zoos in the world! And the blisters on my feet can attest to that!  When I asked Rachel what she wanted to do (as we tried to cram as much as we could in my 8 days in Toronto), she said 'let's go to the zoo!.

So once again Sylvie Conde came by and picked us up and off to Scarborough we went.  Another gorgeous sunny day in a string of sunny days - the best of the summer from what I was told.

Download Toronto Zoo site map!

Our adventure started a Camel ride for Rachel andTouching Experience with the Stingrays.....

Can you see them? Damn I can't either - the ripples in the water showed up like this - but have a look at Sylvie's post on the Zoo- Going Wild at the Toronto Zoo- her pics turned out much better!  Cow nose and southern stingrays swirled by as we reaching out to stroke their smooth silky backs.......the polar bear   - largest carnivores in the world - and I'm sure would much prefer a seal to those little fish they get thrown for the show...

Rach wanted to see the hippo's more then anything - but alas when we found him he was a pygmy hippo!

masai giraffe - did you know they were the tallest animals in the world - me?  - I always think of Jerome the Giraffe from the Friendly Giant series of long ago.........now what's with those eyelashes eh?

 And one of my favorites...

Which do you think came first the white stripes or the black ones? :-)

But for this go around - the Zoo Emmy had to go to...

Hi Liz-Great job on these photos. Sounds like you and Rachel had a power packed 8 days. What memories you built as mother and daughter. Very nice. I remember petting a stingray years ago. They feel so soft. Thank you for sharing your wonderful pics. Have a great week. <SMILE>

Hi Liz... it looks like you had a fun zoo visit, and that the turtles had some fun of their own!  :)

Liz, these are beautiful pictures and I would love to have a trip to the zoo such as this. The closest I've gotten to a zoo lately is WalMart! Ha! It looks just wonderful~Hugs my friend, Deb

Liz - Isn't our zoo fabulous in Scarberia? (as we Torontonians affectionately call Scarborough, even though it is no longer in the boonies)

It's open all year.  I believe there is cross country skiing in the winter.  The fall colours at the zoo are fabulous.

Awww. I love the hippo! He looks so sweet... although I'm sure "sweet" is not even on the short-list of defining words for hippos. LOL. And I don't think I've ever read that Dr. Seuss book either; which really surprises me. When my daughter was little, I had a Dr. Suess subscription. We got a book every other week and read them all the time... unless that zoo line is part of Horton Hears a Hoo?

Oh, and I swear. Every time I see those giant turtles somewhere, they're always doing the nasty. he he.

Liz,

Very nice. This reminds me that I haven't been to the Zoo in years. I'm going to have to take a very small person with me, someone who will be most impressed with all the animals. That's one of the advantages of grandchildren.

Woohoo!  I love zoos!  These pics are fantastic!  NC has a wonderful Zoo but doesn't compare to some that I have seen around the world. Anyhow, looks like you had an awesome time.

Liz - What a wonderful experience for you and what a tour guide you had in Sylvie, she certainly knows Toronto and how to look after a fellow rainer. The Toronto Zoo used to play a big part in our lives as both of our twin daughters worked their driving the monorail train as teenagers.

Hi Liz, I love the photos - especially the polar bears, they are my favorite.  And I just commented about giraffe's eyelashes on another post here - they have the prettiest eyelashes!  Looks like you had a great time!

I went to the Toronto Zoo when I was there back in 1995.

The polar bears at the San Diego Zoo like to eat carrots:

Our big hippos are out at the Wild Animal Park while the pigmy hippos are at the Zoo.

Have you been to the Vancouver Zoo? I like the Calgary Zoo better. I wish I had seen the Toronto Zoo when I was there.
