Did you know that in Korea 'dog' is still served as a Meal in Restaurants? I was catching up on my LA Times reading today and I was so shocked at what  I read in the September 4th Issue of the LA Times  written by John Glionna & Ju-Min Park of Seoul, South Korea, I had to post this. Some of you might not want to read this, others of you might want to take action and others of you might just want to spread the word.

The Hero of the story is Lee Won-Bok, he is a 45 year old animal rights activist. Every Saturday he places very graphic pictures (I opted not to post pictures) at a busy mall depicting images of dogs in cages, to different stages of the process all the way to the Restaurant table. (I will not describe the graphic parts you get the idea) He is a one man warrior. He says he has collected over 300,000 signatures over a period of nine years.

The Goal is to stop the despicable tradition of eating cats and dogs. Even though national laws prohibit the eating of these critters, the government rarely enforces it.

I was so outraged about this activity; I had to write about it. How could a society still allow, tolerate such activity? How could anyone have their pets at home and then go out to a Restaurant and eat "boshintang" (dog soup)? How could a Government, Politicians and Judicial members still allow this despicable practice? How could a society still tolerate this?  How could we stand by and not do something? I urge each and all of you to take action, how ever small or large.

As a caretaker of three cats and supporter of Local Animal Rescue Organizations I have to speak out against this deplorable practice and the lack of caring by a Society and its People. I commend Lee Won-bok and the two LA Times Reporter John Glionna & JU-Min Park in spreading his crusade. Too bad the LA Times only put this on page 26 rather then the front page.

I am glad I had dinner before I read this.  Makes me want to stay home...It will not be easy to stop this practice except by setting an example of taking the best care of our pets.  Interesting post.

Hey, Endre - Did you miss the stories about dog served in Chinese restaurants prior to the 2008 Beijing Olympics? A couple of reporters had heard that the Chinese goverment was putting a moratorium on certain restaurant menu items within a certain number of miles of the Olympic Village and any Olympic venues elsewhere in the country. So the reporters went over there a few months prior to the Olympics and found all sorts of interesting things on the menu, including dog.

I don't fault their society, though, because they have a billion people and dog has always been part of their sustenance. No difference, really, than me eating pigs and cattle which are forbidden in other societies due to religion.

I'd like to see China have enough food to feed all their citizens without the need to eat dogs, but that's probably not going to happen anytime soon. After all, they have a billion people. We only have 350 million people in the United States and we have lots of people starving in our own back yard.

Nonetheless, I love my fine furry friends and could never eat them. In fact, I don't think I could consciously visit a country as a tourist if I knew that country served dog or cat on the menu.

Endre, people in Belgium eat horses.  Unfortunately those horses, for the most part, come from this country.  Our three horse slaugherhouses recently closed, so now our horses are shipped to Mexico or Canada for slaughter.  The ENTIRE concept of eating any animal is disgusting, and testimony to just how cruel and insane "humans" are.  I've seen some of those graphic pictures.  You should have posted them.  WE need educating in this country and pictures usually do the trick.

Hi Sandra, sorry to ruing your after dinner relaxation on AR. I am just so outraged, that this practice continues. There is just no justification for this, we are in 2009, not in the 1700's.

Hi Russell, I agree  with you about not wanting to visit and hence support those countries that serve Pets on their Menu. I do not accept the justification that they have to feed their people....Look at India, where people are starving, inspite of that they respect the Cows and other animals and do not eat them.

Terry, I understand Horse is also on the Menu in France. How sad. I think as a species we have a long way to go.Thank you for your input.
