A couple of months ago I had the pleasure of meeting Dennis Volz, a State Farm Insurance agent and member of ActiveRain. I was even able to send him some business, but since the purchase didn't go through, I guess he didn't get to write a policy. I'll keep trying though.
Dennis sends out the best, most informative post cards. Always something good. One of the best listed all the dog beaches and parks in San Diego County. Since many people living in Mission Valley condos have dogs, I thought my blog would be a great place to put a list of the dog beaches and parks, and then I can just point anyone here for the answer to "Where can I take my dog?"
So here you go, and thanks again to Dennis Volz:
- Carlsbad - Ann L'Heureux Memorial Dog Park - Carlsbad Village Drive a half mile east of El Camino Real. Benches, dog drinking fountain, and plastic bag dispensers.
- Carlsbad - Carlsbad Dog Park - Carlsbad Village Drive at Appian Road. This park is covered with wood chips and includes water and doggie bags.
- Carlsbad - Hidden Canyon Park and Dog Park - 2685 Vancouver Street. Formerly known as Larwin Park. Carlsbad's first dog park.
- Cardiff-by-the-Sea - Cardiff State Beach - A leash-only beach one mile south of Cardiff on Old Highway 101.
- Coronado - Coronado Beach - Ocean Boulevard near Sunset Park. It's the most northern end of the beach next to the Naval Air Station and is great for big dogs liking to play in the waves.Del Mar - Dog Beach - This is a seasonal off-leash beach from September to June, i.e., non-tourist season. Parking is difficult.
- El Cajon - Wells Park - 1153 E. Madison Avenue. Has dual drinking fountains for pets and owners. Off-leash area open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and is lighted for night use.La Jolla - La Jolla Shores Beach - Leashed dogs allowed on the beach and at the adjacent Kellogg Park from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
- La Mesa - Harry Griffen Park - 9550 Milden Street. One acre for off-leash dogs.
- Poway - Poway Dog Park - 13094 Bowron Road. Almost two acres. Fenced, lighted, and off leash area. Park is open from sunrise to sunset, but lights in the dog park are on until 9:30 p.m
- San Diego - Fiesta Island in Mission Bay - The whole island is leash-free and the waters are calm so that dogs and dog owners can have a little wet and wild fun.
- San Diego - Dog Beach in Ocean Beach - I think this is the oldest dog beach in San Diego and very popular. It's a sandy area at the north end of Ocean Beach.
- San Diego - Mission Beach - Can be very crowded since Mission Beach is very popular.
- San Diego - Rancho Bernardo Park in Rancho Bernardo - 18448 W. Bernardo Drive. 2½ acres of room for dogs to roam leash free.
- San Diego - Nate's Point in Balboa Park - Balboa Drive at El Prado, on the south side of the Cabrillo Bridge. Large grassy lawn open 24 hours. Lots of ball dogs, frisbee dogs, and social dogs.
- San Diego - Morley Field in Balboa Park - East side of Balboa Park near the tennis courts. Great for residents of North Park.
- San Diego - Cadman Community Park in Clairemont - 4280 Avati Drive. Unfenced and currently undergoing renovation and updating.
- San Diego - Capehart Park in Pacific Beach/La Jolla - Felspar at Soledad Mountain Road. This park has two fenced areas, one for small dogs, and one for large dogs. Open 24 hours, and has dog water areas, drinking fountain, picnic tables, benches, and parking.
- San Diego - Grape Street Park in Balboa Park - Grape Street at Granada Avenue. A big 5-acre unfenced site. Off-leash hours are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m, Saturday/Sunday/Holidays from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
- San Diego - Kearny Mesa Community Park - Near Mesa College. 3170 Armstrong Street. 1 acre for all dogs.
- San Diego - Doyle Community Park - 8175 Regents Road. One fenced are for small dogs and one for large dogs. Open 24 hours but not lighted.
- San Diego - Dusty Rhodes Neighborhood Park - Sunset Cliffs Boulevard between Nimitz and W. Point Loma. One acre. Might expand to five acres soon.
- San Diego - Rancho Peñasquitos Park in Rancho Peñasquitos - Salmon River Road at Fairgrove Lane across the street from the Rancho Peñasuitos Library. One acre with two fenced areas for small dogs and large dogs. Open 24 hours.
