San Diego's Mission Valley condos with Realtor Jim Frimmer: Dog beaches and parks

If you leave a comment, Jim will visit your blog and comment.A couple of months ago I had the pleasure of meeting Dennis Volz, a State Farm Insurance agent and member of ActiveRain. I was even able to send him some business, but since the purchase didn't go through, I guess he didn't get to write a policy. I'll keep trying though.

Dennis sends out the best, most informative post cards. Always something good. One of the best listed all the dog beaches and parks in San Diego County. Since many people living in Mission Valley condos have dogs, I thought my blog would be a great place to put a list of the dog beaches and parks, and then I can just point anyone here for the answer to "Where can I take my dog?"

So here you go, and thanks again to Dennis Volz:

  1. Ball dog at the beachCarlsbad - Ann L'Heureux Memorial Dog Park - Carlsbad Village Drive a half mile east of El Camino Real. Benches, dog drinking fountain, and plastic bag dispensers.
  2. Carlsbad - Carlsbad Dog Park - Carlsbad Village Drive at Appian Road. This park is covered with wood chips and includes water and doggie bags.
  3. Carlsbad - Hidden Canyon Park and Dog Park - 2685 Vancouver Street. Formerly known as Larwin Park. Carlsbad's first dog park.
  4. Leave only paw printsCardiff-by-the-Sea - Cardiff State Beach - A leash-only beach one mile south of Cardiff on Old Highway 101.
  5. Coronado - Coronado Beach - Ocean Boulevard near Sunset Park. It's the most northern end of the beach next to the Naval Air Station and is great for big dogs liking to play in the waves.Del Mar - Dog Beach - This is a seasonal off-leash beach from September to June, i.e., non-tourist season. Parking is difficult.
  6. El Cajon - Wells Park - 1153 E. Madison Avenue. Has dual drinking fountains for pets and owners. Off-leash area open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and is lighted for night use.La Jolla - La Jolla Shores Beach - Leashed dogs allowed on the beach and at the adjacent Kellogg Park from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
  7. Small dog at the beachLa Mesa - Harry Griffen Park - 9550 Milden Street. One acre for off-leash dogs.
  8. Poway - Poway Dog Park - 13094 Bowron Road. Almost two acres. Fenced, lighted, and off leash area. Park is open from sunrise to sunset, but lights in the dog park are on until 9:30 p.m
  9. San Diego - Fiesta Island in Mission Bay - The whole island is leash-free and the waters are calm so that dogs and dog owners can have a little wet and wild fun.
  10. San Diego - Dog Beach in Ocean Beach - I think this is the oldest dog beach in San Diego and very popular. It's a sandy area at the north end of Ocean Beach.
  11. Ball dog at the beachSan Diego - Mission Beach - Can be very crowded since Mission Beach is very popular.
  12. San Diego - Rancho Bernardo Park in Rancho Bernardo - 18448 W. Bernardo Drive. 2½ acres of room for dogs to roam leash free.

That's a pretty lengthy list. I had no idea there were more than five or six. I've been to 5, 9, 10, 13, and 14. You should visit each of them and take some pictures.

Hey, Jack - I'm wondering how the other dogs would get along with Monster Dog, though -- LOL. I've been over to the Balboa Park dog parks and they often have large dogs there, but I had never seen a Burnese Monster Mountain Dog until yours. I think the next cat I get will be one of those monster cats, the Maine Coon Cat. Zoey the Cool Cat weighs 13 pounds, and those Maine Coon Cats weigh up to 25 pounds, but I think I could handle one. Those and your Monster Dog look like they would be so much fun to play with.

Hey, Russel - Perhaps I could hire you to run around taking pictures for me -- LOL. Or we could go together and stimulate the economy by eating out somewhere close to each dog beach or park.

Hi Jim - That's a good selection of dog parks.  We have several around here, but so far, the only one I've blogged about is the Fair Oaks Dog Park.  It is so special that I devoted an entire post to it.

Jim,  Great post but what about cats.  I bet Zoey has some favorite places to go and it would be a great post.  My cat, Yazmine, would definitely be interested.

Hi Jim, I have two dogs.  Having said that, the trouble is that there are always a few owners who will not clean up after their pets which makes it more difficult for everyone else to enjoy the parks.

Hope you've had a merry Christmas!
