one mannequin criticizing the other

If you are selling you're home and decide to have a home stager give you a consultation keep an open mind.  Our fist reaction as homeowners is "this is where we live, don't say bad things about my home".  True, and we understand that.  But once you make that decision to sell your home, it becomes another product competing with all of the other products similar or in the same price range out there. When you go to the store, isn't there always a product that catches your eye?  That's what you want your house to do, catch that buyers eye, whether it be online or while driving by.

As a professional home stager I can tell you that home sellers that keep an open mind and have the attitude of wanting to sell their home expeditiously will always have the property that catches your eye.

When I walk through a home and point out areas of concern, don't take it personally.  You don't want a home buyer nitpicking your home apart.  That is why we go through your home with a fine tooth comb, so buyers won't have anything to pick apart.

In this market with so many homes for sale, a buyer will walk through a home and start a list of things that they want addressed or even worse they will start subtracting dollars off the list price.

If we suggest removing your favorite piece of furniture, or painting the walls a certain color there is a reason.  We don't judge you or you're decorating tastes.

You may have spent alot of money customizing your home to your design tastes, and it may be beautiful, but not everyone has the same tastes.  Look at any decorating magazine, television show or even friends homes.  You'll see everything from country to contemporary to college leftovers.

So when getting the adivce from a home stager keep on open mind, it's not a personal attack, or criticism.

We want your house to sell just as much as you do,  afterall that's why we do what we do!

Cindy: The longer we are in an environment, any environment, it seems the more lose our ability to view it critically or afresh. Great advice for homeowners on accepting observations that may help them to sell faster and for a higher market price.

It is tough for many people to realize that the things they like and want to see in a home are not always the things that are appreciated by others.  That is why staging tends to make the home appeal to a broader market.  Not everyone, just many more than most homes commonly do.

Matt-That is true, the longer we live somewhere, the more attached we are to it.

Robert-The buying pool, is so diverse, it's hard when homes are too customized.

Great advice for sellers working with a stager.  It's not personal - it's about showcasing the home and getting it sold.

As a REALTOR/Staging Specialist I really want to sell their home and will jump through hoops to get that accomplished.  Sometimes I need them to jump with me!

Come on - It will be fun & anyway , you are moving!

This is so important to understand that staging is not about YOU and your style but about appealing to the masses. I always explain this first to my consult clients Cindy and I believe it helps them understand the "why to stage" process without taking it personally.  Reminding them that they take their style with them is important but the key is to get this house sold first and allowing a new owner to see themselves & their style there. There is nothing personal about it!

Cindy -- You have hit on one of the most important parts of a stager's job...explaining every thing that the homeowners need to do in order to have a successful sale....without stepping on their toes or hurting their feelings.  It can also be the hardest part of our job.

Hey Cindy-Addressing the de-personalization issue in the first meeting with the client is truly important.  The homeowner is helped by the professional home stager with understanding WHY the changes will assist in a better presentation.  Words from an expert in staging (to the client) can make the difference, expecially for a Realtor stuck with an unattractive listing! : )

I agree totally.  How I approach a client is usually dependant on how long they've been in the home.  The longer they've been there the more personal the process is and has to be handled appropriately.

Cindy- one of my favorite clients told me before the consultation that he wanted me to be brutally honest with him.  What a treat to work with a Seller who "got it".
