Each year, new trendy colors are introduced to us and often influence our choices.  Sherwin Williams presents an exciting fanfare with their annual color trend release. I enjoy checking it out and want to share the trends with you!

Though I may tend toward Benjamin Moore as my usual selection for a premium brand of paint, I can certainly appreciate the array of new 2010 top color picks from Sherwin Williams.

                         Violet               Green               Yellow

                         Coral               Dark Grey               Active Cream

One important fact about color is that it has the power to influence our emotional well-being.  When we are looking for peace and calm in our lives, overly bright colors will often produce the opposite effect of 'serenity'.  Softer colors will provide a gentle quietness more so than an electric lime-green choice. Does that make sense to you?

This year’s trends appear to guide us toward the softer edges of color. These colors offer solace within the chaos of the nation's current challenges....affecting every one of us.  Take a look and observe the difference in how you feel when viewing these choices.  Remember, surrounding colors strongly influence our moods and can make an impression in varied unconscious and subtle manners.

Simplified, Refreshed, Treasured and Rooted are the themes of the SW 2010 color trends.

Our world has been rudely awakened to an unconscious 'throw-away mentality'. The awareness has been heightened and now focused on appreciating that which is old, worn and still usable.  Instead of replacing, use paint as an artful way to update items.  Choose colors which breathe new life onto a white wall or even a worn bookshelf...

Choose color as a way to celebrate a refreshed outlook within your life.  Paint your space with thoughtful and well-chosen colors. And make no excuses for enjoying tender color….because your need for balanced serenity is too important.

Simplification is the IN choice for 2010.

Very nice colors to work with, they should blend in well in Florida.

As a Realtor, I'm always thinking neutral with pops of color here and there.  Purple is the pop used in my house.

Thanks Inet Realty....These colors are showing up all across the US, not just Florida.  In metropolitan areas especially, the trend in design is toward a softer feel and it can be done well with heavier colors too.  It is all about taking off the 'hard edge' from big colors of the past I feel.  Check out the metro design magazines to view more examples....

Hello Liz...Purple is a great color to create nice energy if the neutral palatte needs a bit of zip!  The new tones and hues of purple are really nice...gentle without losing too much strength.  I love to see a well done-home with a bit of pop...especially thoughtful 'pops' that do not knock me over!  LOL....

Appreciated your post...these softer hues carry a French design ethic with them, and they do stand the test of time.

One nice things with these colors too for staging purposes is that we can incorporate the colors that are "in" with accessories like pillows, art and decor not necessarily paint the room purple or green for staging and still keep up with the current trend of the year. Thanks for posting Kathleen!

Hello Steve- Welcome to AR!  Yes, color has immense influence on our emotions.  These days I am favoring the more calm influences so was not surprised with the choices Sherwin Williams chose for 2010 trends. Thanks for stopping by!

Hello Li - Thanks for reading!  I agree with your take on the French influence.  The classics always survive and often trump the trends.  I like to see a more european flavor and appreciate the many other ethnic colors which add so much personality....and can create a warm and inviting space.

Hi Karen!  How are you doing?  You are so correct with the use of color trends and home staging.  We do not always need to change wall colors...yet, by simply adding colored pillows as you suggested, it creates a very updated look...inexpensively!  Personally, I think most people find it easier to change out a few accessories than get too crazy painting with the more vibrant colors.  However...it all depends on the goal!  These days....simplicity reigns.

Hi Ana....I too enjoy the trends and look forward to them each year.  Adding color to a home makes it fun and easy to 'freshen' up a space too!

Hi Kathleen  - how are you? I hope all is well in Florida. I love the new color Pallet. I am big Benjamin Moore fan so I primarily use their pallet and the line they do or Pottery Barn - but the fresh one above from w Williams will be yummy for a couple of kids rooms I am doing. Thanks for sharing. Kym

Hey Kym-Good to see you!  I chose some colors for a client's house this week and used a variation on one of the above colors.  Usually, I will take a color and ask for it 50% strength or 25% depending on how much natural light a room receives.  There are some great choices with this years SW line. Glad you stopped by!

My last 4 paint color consultations went 2010 Sherwin William completely. I attended the LA Stager Summer Meetup and Penny Balough from SW presented the new color trends and gave us paint cards. They really are beautiful. Your post is too!

Love them... not too loud, semi muted. I was hoping that purple would be back. I am so ready to accent with that color. We use SW too on every vacant for investors, as the colors are always true. Thank you my friend ;)

Hi Cathy Lee.....My painter loved the cards so much he KEPT THEM!!  EEks...now I need to have SW send me new ones.  LOL...  The colors look great in person and it really does provide a sort of 'calm' in a room....though I often divide the stronger colors in half (at least!).  The SW colors are getting better each year I think....so I am beginning to be divided between SW and Benjamin Moore. : ) Nice to see you!

Hey there LKP!!The purple....lol.  Yes...had a discussion about the color with a new client this past week.  This years purple is really more of a violet hue.  More red in the background than the usual blue hue so it is rather more uplifting than a heavier-weighted purple.  This is important to distinguish I think as purple can certainly tow the line towards being a 'downer' color if the lighting is not quite right in the space.  LOVE the new violet as an accent! Looking to see more of this tone in retail now!! Thanks for stopping by! : )

PS-Congrats on presenting at RESA National Convention--should be an awesome meeting!

Good detailed article you've written.  My husband is a painter, but he mostly does not have to choose the colors.... and 95% of his work is for painting the rental houses or apartments.... nothing exciting!  Appreciate your comment to my post!

Hi Diane...yes, most painters do not have to choose the colors.  Though, they have their definite opinions when asked to paint questionable colors!!  It is also fun to hear the painter's comments when they arrive at a property and see what I need them to paint over!!  : )  Thanks for stopping by!
