New York Feng Shui and The Evil Eye by Feng Shui Consultant Carole Provenzale, NY Feng Shui ConsultantIn working with Feng Shui in New York for so many years, I have had clients ask me about my knowledge and understanding of what is known as "The Evil Eye."  Some of my Feng Shui clients actually feel that they have been cursed as they have had so much bad luck or difficulties in their lives.

In Feng Shui School, the Evil Eye was discussed only briefly.  As Feng Shui Consultants we were taught that the use of Peacock Feathers helps to dispel any negative energy from the Evil Eye.  The beautiful and powerful Blessings and Space Clearings cleanse a space, whether it is a home or a business, of ANY negative energy.

Transcendental Blessings and Space Clearings are not just used to eradicate "Predecessor Energy.  They are also used if someone believes they have had the Evil Eye placed on them.

In my readings, I did find that almost every Country believes in The Evil Eye.  They also have different ways of dealing with this energy which is said to come either intentionally or by accident.  It is said the Evil Eye can come to you by someone who is jealous of what you have or what they perceive you have.  Some say it is done inadvertently by someone staring at you too long.

One of my clients from the Middle East made his fame by specifically creating artwork using Peacock Feathers to deflect the Evil Eye.  New York Feng Shui Art: What's 650 HOURS of YOUR Time Worth? by Feng Shui Long Island & Manhattan

In almost EVERY language I could find, there are special prayers for anyone suffering from the "spell" of the Evil Eye.

In Italian the prayer is called   Mal Occhio. Many years ago I had asked my Grandmother (who knew many old prayers and blessings) what she thought of this hideous "curse" that could be placed on you.  She told me something that I live by:

If you don't BELIEVE something can hurt you, then it can't.  Those who believe in The Evil Eye, she said, live in fear.  And if they feel they have it, there isn't much they can do to rid themselves of it.  She refused to believe in it and never spent a fearful day.

I'm curious what you believe about The Evil Eye.  When I work with Feng Shui Clients who believe in it, I do address it through the Space Clearings we do and I always honor and respect their beliefs.

Do YOU believe in The Evil Eye?

Hi Carole-I too had never heard of the evil eye. Interesting indeed. I keep learning from you. Hope you had a great Labor Day. :-)

Carole, I've heard of the Evil Eye, but thought it was some sort of voodoo thing.  Didn't know about the peacock feather "cure' though. I like your grandmother's theory better.

I finally wrote out my "dead body" real estate story, but it's too long for one blog. Maybe I'll post it as a two parter!

Hope you had a great weekend.

I have been gifted with an assortment of peacock feathers by a "crone" who also said I should add a smudge stick to my bundle...=)

Carole- Many a time I have heard or have said 'they are giving you the evil eye' but I never put it with the context in your post. More of a this person is mad type thought. LOL. But now I will pay more attention when I hear or feel someone say to me 'they are giving you the evil eye.

Carole - I remember having grown up in an Italian family mention of the curse of the Evil Eye and my grandmother telling me something similar to what your grandmother told you.  I never knew about the relation of it to peacock feathers.  Very interesting for sure.

Hi Carol, I've not heard of this, but I'm sure it has many names. I think your grandmother's advice was very wise...don't give power to those things that have none...just like the darkness is nothing in & of itself...it is an absence of light...and where does it all go when you turn on the light?? Keep your light shining! :-)  (beautiful pics!)

I don't believe in The Evil Eye, but I do find peacock feathers to be very soothing and relaxing.

Carole - I don't believe in the Evil Eye.  I know lots of folks that are so superstitious they believe in anything and everything.

To me ... peacocks and their plumage are just stunning creatures.  The feathers don't make me uncomfortable in the least.  :)

Carole, I grew up listening to my grandmother and other elderly people talk about so and so, and that they had been given the evil eye, and that they should go do a cleansing or something like that, to try to get rid of the bad energy, etc.  I guess when you grow up with it, and sometimes your life is nothing but one big mess after the other, you sometimes wonder ...

I have practiced like mad, having 'good thoughts' ... although sometimes it's hard. :)

Maybe I'll get some peacock feathers and see if they help keep a positive outlook...

I am shocked at the number of comments from those that have never heard of the Evil Eye.  Really?  Now, I didn't know about the peacock feathers to ward off the negative energy.  Interesting!

Carole:Peacock feathers are beautiful and certainly couldn't hurt.  I am wondering if this really is more about karma. There are three ways to eradicate bad actions or thoughts that may produce negative consequences. First, and most often, is simply making amends. Second, is to take whatever bad happens, like spraining an ankle in a sports competition and then writing an article about how to overcome that kind of disappoint. Third, is to meditate and shift the energy at the level of pure potentiality. Perhaps suggestion an intention at the beginning.

Carole, Interesting post. I always learn so much from reading your blog. My daughters and I were out shopping this weekend. We walked into a store and my younger daughter said, "Mom, look over there, that's the girl in my weight lifting class that stares at me all the time. She's always giving me the evil eye."  So naturally that turned into a lengthy discussion about not worrying about what other people are saying or thinking about you.  But, I had never heard about the peacock feather eradicating negative energy.

Hi Carole

I have mixed feelings about the 'evil eye'. At one point I would have said that humans do not have this power over others, however I've seen the power that negative and spiteful people have on those people that they turn against and the results are often tragic. I believe it is more of a practical thing in that when you are around someone who dislikes you, they can make your life hell. Some of these negative people will even go so far as to use other people as proxy to get at those they dislike or have something against.

As for it being paranormal, I tend to agree with your Grandmother....we're often our own worst enemies and if we believe that we are cursed, then we may sub-consciously cause things in our own life to go awry and then blame it on the negative energy someone is directing at us. REally, we should not allow others to ever have such power over us.

I'd never heard about Peacock Feathers averting bad energy before....although I believe that anything could ward off bad energy if you believe it is. We create our own worlds on many levels.

Sheldon, I like them myself.  Peacock feathers have their own "eye" and we often use them in smudging a home or business.

Pat, It is such an old concept and believed all over the world.  I had to look it up to find out more about it myself.

Linda, I'll have to go look for your post, is it up?  It sure sounds interesting....

Fascinating stuff Carole.  I had heard about the Evil Eye, but didn't really know that much about it.  Your posts are always so interesting.

JaneAnne, It couldn't hurt, it's often what we use in Feng Shui to cleanse a home. Peacock Feathers and Sage.  It sounds like I'd like your friend.

Martha, It's funny but I've never paid much attention to it although they did cover it briefly in Feng Shui Classes.  But it's been around for centuries and many people from all walks of life believe in it.

Donna, The Peacock Feathers are a Feng Shui "cure."  My grandmother knew all the old Italian Blessings and used to do one with an egg in water right before Easter.  It was facinating, the egg (whites only) would turn into a shape of something overnight and foretell your future for the year.  She wasn't able to translate the Italian prayer into English or I would have learned it.

Mara, I know if my Grandmother believed in it, she would have had a prayer for it.  But I've been coming across it more often then not lately, it's a belief that is passed down and many people still believe in it today.

Jim, I think if you don't believe things can hurt you, perhaps they can't.

Carol, I don't happen to believe in it myself but always honor other's beliefs.  I'm finding more and more people have this particular belief.

Sylvie, By all means get them.  I do believe this belief is handed down depending on what your ancestors believed and you would believe if you grew up hearing about it.  I liked my Grandmother's thoughts on it and was able to put it out of my thoughts until recently when it came up several times.

Leesa, I was surprised myself that no one knows about it.  It's such a widely known belief.  Maybe it's better that they never heard of it.

Janice, I love your ideas and we always work with Intent.  The issue with the Evil Eye is that it is believed it could be anyone that gives it to you, even unintentionally by being envious of what you have.   Many years ago we were taught in Parapsychology to put ourselves in a protective "bubble" to keep negative energy away from us.  I always wondered if it kept the good energy away as well.  Your ideas about writing it down and filling it with Intention are powerful.

Sandy, The Peacock Feather is used in Feng Shui and is a very popular cure for the Evil Eye in the Middle East where almost everyone believes in this type of negative energy.  I do believe if we don't allow others to hurt us, they can't have the power over us. Our minds are SO powerful, I am always amazed at what people overcome.

Jo, Not that many years ago I did not believe in truly evil people.  I'm sorry to say my thoughts have changed on that a great deal.  There are and some seem to relish in the fact that they can make someone become miserable and unhappy.  They seem to spread it around and direct it at certain people and I do believe it's because it makes them feel more powerful.

Hannah, This is an interesting story about your bear.  I would want to know more....who gave it to you and how you made the association with the bear and bad luck.

The evil eye does not sound to fun. I remember as a kid when I was acting up my mother would give me the "evil eye". I knew at that point I was in trouble big time - LOL

I have heard of the "evil eye", and I have heard of the peacock feather being NEGATIVELY connected to the evil eye. I had a friend who had lived in India tell me that she did not like to enter houses with peacock feathers....well, you know how I feel about peacock feathers if you look at my avatar photo! I read about them also, since I REALLY wanted to use them in my branding, and found a mixed bag of beliefs, that were mostly old, forgotten and did not seem to hold enough sway over modern thinking to deter me from using them. I love them!  My grandson and I play a silly game where we give each other the "stink eye" which is a version of the "what you talkin' bout Willis?" eye that Gary Coleman used to do!  >:o/

Bill, I would have been REALLY good if I'd lived in your house :)

Cheryl, I did read that on one of the sites, that the peacock feather was not good for the Evil Eye "cure."  It's what we use in Feng Shui for the Blessings and other sites say it is a cure as well.  I know that my client from the Middle East made them for all his friends for that very reason, to deflect negative energy from the Evil Eye.  I guess it depends where you grew up....and I thought perhaps you used it as a protection!
