There's No Room in a Real Estate Transaction for an Egomaniac

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Charlemagne International Properties BRE# 01147470

I've always enjoyed quality over quantity.  Give me one great book (or pair of shoes) instead of ten mediorce ones.  The same goes for service, and that includes real estate service.  I received both as a buyer and seller in my pre-agent days, but I hope I have only given the quality kind.

Don't get me wrong; things do go wrong, mistakes are made and there are many cracks the myriad of details can slip through.  A real estate transactions takes careful monitoring, constant file checks and a massive amount of communication to keep tabs on all the moving parts and participants--not to mention working with the personalities involved.

I've always felt it was a win/win when the seller feels he sold a little too low and the buyer feels he paid a little too much; when each agent feels they did more than their fair share of the work, and when no one reminds anyone how great they are and why.

Few consumers really cares how many homes you sold last year or in the last decade.  They care about this sale, their sale.  What you did in the past is history.  It is about this customer, the quality of service provided and handling each transaction with integrity and professionalism.

Alexsandra - You're right--it is about the client and their needs.  If that is kept as the highest priority things usually turn out well.

Jamie - So true.  I know my clients are happy with the service they received when I receive their referrals--and that's good for my business and bank account.

Nice post and thanks for the share.  It's about the win/win, ego will get in the way most of the time.   Agreed!

Then why does the buyers and sellers ask that question?  There are points on either side of the coin.

Hi Norma,  Well said and very true.  I remember having a conversation with my Dad when I was young, complaing that I had to do everything (poor me!)... and my brothers and sisters didn't do their fair share.  He pointed out that my job was to give 100%. It was all I could do and that if everyone gave their 100% we would naturally each do our part.  He said that was the secret to his marriage to my mom, that they both gave 100% and so always met in the middle.  He was a smart guy!   Deb

Lyn - It's perfectly fine and expected to answer the question---and I certainly do, but what happened in 2006 needs to stay in 2006 in my opinion.

Roxy -   Good point.  I have nothing against plaques on the wall--I have a few myself, but I think the regard for our profession would be higher if we focus more on the client and less on the agent.

Deb -   Dad was a smart man!  It never works well to wait for someone else to do what needs to be done.  One of my favorite quotes is:  "The greatest failure is not to act when action is required."

Got to love when others feel they are the gift God intended to all of real-estate-dom...ummm, NO!  We all need to learn to get along, but with so many personalites, there's going to be conflict.  Some people just can't admit to making mistakes or not working in the best interests of their clients.

Thing is, our industry is full of high-D individuals (DISC profile). Most of us are Drivers (high acheivers and controllers) to some extent, that's why we pick this business. When someone has to wave their flag about it all the time, it might hide a bit of insecurity.

Love the pic! It's kind of like "what have you done for me lately?"  but in a good win-win way.

Excellent points.   The Seller only cares about what you can do for them, not what you've done before.... Everyday you have to go out there and prove yourself.   Good Post.
