I don't know if you, the reader, watched President Obama addressing the high-schoolers this morning, but he did a masterful job.  The kids were just great.  They were very focused on him, and seemed to be taking his words of encouragement very seriously.  That he would take time out of his day to show them he cared about these kids' future... I am sure it meant a lot to the kids.

How anyone... and I do mean ANYONE... could take this as some sort of a negative... just blows my mind.  I think all those who were ranting and raving for what seemed like weeks before this speech... have ended up looking pretty darn foolish.  If anything... Obama's speech was very much a traditional "family values" speech that even any Republican would have been... or should have been proud to give.

I am very proud of President Obama for putting up with all the nonsense he faced in the days and weeks leading up to this... and for making his presentation in spite of the overly-vocal complaints of a few.

I didn't watch it but I know it would have been great.  Those people who were complaining were following some leader who does not deserve to lead.  Obama is a great leader.

I agree with you 100%.  I read the text of the speech yesterday because there has been so much up roar.  As a former teacher I thought it was words of inspiration our children should hear from the leader of our country.

Right on Karen......all the PRE-negativity was just poop. Heaven forbid kids should hear a positive message from their president!

Barbara:  I think it was great, too.  And... your point is very well made.  The complainers WERE following someone who does not deserve to lead.  I was very proud of President Obama this morning.  And the kids... well, you could see it in their faces.

Kathy:  All the uproar made all the screamers just look foolish.  Talk about ending up with egg on their faces... yikes.  Now, I am so glad they made so much noise about it.  They all look so silly... to everyone but themselves... and it serves them right.

And by the way... I, too, am a former teacher... nine years in junior high.  But... really... IS there such a thing as a "former" teacher ?  Prolly not.

Hi Karen Anne... what we have been witness to since this speech was announced was the sort of partisan nonsense that gets in the way of any government being effective.  Sadly, we all suffer for it, and in the end, Obama gave his speech and those who did not get to watch it are worse off because of it.

Thank you for allowing the man to be our President.  I just can not believe how divided this nation has become and how much hatred is displayed.  It was a once in a life time event for the children; as a child I wish I could have heard from a President.  Lots of anti-Obama folks said that President Obama's speech was a political ploy, so my questions is when were grade schoolers allow to vote , or to represent special interest groups?  He offered hope and challenged the children to be the best - I can not see how that was a bad thing.

Bobbi:  Poop is a great word.  I like it.  Anyone who watched Obama's presentation could see how much the kids appreciated him.  What a positive message... just so encouraging... from a President who shows how much he thinks of the value of education... and how getting the most of their time in school can take these kids just about as far as they want to go.  It was, in a way, a "follow your dreams" kind of speech.  How anyone could object to that is beyond me.  But, I am a former teacher... nine years teaching junior high... and I absolutely KNOW how kids that age feel when they sense that someone is both listening to them, and cares enough about their concerns to spend time... just with them !

Steve:  I am so glad I MADE time in my day to watch the entire speech... and watch it live as it was taking place.  I would bet that those who are the most vocal in condemning the speech... didn't watch it.  And... the continuingly silly thing is... that those who are screaming over this... and continue to do so... think they are "scoring points" with the electorate they hope to impress... come November 2010.

In our town only about 1% of the Public School Kids opted out and went to the library at their parents request.  I wonder if they felt embarrassed to be singled out.

If I remember correctly, about 40 or so years ago, if someone told me no I couldn't do something, that's the thing I wanted to check out the most!  So maybe this is a good thing, if you understand how the minds of kids work.  I bet the kids that weren't allowed to see the speech have or will search it out ASAP.  Then I think they'll wonder what the heck people thought was so wrong!

Cynthia:  You have said it very well.  Obama offered hope, and challenged the children to be the best.  I, too, cannot see how anyone could conclude this was a bad thing.  He showed the kids he cares... and I just know... from watching their faces... that the knew that.

Yes, the nation IS divided... but I don't think it is as divided over this as the shrill screamers try and portray it as being.  I think the louder they scream, the fewer supporters they have.  Yes... their supporters are in many ways as loud as they are... and that fact can lead some to think that they are more numerous than they really are.

But... I think their own silliness may lead to them looking very foolish to all those who now have either seen or heard about the actual speech President Obama made this morning.  I have talked to many folks today who were just amazed... saying..."Sheesh... what was all the screaming about ?  The speech was fine."  Thanks for commenting... and please come back more often...

Wanda:  I would guess that when those poor 1% came back to their classrooms... and then listened to the comments of their school-mates... they ended up feeling pretty silly.  Actually... I think it was their own parents who ended up looking foolish to the kids.  Many adults have no clue what real "thinkers" many of these kids are.  They are a lot more "aware" than most folks... even their parents... give them credit for.

Wanda... you read my mind.  The kids surely are going to wonder... after they google the speech, and watch it on You Tube.  You used the words... what the heck ?  I am not sure the kids will be using those same exact words... when they come to that conclusion.  By the way... great quilts !

To All:  I just have to share this.  MSN has taken a poll on Obama's presentation, and the controversy surrounding it.  The question was:  What was your take on the controversy?  Was it overblown, was it warranted... or Not Sure.  The results were...

88.4%   said the entire controversy was overblown

10.7%   said the contoversy was warranted

.7%      said they were not sure.

There were many comments after the survey... but my favorite of them all was...

"At this point, Obama could blow his nose wrong and someone would call it a socialist plot."

I wasn't able to see or listen to the speech, but I did read it, Karen.  I don't understand what the hubub was all about.  However, from what I have since learned, people were upset about the first rendition of this speech.  I didn't read that one, so I can't speak on it.  The one I read today, though, showed absolutely no political agenda in my mind.  It simply spoke to children to tell them that they need to take responsibility fo their part in their education instead of making excuses.  Since when did telling kids to stay in school, do your homework and be respectful to your teachers become a bad thing?  And, I'm sorry that the other person who wrote about this same thing (with an opposite opinion) decided to be so nasty in his comments.  I thought it was rude, personally.  You were respectful in your comments.

By the way, I have never seen a President receive this much hatred either.  At this point, the Obamas are damed if they do and damned if they don't.   To criticize Michelle Obama for wearing shorts to the Grand Canyon and then be upset about President Obama's "mom jeans".  Is that really what the country has come to?  I'm so disappointed.  My in-laws have gone so far as to tell me that they blame President Obama because their credit card companies have decreased their limits and increased their interest rates even though they have credit scores above 800.  I guess that IS what this country has come to.

Karen Anne:  I have somehow avoided the national news lately, but caught some ranting and raving about the President's school address on CNN the other night.  I must say, the cloud of question marks above my head is still there.  He's the President!  No matter what his party, he's the head honcho.  And you're right, the fact that he took time out of his day to speak to students is awesome.  It's simply sad that some very small minded towns in our Country wouldn't allow their kids to see it.

I think all the hubbub made a huge impact on just how important The President addressing the children of the USA.  It's a good thing to be inspired, it's a good thing to take responsibility for your actions, and it's a good thing to be brave enough to stand up for all people, even those who don't like you very much!

Hi Karen Anne:

I didn't get a chance to see it...but I thought it was a wonderful idea.

Maybe I can catch it online on youtube...

Karen Anne, you are so right, it is amazing to see how many just react without any thought or reason.  Though I am happy to say not all got on the bandwagon.  Heck, I saw Newt Gingrich complementing Obama's speech - of course he also made snide comments about his expectations for the health care speech, but still it was nice...  I do think all the talk got more people interested which is nice, hopoefully it increased the audience.

It seems that the Republicans can't find anything negative to say about Obama so they just make up stuff. And there are a lot of people who believe crap that is nonsensical.

Heather:  Yes... I thought things were bad when all the hate-mongers were out in full force against Clinton... but what Obama is facing, and continues to face, is quite vicious.  And... to criticize Michelle Obama for wearing shorts when the family went to the Grand Canyon.  I mean, just how petty can you get ?

Chris Ann:  Avoiding the news is not a bad thing.  A steady diet of cable news can really tear up the tummy... depending on how vicious it is on a given night.  I think you have hit the nail on the head.  Small-minded towns... filled with small-minded people.  They are scared, and seem to believe just about anything that Glenn Beck and the rest of them throw at them.  They just seem to open wide and swallow hard.  How sad.

Wanda:  To use your word... I think all the hubbub that was raised in advance of President Obama speaking to the kids... just ended up making all those who cried "the sky was falling"... when the speech proved to be such an encouraging time for the students.  Did any of them show any disrespect for President Obama.  No !  These kids should be an excellent example to all those who... time after time... went crazy at those Town Hall meetings.  So very sad that respect has sunk so low.

Toula:  I heartily recommend that you watch it on You Tube.  The speech was so "student and kid centered."  So encouraging for all of these students... with all of their varied backgrounds.  And there he was... the President of the United States.  He came to their school... and was speaking to THEM.  They may not remember much about what he had to say... but they will remember that he cared enough to spend the time with them.  That memory will last forever.

Joanne:  I am SURE that all the talk ended up greatly increasing the audience who watched Obama's presentation.  Actually, the screamers ran the people's negative expectations so high... that when Obama finally delivered his speech... it really made those who "protested" look all that more foolish.

Elizabeth:  So... you've noticed that, too.  Sure... they just make stuff up.  And then... each of their "tribe" repeats it and repeats it... until they themselves actually believe it is true.  How incredibly juvenile.

It just amazes me how naive so many people on the right can be.  All these goofy stories that the cable folks come out with... and their fans just open wide and swallow hard.  Simply amazing.

It is amazing how some people put down our President for anything he says.  If you don't like someone's policies, that's fine, but give the guy a chance.

Brian:  Obama was on Letterman last Monday, and he was just great.  Letterman peppered him with questions... tough questions... and Obama just dove right into the answers... even to the hard questions.  No avoiding anything.  Jeez... it is so nice being able to watch Obama at the UN... and NOT be embarrassed by him.  Bush, on the other hand... was Bush.  What a global embarrassment.  The Dixie Chicks were Right !
