Ways to Improve your Industry Presence in 2010

There are 114 days left in the year for you to get your marketing back on track.  What can you do in the remaining 114 days to build up your online professional brand.  If you do nothing different, then you will get the same results as you've gotten in the past but if you do something the results will improve exponentially with the amount of effort you put into it.

Start this by doing an quick online survey of yourself.  Then take a few steps to improve your online brand once a month and you will enjoy a new level of brand recognition in 2010.

1.  Take the time to create a new digital picture of yourself.  A picture is worth a 1000 words, so the photo that everyone sees online should be professional and representative of you.

2.  Google yourself once a month and be sure your online presence is where you expect it to be.

3.  Be sure your online profiles represent you as a professional.  Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, ActiveRain, Ziggs and other websites should be consistant and be what you want your future clients to see.

4.  If you respond to questions on Zillow and Trulia be sure you are remarkable.  Proof read your answers and be sure they are grammatically correct and that your spelling is accurate and what you say is what you meant to say.  Potential customers and clients are going to just you as a professional by the way you present yourself and your knowledge online.

5.  Keep up on current events.  Don't be that agent that doesn't keep up on things or don't be the agent in this caption:

While looking at a house, my brother asked the estate agent which direction was north because he didn't want the sun waking him up every morning.

She asked, 'Does the sun rise in the north?'

My brother explained that the sun rises in the east and has for some time. She shook her head and said, 'Oh, I don't keep up with all that stuff......'

Our buyers today are better prepared and better educated than ever before and they expect the same from their realtor.

6.  Get involved.  Do something in your community, get involved in a not for profit or non profit organization, get involved in your kids schools.  Be visible.  The more people see you and associate you with real estate the more likely they are to do business with you.

These are just a few ideas for you to improve your business and get things moving.  Just remember if you do nothing, nothing will change but if you do just one thing then you will notice a change in your business and people will notice.

Harry, that is an excellent idea.  The more an agent posts the more visible they become.  There are so many opportunities to publish articles online and elsewhere, like small neighborhood magazines and tabloids who are happy to take submissions.

It's funny that you mentioned Trulia.  I recently answered a question from a first time investor about my market area and available properties therein.  I didn't think much of it but to my surprise I got a phone call.

Based on that call I began working to find properties for this investor.  Just for sharing what I knew -- go figure.

Other than the agent who clearly clearly could pass for the Scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz, your points are all well taken. Thanks for the encouragement, it is very much appreciated.

June,

I can see the importance of a good picture especially since it is worth a thousand words. Can you image what a good video is worth?

June, These are all excellent reminders. Our market here in Milwaukee is screaming right now, but in 60 days I'm afraid it will flat-line. I am going to use your suggestions as a house-cleaning check-list starting later TODAY, to make sure my Fall and Winter stays screaming! Thank You!

Hi June - Good tip on profiles. We should check all of these every few months to be sure that they're accurate and applicable to the current market.
