First let me say I did not vote for President Obama; however I do respect the office of the presidency

Last evening as I watched President Obama's congress address I was appalled.  At times I though he was speaking in some third world country.  I have never heard a member of congress shout out "You lie" while a president was making a speech.  Based on the look Pelosi face she was as surprised as I was.

I frankly think that Obama is an idiot.  He's bankrupted Chicago and raised the retail taxes to the highest in the United States.  Conventions are moved from Chicago b/c of the taxes and Illinois is very close to bankruptcy.  He's the worst thing for the United States.  The senator who yelled out,... there was an immediate vein of envy, followed by a reality that this cannot happen.  Even though he needs to be removed from office, the senator who did the shout out should be censored or "suspended" for a bit.  I do think that the United States is at a moment of a great divide and I wouldn't be surprised to see a revolution of right against left or left against right.  I understand his frustration, but that senator's supposed to be a leader.

Like you I respect the office of president. I was surprised to hear of the incident. An apology quickly arrived. I do agree with the congressman from SC though, obama has told some stories beginning with Rev Wright.

Richard: I have mixed feelings about that … I saw the speech as well. While I disagree with the tactic … clearly an emotional outburst … President or not … we all must be held accountable. Some of what we are being sold by the Pres is outrageous! And no, that does not justify anyone calling the pres a liar.

To be a civilized Nation we need to stay within the rules of Order.  Calling out such a name while the President is speaking is ridiculous.  Agree or disagree with the man, but respect the office he represents.

Hi Richard - same here, I DID vote for our President...but you know what I was disgusted how one can represent our country and make an outward statement that to me was a personal attack.  In my opinion he should be disciplined harshly but I doubt it.

Could it be that in other countries, like Canada, the most respected and revered Public figure is the individual who brought health care reform to their citizens? Lord help us if the under lying reason the hecklers do not want to see the President's Health care plan go forward.  A Democratic President who also happens to be a black man!

I agree. I guess freedom of speach and acting with class are not the same thing.  I definitely do not want Joe Wilson addressing the country's school kids!!!

Richard,

I have great respect for the office, but no respect for the man.  That being said, I think he is a liar and I think he is an egomaniac the way he talks down to us and thinks he can solve everything with a speech.  He can not pay for what he is proposing and he is running our great country into the dirt with all this spending.  I have no respect for the man at all.  But as far as calling him a liar in the way that it was done, shows no respect for the office, therefor I feel that was wrong to do and in poor judgment.

There is a time and a place for everything and I believe the Office, not the man deserves better.

Wow, Richard.  I did not watch the speech last night, but just read your post.  I immediately went to Google it to see if I could find a video clip to watch it for myself.  When I Googled it......your post came up #2 on the Google results page!!!!!  Ahead of every major news organization!!!  Talk about the power of AR!!!!

Call it like it is Joe!!! I don't think it was respectful but neither is Obama!  He (B.O.)  is a control freak, abusive and not qualified to be president.

It is about time someone stood up to the beast because he (Joe Wilson) speaks for the majority of Americans regardless of party.

Richard - I was surprised to hear the public outburst and saddened that we've come to the point where we cannot respect the office of President.  I was just as saddened when Ted Kennedy publicly called President Bush a liar. Public disagreement is a different thing.  When expressed in a respectful manner it holds much more power. But it seems that the majority of our politicians have no class.

Rep Wilson did reportedly try to apologize to the President for the unfortunate outburst.  I do not support Obama-care either, but this was not the time and place for such a show of dissent.

I missed it, except the last 5 minutes. Last night i was at the office until almost 9 pm so I had forgotten it was on until someone mentioned it to me. Hadnt heard that someone shouted out though.

President Bush was called a liar by a senator and he was also booed during a speech by every democrat in the room.  People have awfully short memories when they receive the same treatment.  The answer to this is for Obama to publicly read the bill and then tell us what it means to him.  I don't think he would be able to wiggle out of it then.  But, that will never happen.  It is too easy to talk down to people and tell them what they should think.

What I'd like to happen is for an elected official like Barney Frank to apologize to a constituent whom he compared to a dining table.  There was no outrage about that incident that I can recall.

Repeatedly President Bush was called all sorts of names, including Hitler but that was ok, since he's a Republican.  Now some people suddenly got religion and expect Obama and the office to be revered.  Heeelarious.

Hi Richard... there is a time and a place and a venue for everything.  During a Presidential address to Congress was neither the time, place or venue for such a disrespectful outburst.  We may all have the right to freedom of speech, but as has been discussed, that freedom is not absolute (try talking about bombs in line while waiting to be screened by the TSA at an airport and you will find out that exercising your freedom inappropriately does have consequences).  An elected member of Congress should show better judgement.

I don't think our president is an idiot.  He's pretty brilliant if you ask me.  How many of you went to Harvard Law School?  Anyway, there is no room for disrespect anytime.  Speak to the issues if you want, but to resort to name calling only proves that the person calling the names has no valid argument on the issue.  It doesn't matter who you voted for.  It doesn't matter if it is a Republican or a Democrat.  It doesn't matter what race, religion, etc... In my book, it's uncalled for and a waste of time to behave in this manner.

Based on the look on Nancy Pelosi's face, I was surprised to see that Joe Wilson survived that glare! He didn't deserve to.

Cheers,

Robin
