I was thinking about this gorgeous piece of music today and wanted to listen to it so I found it on YouTube.

It hadn't occurred to me until I saw the images that today is September 10th and tomorrow will mark eight years since the tragedy took place.

This recording of the BBC Orchestra, conducted by Leonard Slatkin was made on September 15th, 2001 to honor those who lost their lives on that terrible day in our nation's history, September 11, 2001.

Ann,

Yes, I still get emotional when I think of all the lives lost and broken and for what??  September 11 should not be forgotten.

Hey, Ann - I wasn't aware of this specific recording. How appropriate that the BBC Orchestra chose Samuel Barber, an American. I suspect that was not by accident. Next year is Barber's 100th birthday. He was born just two days before me, although many years before me, too. Jim and I will be involved in a series of Samuel Barber concerts next year in his memory.

That is such a powerful piece of music that has been used in countless movies as well..these are the pieces I remind people of when they dismiss the importance of music in their lives.

This music is incredibly powerful. Samuel Barber is from West Chester, PA just up the road, so we are familiar with this work. thankyou for reminding us.

I'm working on some Barber piano pieces right now for some performances I'll be doing next year with the chamber music group I'm with.

Hi Ann,

Very powerful indeed! As a violinist myself (ex Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London, 23 years) I had the privilege of performing that piece of music many times and with Leonard Slatkin too.

The Barber Adagio is one of the most moving and emotional works ever written in my opinion. As as such, can also be one of the most difficult to perform.  Also worthy of note is the slow movement from Mahler's 5th symphony and, in more recent times, the theme from Schindler's list as performed by a good friend of mine, Itzak Perlman.

Thank you Ann,

Steve
