Wal-Mart has real estate classifieds?

By
Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Holman Premier Realty

My telephone rang a few days ago, inquiring about a house I have listed for rent.  Since I do not work in the rental market, I found this odd.  Over the weekend, a few more calls about this came in.  Finally, I thought to ask the caller where they are seeing this.  She responded, "The Wal-Mart classifieds."

Nosy by nature, I went to check it out.

Sure enough there it was.   http://walmart.oodle.com/housing/sale/

A local search can be done for rentals, real estate for sale, in my neck of the woods, 33 pages worth.  Yowsa.

Obviously, oodle, a venue I had not heard of until very recently, picked up my listing from somewhere and placed it in the rental field for some reason.  A couple clicks of a mouse had the listing reported as miscategorized and since the calls have stopped, I assume it has been removed.

But Wal-Mart has an impressive classified section, one more way they are drawing eyeballs to their page.  I assume this must be in development mode, as they have not done much to promote it except tucking a small text box on a page I stumbled upon.  But obviously people are finding it.  This leaves me wondering what moves Wal-Mart is going to make to monetize this opportunity.

Wow Darlene, I didn't know about this either. I checked it out and there are a lot of homes there.

I'm pretty sure that if you have a Point2 site it automatically syndicates your listings to Oodle.

If you put it out for syndication, then everybody will get it directly, or the scraper sites will get it second hand. I have buyers that will call me and argue about a listing that they have seen on line, and do not want to believe me when I tell them the property has long been sold.

I love my job!

Ron, I was surprised.  When I showed the site to my PB, his initial comment was "amazing."

Vickie & Ed, I am sure that is how that works, but I just found it a bit surprising that Wal-Mart has classifieds, and is syndicating.

Sandy, you are welcome.

I stumbled across the real estate listings on wal-mart.com a while ago and was also surprised.

That is a good question. They are definitely big enough to attract a portion of the market. I had never seen the ads either and intend to do a little research.
