My owner is a home inspector in San Diego.

Since my last two posts were about trains, I thought I would keep with the transportation theme for this post.

One of the neat things about exploring one's own community is that one never knows what one might find in those little nooks and crannies. My recent drive from Imperial Beach to downtown San Diego along the railroad tracks, beachside parks, and military piers brought me to the following ship. I have no idea what it's used for, but it reminded me of something out of "Star Trek for Boats." Anyone know anything about it?

Wow, Russel. That is like the ship of all ships. I would love to take a ride on that thing. Thanks for sharing, Jim

Russel, first, may I ask. is that Zoey the Cool Cat's room? LOL, look at her, what a sweetie.

OK, I want to go for a ride, sign me up. Can we do an AR trip on this thing? I hope someone tells us what the heck it is!

Hey, Jim - I like that, "the ship of all ships." LOL All I could think about as I looked at it was trying to get as close as I could to see more of it. Alas, the only way to get close to it was with my 300 mm telephoto lens. What I thought was interesting is that I couldn't see any call letter designations, ship name, or anything like that. I wanted to ask someone when it was next scheduled to go for a cruis because I wanted to see it ride the waves.

Hey, Andrea - That's Zoey the Cool Cat in our home office on the day that I got my Canon Rebel XSi camera. She knew exactly when the UPS delivery guy came to the door and I came in with a huge box that there would be something for her to play in, or with. If we're lucky, we might be able to charter this thing for a cruise around the bay for the NAR Convention here this November. Of course, that means that I have some work to do to find out what it is, who runs it, whether or not I can reserve it... LOL

My guess is that it's a "really cool ship", Russel.  :)    Please let us know what kind of ship it is.  I've never seen such a thing before.

Russel,

This is the HSV Sea Slice built by Lockheed Martin.  It has four tear dropped shaped submerged hulls based on the SWATH hull design or has the navy as labeled it SLICE.

OK - Can this thing (ship) also go on land? Somebody must have stayed up several nights to come up a design like that.

That is amazing -- I didn't know there was something like that off the Star Trek set, either! If you can get it for NAR, Russel, you'll have to have someone take pictures of everyone on it! :)

I knew there was a reason why we kept Larry Story around -- LOL.

So she's home ported here in San Diego. I'd love to see her out and about on the waters.

Cool - looks very stealthy (is that even a word). Now I have to go read more about it ~Rita

Russel, I don't know that much about ships nor boats for that matter, so my only guess is that it is an expensive boat!

Right after construction this was at the Norfolk Naval Station (this is where I first worked after retiring from the Navy) to conduct its final sea tests. The Navy wants to use it mostly for Special Forces operations and with the Seals base over on Coronado I'm sure they are using it for training.
