My owner is a home inspector in San Diego.

Since my last three posts were about trains and boats, I thought I would keep with the transportation theme for this post.

Not too far from the Sea Slice was this ship:

Hyundai vehicle ship

That is the ship that I was trying to get to when I found the Sea Slice. Unfortunately, this ship was surrounded by water on three sides and a huge parking lot on the fourth side. There's a reason why it was close to a huge parking lot. Here's the reason:

Hyundai vehicle ship

I watched them drive about 100 cars off the ship, and I don't think they were anywhere near finished. If you look at the center right, you can see a vehicle. This thing probably has 20 or 30 decks in it full of vehicles.

I had no idea Hyundai was doing so well -- LOL.

Russel, we get ships with cars in them here also, but I've never thought of going to the port to check them out. It is amazing to think of how many cars they can fit in there! It's like a 10-story parking deck!

Wow, guess Hyundai is selling lots of cars here, LOL. Great shot!

Hey, Sharon

I never really gave it much thought about how cars get from Japan, Korea, Germany, and other countries to here. I knew they arrived on a ship, but I always pictured a standard freighter ship.

This thing here is big, blocky, and bulky looking. I would hate to think how it fares in a bad storm at sea. I can just imagine something like a snow globe where all the cars in the ship are like all the snow particles in the snow globe tumbling about.

I walked around the fence parking lot trying to get some good pictures of the cars because every car had a car cover on it. Unfortunately, my Canon Rebel XSi is good at taking pictures through chain link fences, but not through the little cracks of solid fences -- LOL I need a remote controlled camera on a remote controlled airplane or kite.

Hey, Andrea - I would love to know how many cars a ship like this holds. I'm not familiar with all of the Hyundai car dealerships here in San Diego, but I just cannot believe that they are selling enough cars to justify this ship load. Of course, I guess it could be a partial shipload, but that wouldn't make much economic sense either. Perhaps some cars were destined for Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Phoenix.

Russel, it is not boats, trains, and ships.  It is supposed to be Planes, Trains, and Automobiles.  You got to get out of the shipyard and out to the airport to finish your theme of blogs.

Russel, I have missed the other two posts, I will look for them.  I like this photo, and it did get the automobiles into the whole travel mode equation!  Great and interesting photo!

I would imagine that they are supplying vehicles to the entire Southwest.  Who knows even the entire nation?  It might be cheaper to unload all the vehicles on the west coast and ship them across the US than having to pay the toll through the Panama Canal and the fuel/time to deliver them to east coast ports.  Time is money.

Russel, I have a photo request, since you are such a master of "ship-pic-taking"?  Could you get some shots of the Midway and any of the big Nimitz class carriers when they come into port?

Thanks!

Now that's a big boy ship...  I do not think I would like the journey on this one!
