Scheming tactics redefined

I'm taking a deep breath before I write this because I know Ardell has hit a nerve with a lot of people in her last post What Does "Bait and Switch" Blogging Say About You?.  First I want to clear up that I did not take this as a personal attack from Ardell and I do know that she had good intentions.  A lot of people don't like the way her message comes across, but that's their opinion......we can all agree that she does get a message across with a BAM!  (TLW, I hope you don't mind if I borrow your staple)

The beauty of Project Blogger goes beyond all the judging and standings, heck I think I'm last place right now, project blogger but I can say that I have gotten way more out of this competition that I could have ever imagined.  I will confess that Kelly's comment made me smile, " It sure would be nice if blogging was a little less like reality and had a nice little list of 'do's' and 'don'ts' that everyone agreed upon. The longer I'm involved in Project Blogger the more confused I get. I miss writing with blissful ignorance".

All the coaches have their style and so do we as apprentices and getting offended or distracted by how the message is portrayed, in my opinion, is not taking full advantage of the competition and loosing out on great lessons.

Paul Chaney gives an incredible perspective because he is THE BLOGGER, he has been blogging for years and even wrote the book, his gentle nature is powerful and what I've learned from him is priceless.

Ardell's perspective is that of a successful real estate blogger that gets a lot of consumer traffic and has been dealing with "consumer bloggin  issues" for a long time - whoever doesn't see that is insane.  She has taken the time to critique other apprentices and she is brutally honest, which by the way, I love and I thank her for it.  Ardell....you can critique me any day.

Jeff Turner IS the consumer.....knock, knock!  OK.  He is also the president of a company that offers a product to the real estate industry (and a great one at that), but he gives us the emotional side of the competition, he teaches us on a daily basis that blogging is about connecting - and I have to add that Rocky, his wife,  Rocks.....there's always an incredible woman behind a successful man.

So here's what I have learned from these 3 coaches with regards to "link baiting" -

  1. there are people, consumers and Realtors alike, that will be annoyed when redirected to another blog, plain and simple.  I am guilty of doing it too often, since my new site, Miamism.com (yes that was a plug) went live and I need to slow down.
  2. Instead of writing "READ MORE......" it is good to be more specific and possibly write "READ THE FULL STORY AT MIAMISM.COM".  That way the reader knows that they will be redirected to another site and will not feel tricked into it.
  3. And lastly, we are all here to learn about blogging, to improve our business, and to get Google Juice, anyone that says otherwise is kidding themselves.

So as we learn, we need to look at all sides of the story and make sure you do things for the right reasons, whether you call those "tactics" or "experiments" or whatever else you come up with.  I think we are educated professionals and can inform ourselves, have our opinions and create our own methods, but it's important to keep an open mind.

Man, I feel lighter!

Ines, I don't think a warning is neccessary with respect to redirecting- that's just sugarcoating.  Your posts are terrific.  What you decide to do about redirecting is your prerogative, and the fact that you introduced your quandary, thought about it, and arrived at a decision indicates that you THINK.  Re-directed (which I disagree with) or not, your buyers and sellers will appreciate your capacity to think about their best interests.

It is pretty interesting how something like blogging, that seemed to start out with people making remarks on their own websites has become something that is carefully analyzed and actually a key aspect of obtaining business. Who would have thunk it?

Ines, one of the things I do like, and that has gotten me over to others' blogs outside AR are mini blogs that summarize a longer, more in depth or controversial post on the other blog. Either blog can stand on it's own but the one provides enough interest to get me to visit the other. Ardell got me over to Rain City when when she posted about the controversy about Zillow revaluing her house. I went over to Jeff Turner's site because of something he wrote about real estate shows. These are just a couple of examples but the point is, each of the AR blogs were stand alone but interesting enough and referenced the other blog to get me to choose to go to the other site. I think you could be really effective with this especially if you are blogging about architecture or historical properties. I think you could write a mini blog (for lack of a better term) about a property and direct folks over to your other blog for a more in depth discussion or more examples. Given a lot of the topics you write about, I could see this being really effective. Just my two cents on this topic.

very nicely written response.  I understand your intent and don't think it was ill-intended and do think that the tone of Ardell's post could have conveyed the same concern in a different than it was with the same end effect in mind. Her post and your response speak tons by themselves.

Ladies...

The cookies wouldn't that bad if many of them did not contain third party web browsers that are placed in the images on the blog site itself. So deleting your cookies makes no difference if you do not delete stored images as well. Third party browsers slow down my browsing speed. If I have too many of them they really effect my ability to "romp"...I need my romping to conduct my occasional hijacks :)

TLW...ROAR!

Ines, I vote for the cat fight instead of the hug and I expect you to Post lots of pictures about it :)

As far as the "Read More" it is self explanatory what it is and no one is forcing anyone else to click on the link.  People on here need to focus more on there own blogs and stop trying to dictate to others what to do on theirs. I enjoy reading your intro's to you other blog and if I don't want to go there I just move on, and that is what everyone else should do instead if it bothers them.

I love someone that is blunt and to the point. I knew what she was trying to say. I can be that way as well. It's difficult because people don't always understand where you are coming from. Wonderful post.

I don't feel "tricked" with links to The Rest of the Story, though I do like your wording of it. It doesn't make sense to duplicate a post, but you can make a valid summary that stands on its own, and then link to a more complete version of the story. I rather like it.

Ines, excellent and as Jeff stated, stasis is not something any of us need or should attempt to control. How you do things whether forwarding and using any particular wording is up to you. It's your blog. You will never please all the people all the time. You have to be true to yourself and do what you feel comfortable doing and to heck with those that feel that they can manipulate you and infringe their value system on to you.

You have done the smart thing. If others chose not to...too bad!

Moderation is ALWAYS the key, right? And as far as cookies go... How come I am never asked to accept milk when I go to a site? Seems like the logical next step.

Ines,

I totally enjoyed this post.  Yes, we all have different styles and intentions.  Best to be objective when reading, right?

Well Ardell is a person that's not afraid to say it like it is, or to push the envelope.  I would just like to have a little more of that, what every it is. . .  I agree that there's some really great bloggers and teachers of it in our midst.  You two do a very good job!  Thanks!

Laurie - I agree - but I think the whole exercise was to realize that some people don't like to be redirected.  As for what the intent is to do it.....whether SEO, to take the customer away from other possible competition or to just introduce a site, it's what we need to get to the bottom of.

Steven - : )  who would have thunk it?

Melissa - that is definitely one of the options, not to include only the first paragraph or couple of lines but a summary.  As a matter of fact, I have seen plenty of posts here in AR where the comments left here make no sense because the reader did not click over and read the rest of the article, a summary would solve that.  Thanks for the idea.

Thanks Janie -but we don't want Ardell to change her ways.....that's the way she is and that's what her customers want, and THAT's what makes her ARDELL!

TLW - did I just hear a GEEK come in the house?  : )

George - the question is who would you put the money on.  LOL!

Christy - so do I - being blunt can sometimes intimidate people or put them on the defensive...and we need to deal with that.

Susie - I'm really glad you joined this place - your energy is so refreshing, thanks!

Sharon - that's what I've been considering, but need to also keep it to a minimum.

Gena - although I agree with you and 90% of the time is exactly what I would do...it's important to know what the consumer thinks of that redirect.  Personally, I have not had many comments here on AR from consumers, but it doesn't mean they are not reading.  For a consumer to think that it is a TRICK, sure makes you think.

Mariana - : )

Diane - absolutely!  but not everyone can be objective.

Cynthia - we need to all be ourselves, but let's make up an imaginary blogger that is a little like Ardell, a little like Jeff and a little like Paul - then you throw a little Mary McKnight sprinkles on him/her and BAM! (sorry again TLW)

Really enjoyed this thoughtful post, Ines. Lots to think about. I always enjoy what you write and you have come so far in your writing. For some reason, this one really stood out for me, particularly when considering the others you wrote about and their own styles. Bravo.

Ines, I really don't think the consumer thinks it's a trick. My personal opinion is that it is a smart thing to do. Perhaps, those that have place to re-direct have issues with it. Anyone savvy about the Internet, should be redirecting if it is something of value to their other site. If not, then no need to redirect. I really don't see the problem here.

You are either a person that the consumer wants to read and have been reading and have already ascertained if you are someone character so a redirect should have no bearing.

As far as comments from consumers, I have found that the current 4 clients that I am working with found me from my blog, spent time reading the blog articles and then telephoned me. They never made one comment. So, don't judge yourself or the effectiveness of your blog by the lack of comments.

You are doing a fabulous job, just the way you are. Sometimes people overthink.

By the way...just love your new blogsite mianism.com...let the juices and redirects flow...

Wow, what a hornet's nest that was stirred up. :)

My personal feeling is I don't like the redirect. There is a quite famous blog that every time I start to read a post, I get the "click here" and I do, and I go off into la la land and I never get to read the article. It is very frustrating. So now when I see the "read more" or "click here" I typically do not do it. I just don't want the headache unless the article is amazing and I have to learn more. But even then I am not sure if I am going to actually read the whole story. I like the gift of time.

But I think, no I know, you are doing a great job sharing what you are learning as an apprentice. There is so much information out there (here) now it is overwhelming. Especially to the perfectionist that wants to do everything correctly.  Kelly's comment was right on the money.

Ardell made a point. She stated her view. She stated the view of consumers. She got us all to think. Think about our posts, our consumers, our way of doing things.

I'm glad we are not penalized for duplicate content because I am guilty of that. Except for this response, I am usually not verbose. I will not be doing the "read more" thing.

Jeff - you know that means a lot to me...thank you!

Gena- I think all arguments are right on, but we need to establish our credibility first.  As for the consumer not commenting, it's part of the business and part of blogging and Paul already gave me the heads up.  I've already gotten a couple of leads from the blog and like you, these customers never commented, thanks for the reminder and thanks for the compliment as well.....you know how hard we have been working on our new sites (you included).

Debi - it's too bad that a couple of bad apples have left a sour taste in our mouths and I appreciate your take on the "redirect" - it's also another factor to consider.
