IT'S GOODBYE TO THE MICHIGAN STATE FAIR !

Last week my wife and I went to the Michigan State Fair.

It is actually one of the longest running state fairs in the country, over 150 years. We don't go every year but read that this is the last year for it, and since one of our fondest memories is sitting through a Journey concert in a downpour when we were still dating, we thought we should make one more trip.

Apparently the state can no longer afford to pay six figures to subsidize the fair, which is held in Detroit, and barring a last minute reprieve from some other investor, this year will be the last.

What a sad testimony to the state of our economy and state of humanity. People are in too much of a hurry to enjoy the simple things like showing animals in the 4-H club contests, listening to outdoor concerts while sitting on a blanket, and the best...

cotton candy, fried dough and all that wonderfully healthy food.

I am not big at attending the Florida State Fair, and do not know if Florida subsidizes it, but it is nice to attend such a fair when the desire strikes.  I would think all state fairs offer a lot of enjoyment, entertainment, and fun to all those that attend, and it is a shame to see it end in any state!

This is weird but I don't even know if Maine has a state fair!  I'm sitting here thinking and I come up with the Fryeburg Fair, the Topsham Fair, The Cumberland County Fair, the Acton Fair, etc. - - these are all local events, smaller in scale, but the experience is the same - - they are predominantly agricultural, food, amusement venues - - true Americana!  We just can't lose this stuff.  So sad about your State Fair but I bet it will go on.  Every year they say it will be the last time the Blue Angels perform their show at the Brunswick Naval Air Station Air Show, but that hasn't ended yet either even though the base is closing!
