I have been a fan of Women's Tennis for as long as I can remember.  I have been avidly watching the US OPEN Tennis Championships at Flushing, New York this week... and have really been enjoying taking the time out of my days and nights... just to sit and enjoy.

Today there have been some rain delays.  Actually, for pretty much the entire day.  Sooo... the folks at the Open have been re-playing some past matches... again... very enjoyable.  BUT...

Today... earlier... there was a replay of a 1999 match between Serena Williams and Martina Hingis.  Perhaps because it was ten years ago... something that has bothered me for some years... really jumped out at me.  It is the crazy, very distracting SCREAMING that many of today's women tennis stars indulge themselves in.

In this match between Ms Hingis and Ms Williams... which Serena won... the screaming was very evident.  Martina Hingis... just simply played excellent tennis.  Serena hit the ball to Martina... and Martina hit it back.  When it was Martina's turn to serve... she simply tossed the ball up in the air... and hit it.  But... when Serena was doing the hitting... this incredible SCREAM came forth.  When Martina hit the ball... again... just exceptional tennis.  No screams... no noise.  I wonder how much all that screaming... way back then... ten years ago... bothered Ms Hingis ?

Then... back to the present.  This evening the Open folks are replaying a match from a few days ago.  The 17 year old sensation Melanie Oudin was playing Maria Sharapova.  Sharapova... some years ago... was the then-current "darling" of the tennis world... accomplishing so much at such an early age.  Now... Melanie Oudin is doing the same.  Surprising everyone with her adept play... and exhibiting a court awareness way beyond her years.

Back to the match.  Once again... every time Melanie hit the ball... nothing but superb tennis.  Whenever Maria Sharapova hit the ball... the SHREIK was so loud... it had to be distracting.  I know that even with me sitting at home, watching the match, I was distracted.

So... for the many'eth time... why all the SCREAMING ?  If I were playing against one of the screamers... I would love to lodge a protest.  Unsportsmanlike conduct.  The rules need to be changed.  The screams must be stopped.

Yes, I know.  Picky, picky, picky.  But... fair... is fair.

I know... it will take a while.  Some habits can take a long time to change.  BUT... nothing can change a habit quite like being given a penalty.  First scream... a warning.  Second scream... perhaps take away that player's "second serve."  But... for the third scream, and every scream thereafter... the screamer loses a point.  Sooner or later... the screamer will lose either a game because of it, or maybe a set, or maybe even lose an entire match if the scream comes at just the right... or wrong critical moment.

Women's tennis fans.  What do you think ?  Should the screaming be deemed "unsportsmanlike conduct ?  I say yes.  Should it be stopped ?  Again, I say yes !

Karen Anne:  I do not follow Tennis as a custom, but I have noticed many times that there is an extreme amount of grunting and other awful noises.  If I didn't know it was tennis, and only listening to the match, I would think it was x-rated.    Maybe it enhances their game.  We should Google it and see. :-)

Hmmm.    Cathy... I am sitting here wondering just HOW... you know there is a lot of grunting and noise-making during x-rated activities.  I am not sure... and I will not comment further... but... hey.... more power to ya, my friend.  LOL.  Enjoy.

Karen Anne:  Please do NOT read anymore into it than what I said.  I promise it  was really nothing more than just a passing thought.   Truly!  ;-)

Karen - I played tennis for years in school and still do, I love tennis and I love watching it. I haven't had the chance to see this young girl play because I don't watch television, isn't that sad?

If I get the chance down in one of the casinos I will try to catch some matches and thanks for the heads up!

Thanks for the chuckle over the x rated noises.  What, no photos of your TV tonight???

Oh and I just reread your comment on my post and I just got the "offence" bit.  D'uh.  It's late and I'm tired.  What else can I say?

Fine Karen Anne... I can take a hint.  The next time I serve an offer on another agent I promise that I will not "grunt" as I hit the send button on the fax machine!  LOL.  :)

Cathy:  Sorry if I caught you off guard with my silly comment.  I have been spending just about the entire day for about the past ten days... PACKING.  I am moving... and have ended each day about as tired as a girl can be.  My silly comment to you... hope you were not offended... was the result of being just about as dead on my feet as possible.  Hope I did not offend...

Robert:  Yennis can be great fun.  I have not had the energy to play tennis for quite a while... but I enjoyed it years ago when I could play,  I mentioned above that I am moving, and during my packing, I found both my racquet and my daughter's, too.  Perhaps that is what started my brain in this tennis direction.

Jenny:  Oh... the photos/  Ooopps... I forgot.  I actually DID take some while I was watching Serena and Martina Hingis play their match from ten years ago.  Martina was such a professional... and wow could she play tennis.  I will have to look at the pictures tomorrow, and put a few of them into the post.

I wondered if you would notice my remark about "taking offence."  I get a little silly when I am tired, too... and I have been tired for about two weeks now.  Packing is so fun !  Moving day is coming soon.

Steve:  So, just what DO you and your fax machine do that elicits these "grunts."  The offers are that bad, huh ?  Or are they that good that you actually enjoy sending them ?  Some things are hard to figure, these days.  Hope you are well...

Karen Anne, I'd asked someone a long time ago why some of them shrieked.  They said the players believed it gave them more strength to hit the ball.  I'm not sure if that's true...

Good luck with the packing, I'm sure you are exhausted.  What hard work!

Karen Anne - My husband was a tennis professional (still teaches, but no longer coaches), so we watch the U.S. Open together on TV.  I asked my husband the same question and he said that they hit the ball so hard these days that the effort involved results in an involuntary grunting from some, but as you say others don't grunt when they hit or not as much.  For contrast we looked at the match between Tracy Austin and Chris Evert, when Tracy won the U.S. Open.  They were playing with wood rackets which don't generate a lot of power and the game looked so funny.  We cracked up laughing.  I could beat Tracy Austin in that game, if I used a modern racket, and I'm not a good player.

Carole:  I'm not so sure of that, either.  I think it's just an excuse.  And... I would think it would be very distracting to the other player... if the other player was not also screaming and shrieking.  But wow... wasn't tonight's match between Serena and Kim Clijsters just amazing ?

Thanks for your concern about my packing.  Yes... I am thoroughly pooped.  Not my most favorite thing.  By the way... nice to see you here... please come back... :)

Gail:  I just cannot agree with all this grunting.  And honestly, if I was playing against a really loud "grunter"... I would complain.

I would have loved seeing the match between Chris Evert and Tracy Austin.  What a different time in Women's tennis... even though it was not all that long ago.  Chris Evert... was everybody's sweetheart.  And... wasn't Tracy Austin the one with the ruffly rhumba panties ?  I think maybe so.  I used to have a guy friend who loved to watch her play.  And whenever he would ogle her... I, of course, would hit him with the nearest pillow.  Memories... :)

I'll bet it looked funny with the wooden racquets... compared to the monster ones they use now.
