Remember when?

Remember when you saw the first person using a mobile phone and thought why would anybody do that?  Remember when you saw your first bottled water and thought why not buy a soda?  Remember when your TV had 4 or 5 channels and when cable first came to town why do I want 26 channels?  I can remember people telling me they do not and will not use email or text messaging.  I can remember working 8 hours a day and taking an actual lunch!  So have you seen changes in your lifestyle, work habits and how you conduct your daily life?  I am betting you have made major changes in your life, your career and your outlook on what it takes to be a functioning member of today's sociality.

No matter what your career choice is the internet has changed our life and for many of us it has changed our social life.  Emailed changed the way we communicate with friends, text messaging changed the we communicate with friends now Social Media is changing the way we communicate not only to friends but colleagues, clients and prospective business contacts.

Today 550 million people participate in Social Networking, today Facebook has passed email as the number one content sharing medium.  Here are a few facts about Social Networking;

Women over 55 are the fastest growing demographics on Facebook.  52% of Twitter users are over 35 and only 5% are under 18. LinkedIn - 11 million users average 42 visits per user per month. 96% of GenY is on Social Media....Next year they will be the dominant group.

Bottom line your friends, family, clients and your future clients are using Social Networking, are you?

On Saturday October 17th we are planning 7 hours of Internet Technology and Social Networking to help everybody have a better understanding of what life today almost requires to ‘survive' both personally and professionally.

Dick,

Yep, I remember when...for a lot of those things!

As for "Women over 55 are the fastest growing demographics on Facebook", maybe that's why I'm now hearing from so many friends and clients! I'll click on over and check your link.

Mobile phone heck.  I remember the first time I saw a phone with a dial so that you could call a number without talking to the local operator first.  In our town, it was Floy and you couldn't make calls after she went to bed.

You need to get your name in on the just announced Rain Camp.  You would be a terrific speaker.

Hey Dick. I wanted to say "Thanks" once again for all the help in replacing my Treo. Still learning the new features... a bit at a time.

When will you be holding this class in Central Florida? Count me in!

After reading your blog, I turned to Facebook to check out some stats.  Here is what I found:

General Growth

  • More than 300 million active users
  • 50% of our active users log on to Facebook in any given day
  • The fastest growing demographic is those 35 years old and older

User Engagement

  • Average user has 130 friends on the site
  • More than 6 billion minutes are spent on Facebook each day (worldwide)
  • More than 40 million status updates each day
  • More than 10 million users become fans of Pages each day

It will be interesting to compare these numbers in six months, then again in one year to compare the user growth and engagement.

Thanks for peaking my curiosity!

I worked with a guy in the 1980's who had a big bulky leather bag  that contained a mobile phone.  He's unzip it, plug it into the cigarette lighter and talk away.  I remember thinking, "I don't know anybody who is so important, that I'd need to call them from my car!.  Boy things have changed.  PS. Just embedded my face book into my A.R. blog.

I once worked in the electronics industry selling test fixtures to manufacturers of hard drives, pagers (remember those?) and a few customers who were making cell phones.  I visited a Nokia manufacturing plant in Sweden and thought to myself..."Are these guys stupid!  Who would EVER buy more than one cell phone. Why are they making do many?" Boy, was I short sighted!
