Lazy does not mean, you are entitled to handicapped parking!  $250.00 fine for laziness!

Lazy is not a handicap

I was so upset today when I was showing my customer property.  The unit involved has underground parking, however she is handicapped and those spots were all taken.  When we sat and waited for a spot (she didn't want me to leave her at the door alone)...we saw people coming out of the unit obviously with a real estate agent. All could walk just fine...they were young.  I got out of my car (probably shouldn't have) and asked her who was handicapped?  She said, "No one".  I just use my Dad's handicapped sign for convenience when I show properties.  I said, "Well, that's really sad, because we've been sitting here for 20 minutes waiting for a handicapped spot as my customer is legally disabled."  She said, "Oh well, too bad for you, you should find a relative to "steal" a sticker from.  Now, I'm livid!

I walk away, angry as heck...show the property...and I'm still angry when I leave.  I don't know her name, I don't know who she works for, however...the gift of a security guard and a gate community allowed me to see who this incredibly ignorant agent was.  We had to sign in...I saw her name and her brokerage.

Should I say something, or should I let it go?????????

Karen, wow, I would be upset too! I see people all the time who appear to be perfectly fine and young parking in handicapped spots. How rude of her to flaunt what she was doing right in front of you! I would want to say something but would probably let it go. Imagine how her customer felt?

Sharon,

I cannot even imagine how her customer must have felt.  My customer was visibly hurt as, it is not her fault that she is handicapped...she needed help getting in an out of the car.  It was a sad situation...I think the fact that my customer needed the parking space and the fact that my customer looked so sad/somewhat guilty of her condition told the whole story!

You absolutely should say something.   She can't make handicapped people sit there waiting.  It isn't fair. It isn't right.  Those spots are labelled for a reason.
Here, if the City knew someone was 'borrowing' a handicapped sign, they would revoke.  Maybe that's what they need, so they don't abuse it.

Her customers couldn't have been much better than she was... or they would have stopped her from using the spot in the first place.

Karen,  I used to get upset when I saw this happening.  But then I realized that all these pople are really handicaped -- mentally handicapped.  In answer to your question, I would send a copy of your excellent post to her Broker.

I could read the emotion between the lines in your post as to how up set you are and it is understandable! Guess good citizenship is no longer a subject that is taught at home or in schools; sadly selfishness is more common now than good behavior.

Karen, I think you definitely should complain to her broker or someone.  My husband has very painful disabilities - but even he only uses his handicap placard when he is in too much pain to walk very far.  Some days, he feels good enough to not use it - and leaves the handicap space for someone else.  What this woman did was not only ignorant but illegal.

Sylvie,

They didn't even have a sticker, my customer did however.  It is just a terrible abuse.

Gary,

That is a great suggestion.  My customer finally got to see the property.  I haven't heard from him in a few days as he was so upset.  I left him a message today.  Hopefully, he will call me back.  This situation is why REALTORS(r) in general have a bad reputation and I don't like it.

Mary,

Yes, I am upset!  As an agent with a 25 year career in the medical field, I care about people, that is why I am irritated with the ignorance displayed by this agent!  Thank you for your comment.

Jane,

My mother is another one...she can hardly walk, but if there is a close spot that is not handicapped, she will use that before she will park in the handicapped spot...she always tells me that there is possibly someone worse than her.  What jerks my chain is when someone does have a handicapped sign to put in their car and they get out and run into the store.  These people are abusing the system.

Qualification of "him" was her son...my sister caught this - so I am correcting...the woman was offended and I was speaking with her son.  Just for the record.
