Kathy Alexander, a local staging colleague and A/R member, invited me to a Grand Finale party hosted by Dan Vickery, HGTV's Season 4 Design Star finalist.  The big bash was held at Kell's Irish Pub in downtown Portland this evening, where they had large screens set up to play the actual HGTV Season 4 Finale show.

We arrived early to get a good table (and had a cocktail before ordering a delicious Irish dinner) and soon a big white limo pulled up outside and out popped Dan Vickery with some of his family & friends ... when Dan walked into the pub, everyone cheered and he happily posed for photos with his "fans" and even signed autographs.  Dan was accompanied by a gorgeous tall brunette who he later introduced as his girlfriend, Rose.  Dan is extremely gracious and about the nicest, most humble person you could meet.  Not to mention what a talented designer he is!

There were multiple huge screens set up in the pub, and once the actual HGTV Season 4 finale started, during the intermissions Dan stood at the mic and took questions from the audience.  We learned some interesting things about the show, some of which may surprise you:

  • The "Elimination Rounds" actually take 10 to 12 hours!  There is a lot of editing done to whittle them down to just a few minutes on each weekly episode.  Dan said the atmosphere during these rounds is quite tense.
  • None of the Design Star contestants are paid for their time on the show.  Their accommodation and meals are provided, but nothing more.  They work an average of 14-16 hours each day for 6 weeks and exist on about 6 hours of sleep each night.  Dan said his Oregon family was hugely supportive of his entering the competition and that he couldn't have done it without their help.
  • There is no interaction between the contestants and the judges (Vern Yip, Candice Olson, and Genevieve Gorder) during the filming of the show -- only at the Elimination Rounds.

  • Where do the "Helper carpenters" come from for the Grand Finale?  The producers run an ad on Craigslist!
  • How do the families and their homes get on the show?  The producers figure out which neighborhoods are relatively easy to get permits in, and go knocking on doors.  Anyone who participates gets all the work done for free.  After the designers do their work, a professional construction crew follows up to correct any deficiencies and to make sure everything is done according to local code.

Kathy & I put this sign on our table so there was no doubt who we thought the winner was!

Although Dan was the Runner-Up we think he did a fantastic job ... and we hope he'll win the "on line show" on HGTV.  There's still time to go to their website and vote for Dan!  That competition ends on Tuesday Sept. 15th @ 5pm EST.

Here's a few photos of Dan tonight during the Grand Finale Party held in his honor ... he was a superb host!

I did not see the show but how fun for you to meet him. I voted for him-I trust your opinion.

Maureen -- What an exciting way to watch the finale of Design Star.....with one of the finalists!  Dan was my favorite designer right from the start.  I completely forgot that I could vote for him to win the "online" show.....so I am going to do that right now.

I think if the winner had been chosen by viewers, as in past seasons, Dan would have won hands down.  His style is more sophisticated and polished than Antonio's.  I think the judges wanted someone "edgy" in both design prowess and hosting skills.

Cathy -- thanks for voting for Dan ~ He is so talented and so very nice!  I hope he wins the "online HGTV" show competition.

Judy ~ I agree with you wholeheartedly!  Dan's designs were far and away the best of the Season 4 contestants.  The funny thing is, tonight hosting his party, Dan did a superb job.  We like his laugh and so does his family!

I was shocked when he didn't win. Absolutely shocked. Not that Antonio was bad, mind you, but I just thought Dan has better designs. Although, with that extreme time crunch, I don't know how either of them did it. They are both amazing.

We were shocked too, Michelle! I'm not certain what Dan's next adventure will be, but no doubt some new doors will open up for him as a result of being a finalist on Design Star.  He is so talented.

Oh...Irish green envy!!!  And what a perfect spot, for the Irish gal and friends to see the show.  My vote went to Dan throughout the show, but I agree with Judy that Antonio's edgy demeanor is probably what got him the part.  Dan is more refined and perhaps a bit too much like David Bromstad.  I'll bet that the producers played a big part in the decision along with the judges.  I knew when I got online this morning that you would post after the party, before sleep. Thanks for sharing Maureen.

Ginger ~ As it turned out it was a perfect spot to watch the grand finale show.  Kathy and I really enjoyed being there but have to admit we felt "robbed" when the winner was announced.

Kimberly ~ from the very beginning there were two very strong candidates this season.  I hope you enjoy watching it!

Kathleen ~ Dan seemed to really appreciate the crowd at the pub and was so gracious.  He comes from a small town in Eastern Oregon and had "home town fans" there cheering him on too.

Hi Maureen!

Great recap of our adventure last night!  I still can't believe that he lost. His 'white room' challenge will go down as the best ever. Antonio just lost me as a viewer. I can't imagine his designs being anything I would want to emulate.

The energy at the pub was such fun and it was also great to see how the locals turned out to support a talented, yet humble, guy. All the Hollywood glitz and glamour doesn't seem to have changed him!

Sorry, that was me making the last comment! Thought I was logged in!!!

I agree that Dan was the better designer, but was possibly outdone by Antonio's fresh approach to hosting.  I can see him in the future getting crude and insulting clients!!  Who knows maybe that's what they are looking for!  I am rather surprised by the girlfriend named Rose.  Thanks for sharing with us.

Kathy ~ THANK YOU for setting it up for us to be at the party -- it was such fun!  I completely agree with you that Dan's "white room challenge" was exceptional, and it was fun last night when he talked about how he came up with that idea while in the grocery store!  I'm not the least bit interested in seeing Antonio's show, too bad.

Lori ~ I agree that Antonio could come across as brash and a bit rough.  I much prefer Dan's more sensitive approach with his design clients.  You never know these days what HGTV is doing to improve ratings, though!

Maureen-- I am green with envy!  How exciting to have been there and meet him!  When he did his "deconstructed apple orchard" I knew he was the best we had seen-- it was genius.  I really thought he'd win but I'm sure they are thinking Antonio will bring in better ratings.  Antonio has spark, but I prefer Dan's designing-- hands down!

Maureen -- saw your post on the reblog -- and just wanted to come over and read  the comments.  I was truly disappointed in the outcome.  Much preferred Dan over Antonio  (didn't like his personality, won't watch a show by him) - Thought Dan the better designer.  But as others have said -- perhaps they wanted someone a bit crude for a change.

Michele ~ It was exciting to be there with Dan at the finale. We were just shocked that he didn't win -- however, please go to the website link in my post and vote for him today and tomorrow for the "online" show.  He needs our support now more than ever, because early on most viewers probably assumed Dan would win the competition and may have voted for other designers for the online show.  P.S.  Thanks for the re-blog.

Alexsandra ~ we were so disappointed too!  I'm just not interested in any show hosted by Antonio -- he's probably a great set builder but not a true "designer."  His rooms were never accessorized properly.  I'm sure Dan will have a great opportunity coming his way.  Be sure to vote for him for the "online" show (link in the post).

Hi again-- I did go onto the link and voted for him the 10 times I was allowed!  Thanks for the reminder about that-- I hadn't voted for anyone and I'm still rooting for him.  I'm also going to post the link on FB :-)

That's super, Michele!  I hope that lots of people will vote today and tomorrow for Dan.  Good thinking to put it on FB too!

How exciting!  I was so upset that he didn't win because he was the one to beat in my opinion.  He is a very talented designer and will go far in his career!  I just voted 10 times from two different computers and asked my friends on Facebook to do the same.  Thanks for sharing!

Charissa ~ Great to hear that you're getting the vote out for Dan!!  Let's see if we can all spread the word today and tomorrow so that Dan gets the HGTV online show (at least).

I also preferred Dan.  Dan comes across as more polished.  His clients were thrilled with his work on the competition.  I don't know why he didn't win!

Bev ~ At least Dan won the HGTV Online Show ... whatever that is!   From the HGTV blog comments, it looks like way more people will be watching the Online version with Dan, rather than watch Antonio.  I'd much prefer seeing Dan's classic and sophisticated style!

I just saw this post Maureen. I was sad that he didn't win. I truly believe he had the best design at the end of the day. I was not a fan of Antonio's final design. He did a good job hosting. I think that is what did it for him. He was different and unique to anything else that HGTV has on right now and that put him over the edge. Dan did such a great job. I voted for him online and I hope he won. I haven't checked. Thanks so much for sharing this with us. Kym

Kym ~ Dan won Fan Favorite for Season 4 of Design Star -- so he will have his own online show (whatever that may be!)  He is really a talented designer and also a super-nice guy.
