Roofball . . . A Portland Original . . . Sport(??)

RoofballHave you heard about the next, Great American sports phenom ... Roofball

Don't worry . . . no one else has either.

This "sport" is really pretty lame, and doesn't require much skill.  Although, I'm sure the Roofball. enthusiasts will argue that it's a very technical skill, that requires years of training . . . but I doubt it.

The Roofball concept is simple:  1) Throw a rugby onto the roof, near a vent.  2) Score points.

Roofball scoring is as follows:

  • Ball goes around the vent pipe = 10 points
  • Ball "pings" the vent (hits it) = 5 points
  • Ball bonus catch (after it comes off the roof) = 1 point
  • Ball "pings" little vent =  5 points
  • Ball "over" house = -5 points
  • Ball "hits" car (parked in driveway) = -1 point

I discovered Roofball when I was clicking TV channels, and saw this inane (next) Great American pass time.  I was amazed that it was even being televised . . . but it was.  There's a referee, score keepers, play-by-play analysis . . . and the players.  Leagues have formed, and there are CHAMPIONSHIPS each year!

And I sat and watched . . . grown men throwing the rugby ball up on the roof . . . near the air vent . . . for points.

It's very original, and all I can say is . . . it FIGURES it was first played here in Portland.

Oh contrare!!!!

I invented this "sport" back in 1968.  However, it wasn't with a football, it was with my little brother's teddy bear.  I would put it in a four-point stance in the back yard and kick it up on the roof.  I would dance the "scored" dance and my pesky little brother would scream and cry.  He deserved it, of course.  Somehow, my mother never did see it that way.  But then again, she didn't see him breaking all my model airplanes on the front porch at 6:00AM either.  But that's another post.

Fond memories.  My little brother is now 47, and we still talk about that "sport" at family get-tegethers.  Our kids love to hear us talk about it.

Carla - I grew up in Beaverton, and I really think someone saw me playing this game back when I was a child, took the idea and ran with it.  I used to sit in from of our garage for hours and throw a nerf football on our roof and try and catch it when I was younger.

Hi Michelle -- I'm so glad I was helpful in rounding it all out for you ;-)

Hey Mike  . . . I didn't realize this was such a "guy" thing -- I never heard of it until that fateful day when I was channel surfing.  Funny story too . . . POOR TEDDY!!

Howdy Troy -- WOW, a Beaverton native AND the inventor of Roofball, what are the odds?  Do you currently compete . . . LOL!

My sons used to play a version of this with tennis balls.  But the points on each bounce were contingent on Goldie, the family Golden Retriever, catching the ball as it came to the ground.

We had a roof that formed a shallow U as you faced it from the back yard.  The ball could come back to earth from any of three "sides".

Goldie was a champion at anticipating where the ball would be coming down..solely from the sound as it bounced (since she was not tall enough to see the ball bouncing on the roof).

We also went around the various vents and pipes protruding from the roof.

We didn't rate having ESPN Game Day on hand.

Sorry I don't have a video.

Oh yes, further proof that if you give bored people too much time, and a ball, that a new sport is bound to break out. What the heck, I would play.

Thanks Jim -- I like your version with the back-up catcher, the beloved Goldie!!  The Roofball Federation should be updating their "roof lines" cause yours sounds as if the ball would be highly unpredictable that way.

Hey JL  . . . I'm SO convinced this is a "dude" thing . . . even Michelle's comments thanking me (she never heard of it), and the guys either have, or like you, are willing to play!!  HA HA HA
