For those of you who are fans of HGTV's Design Star!

Kathy Alexander, a local staging colleague and A/R member, invited me to a Grand Finale party hosted by Dan Vickery, HGTV's Season 4 Design Star finalist.  The big bash was held at Kell's Irish Pub in downtown Portland this evening, where they had large screens set up to play the actual HGTV Season 4 Finale show.

We arrived early to get a good table (and had a cocktail before ordering a delicious Irish dinner) and soon a big white limo pulled up outside and out popped Dan Vickery with some of his family & friends ... when Dan walked into the pub, everyone cheered and he happily posed for photos with his "fans" and even signed autographs.  Dan was accompanied by a gorgeous, tall brunette who he later introduced as his girlfriend, Rose.  Dan is extremely gracious and about the nicest, most humble person you could meet.  Not to mention what a talented designer he is!

There were multiple huge screens set up in the pub, and once the actual HGTV Season 4 finale started, during the intermissions Dan stood at the mic and took questions from the audience.  We learned some interesting things about the show, some of which may surprise you:

  • The "Elimination Rounds" actually take 10 to 12 hours!  There is a lot of editing done to whittle them down to just a few minutes on each weekly episode.  Dan said the atmosphere during these rounds is quite tense.
  • None of the Design Star contestants are paid for their time on the show.  Their accommodation and meals are provided, but nothing more.  They work an average of 14-16 hours each day for 6 weeks and exist on about 6 hours of sleep each night.  Dan said his Oregon family was hugely supportive of his entering the competition and that he couldn't have done it without their help.
  • There is no interaction between the contestants and the judges (Vern Yip, Candice Olson, and Genevieve Gorder) during the filming of the show -- only at the Elimination Rounds.

  • Where do the "Helper carpenters" come from for the Grand Finale?  The producers run an ad on Craigslist!
  • How do the families and their homes get on the show?  The producers figure out which neighborhoods are relatively easy to get permits in, and go knocking on doors.  Anyone who participates gets all the work done for free.  After the designers do their work, a professional construction crew follows up to correct any deficiencies and to make sure everything is done according to local code.

Kathy & I put this sign on our table so there was no doubt who we thought the winner was!

Although Dan was the Runner-Up we think he did a fantastic job ... and we hope he'll win the "on line show" on HGTV.  There's still time to go to their website and vote for him!  That competition ends on Tuesday Sept. 15th @ 5pm EST.

Here's a few photos of Dan tonight during the Grand Finale Party held in his honor ... he was a superb host!

I watched the show -- and was disappointed in the judges selection!  Didn't much care for Antonio - the winner -- really thought Dan was more personalble and likable -- also preferred some of his solutions. thanks for the fun post!

I loved Dan and thought he should've won hands down!  His designs were lovely and he came across as such a sweet, friendly person on screen and you could tell that it wasn't an act, he's a genuinely nice person.  I hope he wins the online show AND gets his own TV show, too!  GO DAN!!!

Dan has an enormous fan base from all over.  The blogs on HGTV website indicate the overwhelming disappointment the HGTV viewing audience is voicing.  Masses believe Dan was the true designer.  They had to offer a second part blog after they received over 3,000 blogs in a short period of time last night and they 'experienced technical difficulty'.

Almost every blog expressed shock and a lot of suspiscion that there was not a fair judging.  A lot of questions should be addressed by HGTV.  The biggest controversy being, was the entire contest a gimmick scheme and was the winner actually determined (before the competition even began) by marketing execs that knew, even if it is negative publicity, it would be publicity?...  Of course, at this point we could guess what the answer would be, and most likely there would not be any confessions.

There are a lot of us 'Dan Fans' out here that are not going to give up hope that HGTV will give Dan a show.  He certainly earned it!  Good Luck Dan, we will be enjoying your design talents and hopefully soon!

Alexsandra:  I think a lot of people were disappointed!  I loved Dan's designs!

Mimi:  I was thrilled to have found this blog and hear what it was like to meet him-- it sounds like he is genuinely a really nice guy.  And I, for one, liked his giggle!

Beth:  I am just realizing how popular he is!  I'm also hoping that maybe with the public's voice behind him, he gets his own show!  As soon as I saw what he did with those apples, I knew he was an amazing designer!

This is one of several comments I've left on the HGTV website. I've just gotten more disgusted and disheartened with the network and the judges since the DS show Sunday. Wish Dan all the success in the world - he IS the true DS this season! Trust me, HGTV is getting an outpouring of support for Dan - not so much for their Antonio!

HGTV, where is your integrity and credibility these days? IMHO, Vern, Candice and Genevieve, your integrity / credibility is certainly in doubt after your judging decision on DS Sunday evening. A mediocre carpenter was chosen Design Star over an extremely talented architect/designer who clearly was the class of the field this season! I just reviewed YOUR fan stats re Antonio and Dan. Dan's designs received 61,591 views with an overall fan rating of 4.0. Antonio, your chosen one, received 40,014 views with an overall fan rating of 2.9. What's wrong with this picture? We, HGTV viewers, took the time to peruse your website, rate the designs and designers. You obviously don't care who the majority of us fans prefer as DS, or you don't monitor your own stats. Dan derserved to win his own show for many valid reasons - Antonio should have been booted off DS in the early episodes. This is one HGTV viewer who won't be watching Mr. Pseudo-Macho's 'big, bad, and bold' show. Horrid choice HGTV!

Sorry Joy-- I had to delete the last comment because of the language!  Maybe HGTV's blog doesn't care, but I do :-)  It really shows you just how HOT an issue is!  Like you, I am very disappointed.  I'm hoping that person who wrote that isn't representative of Antonio's fans!

It is true that HGTV had the guile to be deceitful this Design Star season and they are still doing it. The have deleted thousands of blog entries (that didn't have foul language or anything like that) from so many of us who expressed our feelings about how Dan should have been the Design Star Winner. Many of us also feel disgusted that HGTV had obviously pre-chosen the winner and twistedly edited video clips to try to make Antonio look better while defaming the other wonderful contestants. There is no plausable excuse for HGTV's behavior this season. Even the judges seemed preprogrammed to play HGTV's game. I can't for the life of me believe that Candice would even remotely like Antonio's challenge results and Vern seemed to want to go with Dan but the network must have swayed him too. If you look at Geneveive's glances back and forth to Vern, you can see her nervous discomfort. I also believe that the comments, "This is getting harder and harder" and "Vern, you didn't tell me it was going to be this hard" was because they were forced to try to make Antonio look better than the other contestants and they knew very well that he wasn't. They didn't even point out all the flaws of Antonio's that some of the other contestants got eliminated for doing/not doing. HGTV even took away the vote results so that we couldn't see what they were doing with it. God only knows what they were doing or not doing with our votes. Dan was innovative and his designs were by far the best and beautiful to the point that I would love to have them in my own home. Antonio's redo's (can't call them designs because he didn't design anything himself) were terrible and not appropriate for the rooms he was redoing. HGTV let all of it's regular fans down.

I've been taping every episode of the Design Challenge because Dan's originality really got me hooked.  He has too much STAR quality to settle for an on line show.  Hope another network offers him the real deal.  I wouldn't want to support a network that does not operate with integrity, be it on or off line.

Thanks all!  There a lots of Dan fans!  So happy he is so loved!

Maureen:  You're welcome!  Great, fun, and interesting posts should be passed on :-)  Am still disappointed Dan didn't win but I am so glad he at least won the online show.  And-- he has plenty of fans so I'm hoping everyone watches and it turns into bigger and better things for him!  Thanks again for a great post!

I was not even a big fan of Dan and I think he was by far the better choice over Antonio. I, too, felt the judges were not sincere - they sounded uncomfortable in their comments. Antonio, from the beginning, operated like a contractor with some design ideas.  He did not seem to have talent to pull an entire room together which was evident in the last 2 design challenges.  Hope Dan gets his own show. Vern Yips comments about Dan's laugh seemed particularly "staged." From the outside looking in, it sure seems like Vern was chosen to spearhead the design judges into selecting Antonio.
