My wife wrote about this a while ago, but I think it's worth a re-visit, since we have had so many new ActiveRainers sign up since then.

This post is about the Vanity Telephone number.  I think any mortgage broker or Realtor is going to find this post very useful.

So imagine that somebody wants to recommend you to a friend-- wants to give you a referral.  Of course, the former client doesn't actually have your card on him, so he tells his friend that he'll look you up and call and...

We know where this is going.  You never get the referral 75% of the time.

But then...wait!  The client tells his friend that he remembers your telephone number, because he would never forget it-- it's 877-777-TONY.

I'll explain the best way for you to get a number like that, within five minutes of reading this article.  And it's cheap:

Visit the AT&T toll free number look-up tool and you'll see the following:

vanity number

So-- and this is really the best way to do it-- take the bare minimum at first.  In other words, if you would like the number 800-ASK-TONY, try starting out with just Tony.  If you get results back (available phone numbers), then you can narrow it down further.

The asterisks are wild cards.  Use asterisks when you are open to anything.  So because I only care about the word Tony right now, I'll use asterisks for the rest of the number.

Here are the results:

search results

Now this is important:  At the very most, you will get back ten hits.  So, because our search results already kicked out the maximum number of choices (10), that means there are many more "Tony" phone numbers.

I notice that they all start with 877.  Let's get a little more selective.

Let's try putting in 877-77*-TONY

Maybe we'll get lucky and take home 877-777-TONY.  But I put the asterisk, so I could see more options.  Remember, just keep narrowing it down...

results

And that gives us:

877-770-TONY

Only four results.  So 877-777-TONY is not available, because it would be here if it was.  Remember, we used the asterisk (*) wild card in third position.

But I will tell you what:  If I were a Realtor named Tony, I would snatch up 877-770-TONY.

So how much will all this cost?

Pennies.  Practically nothing in the big picture-- especially if you advertise the heck out of it.

About SIX CENTS per minute, plus a small monthly fee (I think it's about $15).  You can have all calls forwarded to your cell phone.  And remember, you only pay for the calls that come in on that number.  So worst case scenario, you spend $15 per month to keep it active and give it some time to saturate your local public.

Plus, I think you have the added bonus of looking more professional, with a big-shot national toll-free number.

Here's the link: http://businessesales.att.com/products/lookup_toll_free_results.jhtml

And one more tip:  Let's say you have a name with seven or more letters.  So you want "1-800-MICHELE" of course.  But, let's be honest, you probably aren't going to get it.

You could always try 877-77-MICHELE.  In reality your number will be 877-77M-ICHE, and everybody might dial two extra digits to reach you, but they'll remember 877-77-MICHELE whether its two digits too long or not.  So get creative!

And if you get a good one, please come back here at make it known to all.

~Michael George

P.S.--

Great idea!  Just ordered mine 877-770-JUDI routed to my cell phone. Super easy!   Took maybe 10 minutes and month to month service is cheap.  Can't wait to plaster it all over the place.  Th!anks so much for the tip

I have been considering a vanity phone number..so you did get one.. and it's worth it??

I was lucky. When I changed my number to my local area the guy at ATT went through the available ones and one was 813-783-4444 The 783 is a very common exchange here so almost no one has to write it down. Easy to remember and it did not cost me a penny extra. Perhaps not quite as good as yours but not bad and free.

I find with my retiree customers numbers are easier for them to remember than for them to have to hunt and peck to spell out a word. But whatever works for you. The important thing is to have something that makes your number stick in the customers' minds.

Hello Michael, Kat and I picked up vanity numbers several years ago and they are much fun.  She's 888-KALL-KAT and I'm 888-KALL-JWS -- very much worth it.  John

PS - the famous Tony Robbins years ago was snatching up all the "800" numbers that went 800-(State Area Code)-TONY.  A friend of mine named Tony had picked up the "800-Hawaii-code-TONY" and Tony Robbins wanted it very badly!

Great Tip! Looks easy too. I have had the same cell phone number for about 14 years. It ends in "1949" . People tell me quite often that they find that very easy to remember (maybe its cuz I hang out with an old crowd....)

That is a great Idea.  I just don't want to add any more costs to my overhead right now in this economy.

8:28pm • #17

I can never figure out what to dial with vanity#'s. On my blackberry the letters don't correspond to the numbers like they should. Using the 888-KALL-KAT example(BTW Very Cute!) I would dial 888-6???-6?2. The 'A' and 'L' don't have numbers on my keypad. Does anyone have a workaround for this problem? I don't have a landline phone.

Michael - This is a great idea.  I'm not sure if we, in Canada, have access to as many of the toll free numbers that you have in the USA.

Michael I have a toll free number that matches the number I carry in my cell phone.  I got it from RingCentral.com.  My cell is 512-***-6320 and my toll free number is 888-***-6320. That number is also my toll free internet fax number.   I did pay extra to get it $30.00 but part of the reason I went with RingCentral.com was their search feature for toll free numbers.

Great ideas.  My assigned cell number ends in 4289, or 4BUY, and my Google Voice number ends in MTN1.  I have also used this successfully in another industry.

This is one of the best marketing tools!  You can also search for local "vanity" numbers when calling to set up new phone service.  I came up with several that I wanted for our office...409-744-GMAC was on the top of my list, and I was fortunate enough to get it.  I also had some that ended in "HOME," "SOLD," and "4-SALE."  The local phone company was very helpful in searching available numbers.  It's fun coming up with catchy ways to get the consumer's attention.  And, any time I can make it easier for them to remember me, I'm all for it!

I also have 877-218-GMAC.  The local exchange (218 - Clear Lake area) happens to be utilized outside of Galveston, but is still close enough to farm.  With the "218", it looks like my office is located in Clear Lake!  Thanks for the reminder about this great service!
