While conducting an unintended archeological dig in what used to be my son's room, tucked away in the hollow space under the headboard I found this relic of the real estate business.  To think we used to do business carrying these things around and dog earing pages of favorite listings as we waited for the latest update to come out.real estate zone books

So much about the business was different then.  We (at least most of us) had no presence on the developing web.  There was no Facebook, Twitter, Linked In or any of the other social media avenues to interact with our consumers or each other.  Most of the agents I knew back then didn't even have cell phones.  Some carried beepers, then searched, sometimes in vain for a telephone on the road to return their calls.  For me, I've carried a phone with me since it was call "transportable" and was the size of an attache case.

The one thing this brings to mind for me is that the only constant in this world is change.  Don't ever get too complacent with the tools of the trade, no matter how well you think they work, because you can bet your boots just around the corner is a newer and better way to get the job done.

Geri, those are sort of cool in a retro sort of way.  I would hate to go back to doing business like that, but they are a reminder of just how far and how quickly we've come!

Always a good reminder to remember the basics. Remember when then was no fax machine, then fax was everything, now no fax machine again?

WOW!!! Those are antiques!  :o)))  I remember riding around in the back seat of the car with my feet on a pile of those books!  I remember when we couldn't believe how we ever did business without a FAX and then it was cell phones and then e mail...now it's social networking, smart phones and netbooks!  I am waiting for those Star Trek holograms so I can show more than one set of clients at one time! :o)))  Thanks for the walk down memory lane!

I remember when the broker of my then office told us that we could now access listings on the computer.  Spellbound we followed him to the one computer in the office and learned how to access them.  They then printed out on that roll of paper with the holes you had to tear off.  So many agents said at the time they'd never be able to function without their 4 up listings.  How would they cope?  Funny looking back.

Geri, now there's a blast from the past!!  I haven't seen one of those in 12 years!!!  It certainly brings back memories.

I was on the other end back then as a client and not an agent.  I do recall my agent advising of when the next listings would come out.

I still have 2 of those and 2 books nearly the same of stock trading days too... Maybe I need to retire again.

We are so ultraconnected these days that it is hard to conceive of having pockets of quarters for the pay phone, MLS books, no lock boxes - pick up keys all over town, etc.  It all seemed so normal then.  I guess it is easier taking the time to learn the new technologies rather than do business the old fashioned way.  Thanks for the memory jar.

I became a real estate agent just after they got rid of the books - never saw them.

Those books were heavy, outdated almost before they came out and you had to pay for them.  Agents in the office who wouldn't cough up the money always wanted to borrow yours.

Lise - You missed nothing by getting in just after the books went the way of the dinosaur

Jim - You'd probably be shocked to hear that we still often have to pick up keys on Long Island.  Many homeowners here don't want lock boxes.

John -  You don't want to go and retire now.  Not when I'm sure you're having so much fun.

Richard -  The good thing about getting into this business after having been a buyer is you hopefully remembered what your needs were and could bring that to your business to serve your clients better.

June - Think I should save the old dinosaurs?  Maybe I can make a fortune on eBay.

Tony & Darcy - I suspect it won't be too long before we laugh about the antiquated ways of today.

Joe -  Too true.  Personally I don't miss faxes.  I used to get so frustrated at the waste of all those faxes that came in during the wee hours of the morning.  It was fax spam.  How lucky are we today that we can just click delete.

Jeani - I have to wonder what's out there just around the bend to make today's technology obsolete.

Edward - How right you are.  Keep up we must or fall by the wayside as our colleagues trample us in the race to the latest and greatest technology.

Oh, how funny!  I've heard about these but have never seen one.  You just never know what you'll find in you kid's room.

How funny to see those old books and remember when long time agents were certain the world was coming to an end when we converted to listings online & no books.  Hopefully I will adapt gracefully to whatever changes are coming at us next!!

I just cleaned off some of my bookshelves yesterday and found some old phone books from 2007 and 2008. They went to the recycle bin.
