FTC Issues Ban on Prerecorded Sales Calls

By

As of September 1, 2009 a new Federal Trade Commission rule bans prerecorded sales calls made without a consumer's written consent. This applies to calls that are answered by the consumer or by an answering machine.  The permission may be obtained electronically.

The new rule does not prohibit prerecorded messages that are strictly to provide information such as to reconfirm an appointment or a reservation. Also all prerecorded sales calls now must contain an opt out feature at the beginning of the prerecorded message.

My question is how do you report the violators?

Richard, I think some charities can still use this method to annoy us but it's a step in the right direction.

Hi Richard... Good question.  If you find out how to report the violators I would appreciate it if you would share that info!  I report do-not-call violators regularly.

Richard,

I like the ban, but hope it works better than our current ability to eliminate spam.

That's a great question, Richard...especially for the prerecorded calls that keep calling again and again and don't leave any information but a phone number...then you call the number and the outgoing message doesn't even say the company name. It's pretty ridiculous, if you ask me. I'm just glad I have YouMail to combat unwanted callers! :)

Thank you for thanking me.  I hope you are serious when you say you are going to pass it on.
