A Monument Honoring Meriwether Lewis will be unveiled and presented to Albemarle County Virginia at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 19, 2009. The public is invited to attend this ceremony in front of the Albemarle County Courthouse.
Last year on August 18, 2008, Meriwether Lewis’ 234th birthday, this great Virginian from Albemarle County was honored by placement of his bust made of white Colorado Yule marble alongside other notable Virginians in the Old Hall of the House of Delegates in the Virginia Capitol. This gift from the Lewis family and friends across America, The Locust Hill Graveyard Foundation and the Home Front Chapter of the Lewis & Clark Trail Heritage Foundation -- accepted by the Governor in a superb ceremony -- fulfilled an authorization enacted by the Virginia General Assembly on March 22, 1932.
The monument being unveiled in front of the Albemarle County Courthouse on September 19 commemorates placement of the bust in the Old Hall last year. This monument contains a bas relief of the bust in the Old Hall, a commemorative inscription, and part of a tribute to Meriwether Lewis penned by Thomas Jefferson in 1813. The monument also includes a plaque to recognize the sculptor and the major patrons who made this project possible. The monument will be permanently located in front of the Courthouse and slightly behind the Confederate memorial.
Mr. David Slutzky, Chairman of the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors, is slated to accept the monument on behalf of the County.
Charles - I've read the accounts of the Lewis and Clark journey and am amazed at their bravery and eagerness to explore uncharted territory. Of course they did some things of which we today would disapprove, but their efforts opened a new era for the U.S.
