Hurricane Floyd 10 years anniversary

All thou here in New Bern we were very fortunate and haven't experienced destruction as in other parts of eastern North Carolina we are in the middle of another hurricane season and we shouldn't ever underestimate mother nature. I just wanted to share some Hurricane Floyd facts and remind everyone to get prepared for possible storms and always have that emergency kit ready.

Hurricane Floyd Facts

In Eastern North Carolina

Total damage: More than $3 billion

Rainfall: 10 to 24 inches east of I-95

Deaths: 52

Private wells contaminated: 2,800

Lost telephone service: 65,000

Lost electricity: 1.2 million

Airports damaged: 23

Roads closed: 1,500

Downtowns submerged: 30

Businesses damaged: 60,000. $1 billion damage. $4 billion lost revenue.

Farms damaged: 32,000. $812 million damage and loss.

Homes damaged: 67,000. 17,000 destroyed.

Public shelters: 227, housing 67,000 people.

Hi Sonja,
Difficult to believe it was 10 years ago! Time does fly---our weather has been wonderful the past 2 weeks, hasn't it?

Sonja, I was surprised also to remember that 10 years have gone by. My step-mom's brother and wife lost everything in Rocky Mount because of Floyd - and even though not confirmed I believe her brother's death was somehow attributed to him being in some very nasty nasty clean up conditions for months after. That was a terrible time indeed.
