I love to host friends, and living in a resort town I'm often asked by old class mates what I'm up to this weekend? Truth be told You are welcome to visit, But I'm a Realtor, and weekends in resort property sales are the best (and sometimes only) times to show out of state prospects. So you are welcome to visit, but you may be lacking a tour guide for part of your trip.

Some of the lessons learned by having weekend guests.

Take charge of the rules...a benevolent dictator is appreciated by his subjects.

My wife and I are the cleaning crew (we don't have servants), and peace will reign when help with chores is offered, Yes, you can help. Get used to saying that, pack your own lunch if your going hiking, bring in some wood if you like fires... I'll wash if you dry is perfectly acceptable to ask family, friend or moocher alike.

Meals, are not optional if scheduled..they are mandatory...We like to make lasagna, or a casseroles..freeze them in advance then if there is a lot going on the first one home has instructions to pre-heat and open some wine.

Because I have to drop and roll at a moments notice (like I'm on fire). I like to encourage guests to be independent, I provide an alarm clock, extra cross county skis, extra bicycles, White Mountain hiking  and road maps...and leave notes in a assigned place I'm showing properties will be back around 5, have dinner ready or you will not be invited back...the Dictator.

...You are welcome to ski, boat or hike with me but if you are tired, and don't want to hike, bike or ski any more...I'll see you later. Whiners are only asked to visit once.

Life in the White Mountains is great fun...but just because your guests are off for the weekend doesn't mean you are.

When I have guests the first time- I show them the refrigerator, freezer, stove, washer and dryer and tell them to make themselves at home.  It's worked fine for years.  Thankfully though I usually have my husband home to entertain if I have to run out the door.

Tammy...My wife and I are both in real estate...different type of jobs...but busy weekends are common for both of us. I like your attitude, make yourself at home.

Hey Dictator, Your funny. That sounds fair and more than reasonable to me. Have fun. Somehow I think you always do.

I see no problem with getting the rules straight right from the beginning, make sure everyone knows their place and what is expected of them.  Sounds like you run a tight ship and that is a good thing in my book!

Steve, when you are in a business like ours, we have to have some rules.  I am lucky that my wife is retired and home almost as much as I am.

So I guess these rules have some flexibility right? If I'm old and tired you would wait on me like a good host you're just kidding.
