Got GREEN? On Demand Water Heating

Water HeaterYesterday I wrote Got Green? and I talked about how GREEN Products are for everyone.  Basically, ECO stuff helps the consumer-it just happens to help the environment at the same time.  I didn't get an overwhelming response, which didn't surprise me.  However, by the time I get some more posts in the series I believe the interest level will rise.

This post I am going to talk about Tankless Water Heaters vs. Traditional Water Heaters like the picture to the right.  I found an amazing website that I will refer to.  The product is made by Rinnai.

First I will talk about the Traditional Water Heater.  When agents and consumers look at homes and notice what looks like water damage on the ceiling we say it is probably one of two things:  Water Heater or A/C Unit.

The Traditional Water Heater:

  • Heats and Re-Heats Water ALL Day.
  • Can only heat as much as it holds
  • Then you run out
  • The pan rusts out and causes Major Water Leaks
  • Gets clogged with Hard Water
  • Needs to be replaced fairly often
  • Did I mention it constantly uses gas or electricity?

As a home owner we have to keep an eye out on many things to keep the home in good shape. The Hot Water Heater poses a problem because Water Damage can be Vewy, Vewy Bad. :)

Tankless, or On Demand Water Heaters take up virtually no space.  It is the size of an Electrical Panel.  If your home has Gas Capabilities I believe it is a better choice.  Let's Break it Down:

  • The best way for me to describe On Demand is similar to Central Heat.  The water goes over coils and heats only as you use it.
  • The water is always hot. It doesn't matter how many appliances you use or how many people take a shower
  • This in turn reduces your utility bills because the water is not constantly heated
  • This product can be on an exterior wall.  Thus not taking up precious storage space
  • There is no pan to rust out
  • Did I mention you never run out of hot water?

I believe Tankless Water Heaters are a prime example of my Got GREEN series.  They benefit YOU by reducing your utility bills, never running out of hot water and reducing your risk of water damage from worn out Traditional Water Heaters.  At the same time, it uses as much as 45% less Fossil Fuels.

Oh, I can't forget to mention the $300 Tax Credit that you would receive for using the product.  A coupon of sorts from the IRS.  It doesn't get much better than that!

I said that I would share some website links for you and now I will.  Rinnai has some amazing graphics and videos that explain the product.  Check it out and let me know what you think.  I think you will be absolutely amazed!

We're planning on getting one of these.  Only info left for me to get is to talk to one of the local providers (or, better, one of the local repairers) and find out how well they work with our very very very hard water (if I leave an inch of water in a glass overnight after drinking out of it just before bedtime, when I get up in the morning there will be white calcium precipitated out in the bottom of the glass hard water).  If it will, then we're definitely getting one.

They have those here and we have gas water heater...I'll be putting in a request to our association if that works?

Hey Tricia, the Rinnai website has local providers if you need one.  This is a GREAT product.  I highly recommend it.

Hey Sally, If you have a gas water heater you can have one.  Nothing else changes. Just the unit itself.  It costs a little more, but not enough that someone would not consider getting one. Plus, you get the IRS tax credit.

Unfortunately I just replaced my hot water tank about 4 years ago. But if I am still in the same house when I need to replace it again, I am going tankless!

Hi Debi, I replaced mine about 5 years ago.  So I don't have one either. I probably won't be in this house when I replace one, but next is definitely tankless!  Thanks for stopping by!

Stephanie~

I am tuned-in and staying. I am so happy that you are  covering the subject of  "got Green" for all of us...including good ol' land specialists like me who could learn a thing or more.

Great post.  I have experience with these and would advise the following:

  1. Interview your plumbers thoroughly.  Most don't know what to do and what not to do when presented with an installation.  Some manufacturers supply a training video - be sure to get one!
  2. Quality of the water matters. One install I'm closely aware of failed due to the condition of the water.  The burner was corrupted.  The plumber refitted the system but wasn't sure what the issue was.  Well, it happened again and the system is still out even though the homeowner had a purification system put in.  They just are a bit sick of fixing the heater.

If you do your homework and be sure the brand has a good rap and the unit is properly sized/planned/installed, it should ROCK!

Jeff, tell us more about the water issues.  What was it that made the system fail?

Stephanie,  good information I'll have to check the payback period, but believe, the tankless will still be worth it. Mine should be going in the next year or so.

Just FWIW, my understanding is that the $300 credit is good through December 31 of this year.  So we'll be putting ours in (if we choose it) before then.

Hi Gary, I am leading up to that in my series but from my understanding the payback for these are much sooner than many other products.

Tricia, I knew it wouldn't last forever.  Especially with GREEN products becoming so popular. Thanks for bringing that up!

They still aren't sure because the plumbers don't have any experience with the burner assemblies that drive this type of heater (it's a Bosch).  The consensus is metals in the water adhered to the burner plate and clogged the sensor - so the unit would not fire.

Again, I'm not poopoohing these units - I plan to getting one myself!  As with every new appliance, the pros have to get comfortable with them.

Hi Jeff, I didn't think you were knocking them.  :)  But water quality varies from home to home and I thought it was an important thing to mention.  Thanks for stopping by again!
