I have a dear friend named Denise.  Denise and I have been friends since my 20 year old was 2 and her 19 year old was 1.  Denise was transferring here from Rochester, New York and I was her agent.  We hit it off and Denise has been a part of my family ever since.  Her heart is as big as the great outdoors and her hobby is people.  She loves to collect people and her home is often the gathering place for a diverse group of people and we sit around and eat and laugh quite a bit.  Denise lost both her dog and cat this summer. Her dog, an incorrigible beagle named Buddy, left a huge whole in her heart.  He was famous for stealing anything he deemed edible that wasn't nailed down.  He once pinned Max to the floor as a toddler to steal the cookie right out of his mouth.  He had a loud, baying bark and while we all found him humorous, no one loved him as much as Denise did.

She lost her cat, a sweet black cat named Pepper, a few days before driving her only child off to college!  Pepper was extremely overweight and had very short legs.  I always said that if she had tassels on either end, she'd look like a foot stool.  She was often found laying on her back on the kitchen floor with all four feet up in the air looking like road kill!

Now that Matt, Denise's son was off to college, Max and I wanted desperately to get her a pair of kittens.  Denise agonized, she wanted to get two grown cats that no one else would want so that she could save a pair of lives.  I wanted her to have babies, so they would fill her up and make her laugh and cheer her up.

Into all of our lives came a little kitten with a white face and a striped back.  He had a little mask on his face of tabby stripes and he was adorable.  Terry, a friend of Denise, came home from a college hunting trip and heard crying in her yard.  There he was, all 6 weeks of kitten, yowling away.  She called Denise, Denise called us and another close family friend and soon a crowd had gathered over Denise's home.  Everyone picked names and I am happy to say that my name is the one that stuck.  Denise calls him Bandit.

Bandit

We took JJ over to visit Bandit the other night.  JJ's only interaction with cats is with our perpetually disgruntled, gender conflicated and quite nasty cat, Scat.  When Bandit hissed at JJ, he ran behind me!  He was actuallyy afraid of this little kitten.  Here's a picture showing you just how small Bandit is.  JJ looks like a St. Bernard next to this kitten!

JJ and Bandit

Since adopting Bandit, Denise has learned of a 5 week old smokey gray tabby in need of adoption, being cared for at the local animal hospital.  Denise has first dibs and he will be joining Bandit as early as this weekend, if possible.  Denise intends to call him Smokey!  Smokey and the Bandit!

JJ and Bandit

So, today, Thursday, 9/16/09, I am thankful for Denise and her big heart.  I am also thankful for our animal family.  They warm our hearts, they fill us up, and they make life so much more wonderful!

Bandit

Carpe Diem!

Susan, how sweet is that.  Bandit is soooo adorable.  I hope the new cats get along well. :)
I lost my friend of almost 20 years a year ago this month, and I still miss her terribly, but I'm not ready to adopt another one yet.  Every once in a while, I still find a toy ... and I still get all weepy.  After my son, I think I loved that cat the most.

Hi Neal!  We will be friends as long as we are both here!

Sylvie, I know exactly how you feel.  I love my dog beyond all reason and I even love my miserable cat!  You should treat your heart to a new kitten.  It really is what the doctor ordered!

Ahh...there you are! I read this slowly and laughed so hard at your descriptions of Pepper looking like a footstool and I always crack up at the irascible antics of your cat Scat! Bandit is already getting the wrong idea of his effect on a dog?!?!? Buddy too sounds like he was a terror of sorts and reminds me of a friends dog who was always ranging far and wide in the neighborhood!  I guess that all of us that have kids away at school are a bit more vulnerable than most and the loss of your friends pets was painful to read about. Thank you for another excellent and compassionate post!

What a precious friendship and ending of this story, after the sadness of summertime. I just read Gary's post on the constancy of change, and this seems to continue the thread. That sweetest little kitten and JJ's visit(s) bring such healing to these times in our lives.  Hugs to you and your friend.

Awwwwww, what a cute ittle bitty kitty.  I have three myself currently and all were rescues two as babies.  That cat is so pretty and sweet looking.  And JJ does look kinda big, I can't imagine that kitten next to my Great Dane.

Susan:  What a sweet and absolutely wonderful kitty-cat story.  I just smiled and smiled as I read it... and at the end had tears that needed to be wiped so I could finish the story.  How great is this !  Smokey and the Bandit.  I just LOVE it.  Thanks for sharing... I really need this warm fuzzy before going sleepie-pie tonight.  Gentle Huggs... Take care...

I am also wondering... .  Please tell the story of your "gender conflicted" cat Scat.  You've got my curiosity piqued.

Susan - and how much kismet was there in that lost tabby showing up just when it did? Very nice story about lemons in life becoming lemonade. Thanks.

Hi Russell!  I love you... not sure if I've told you that before.  xxoo

Hello Loreena!  I love JJ too!

Richard, Peyton is a beauty!!  I love this picture.

Mara, Denise did have a very rough summer and she is one of most tender hearted friends.  Thanks for the hug.  It is reciprocated.

Gary, I got a call from Denise last night.  Smokey is not quite ready to come home because Bandit still has something called Toxidia.  May be a week or two more.

Rita, thanks!

Hi my favorite British Agent!  I love that picture of JJ and Bandit.  They were both looking at Max when I snapped that picture!

Carole, it is so hard to lose a beloved pet.  xxoo

Tammy, JJ is only 20 pounds so that kitten will look like a mouse next to your great dane!!

Karen Anne, my cat scat is so nasty that I have just about run through all of the teens in the neighborhood!  No one will watch her when I am on vacation!  One teen brought his dad AND a tennis racket in with him because she is so big and nasty.  She's about 17 pounds of pure ire and has way too much testosterone for a female!  When we went to Disney a dad called me to make sure she had her rabies shots because she bit his teen-aged daughter!

I'm glad you liked Bandit's story.  It proves that good things happen for good people.  xxoo

Mike, I was thinking the same thing.  I'm listening to a Abraham Hicks CD and she talks about "ask and it is given".  When the kitten showed up, just like that, after Max and I talked about surprising Denise with two kittens, that's the first thing I thought of.  xxoo

I can't imagine losing two of your babies at the same time, then sending another one away to college... I have no doubt that Bandit and Smokey will keep Denise busy... and happy!

Hi Susan, I always love your Thankful Thursdays - such a heartwarming story about friendship, the loss of a pet, and they way life has a funny way of bringing us just what we need at the right time.  Great photos, Bandit is just as cute as can be, and of course we all know that JJ is too!

Hi Jesse Darlin'!  My friend Denise just informed me that she moved from Massachusetts and that her cat was not extremely overweight!   She also slammed me for not remembering she came from my beloved Kennedy and Kerry's home state!  I sit corrected on her previous home... my 50 year old brain is like a spaghetti strainer these days.  But I stand by the overweight cat comment.  I told her that cat was too darn short to be called big boned!  xxoo

Mary!  I love this new pictures.  What a beautiful woman you are!  Thank you! xxoo
