I love bird watching, and perhaps the most fun is watching birds in my birdbaths.  However, as you know, sometimes they can get a little "funky" and dirty.  Here are some great tips to keep your bird baths clean all season long:

--Use a scrub brush to clean away any debris.  Or, if you have a power washer, this is a great time to use it!

--Some folks use bleach when the grime is too difficult to remove.  If you do use bleach, rinse well several times and let birdbath dry out in the sun for the day.

--A cup of vinegar is also useful in cleaning the birdbath...let stand for about 20 minutes, or longer depending on the amount of buildup/grime, and then thoroughly rinse.

--Make sure to rinse and refill your bird bath daily if possible, or every other day, to keep them clean.

--Probably the best tip....throw a couple copper pennies in the bird bath.  This works so well!  Or, a piece of copper pipe works great too.  You will not believe how this keeps the buildup away.

Now, sit back and enjoy the activities in and surrounding your clean birdbath!!

Ty, you must try it ...I was a bit skeptical, but it has been about 1 month and mine is still clean!!!  Of course, I rinse it out every other day, but that is it!

Interesting. I guess if you are maintaining it as you describe there should be no mosquitoes either.

Gary, there are bits and pieces of "all sorts of good stuff" in the bath each day, but I flip it and rinse/refill and it is a breeze!!! I also like having clean water for the squirrels too!

I like watching all the birds too. Unfortunately, due to the cat population at my back yard, I do not feed or bath the birds. It would be like trapping them.

Steven, I understand where you are coming from....do you care for the cats?  Or are they feral?  Have you trapped and spayed/neutered them?

Great tip about the pennies in the brdbath. I always learn new things from your blog. I too have a couple of rocks in my birdbath so the little guys have a dry perch in the bath.

;)

Thanks for the penny tip - my bird bath is gross right now because my husband hasn't dragged out the power washer lately.  I'll try the vinegar first then add the pennies.  But it's strange - no birds actually use it even though it's on the deck and away from trees.

Margaret....I would think no birds use it bc you said it was gross!  :-)  Try cleaning it and you might be surprised!

Kristin

Thank you for the advice I have never heard of putting copper in the bird bath.  We always keep fresh water and the feeder topped up as we love to watch the birds especially when they take a bath they are so funny.

Best wishes

Sharon

I had no idea you even needed to do anything other than let the rainwater fill a bird bath.

And now I know.

Thanks for the tips and advice on keeping our winged friends happy!
