Have you heard that old saying before?  Probably more times than you care to remember.

Fishermen say it all the time.  "The Big one got away!"  They always stretch out their arms and probably exaggerate a bit.  What do you think?

Today I found myself in much the same situation.  Only not a fish but a FALLOW DEER,

a WHITE FALLOW  BUCK with a rack bigger than any I've ever seen.

                                                                           Light brown spotted

While driving down a country road I spotted him.  I struggled to get the camera and turned around and went back to the clearing.  Slowly approaching, he was watching me.  He was hiding behind a cedar tree. I creeped up but as soon as the camera was in place, he took off.  Not far but too far for the camera to pick up good.  Between the branches, what a sight to see!  So close and yet so far.

There was a doe with him.  She was light brown and white spotted.  In another clearing just a little way off, there was another white doe.  The white buck was spectacular though.  They are rare and not  in many places in the United States.  Central Georgia, California and the Texas Hill Country are their homes on this continent.  They live all over Europe and Asia but are not plentiful, especially the white ones.

If you are visiting the Texas Hill Country, always bring your camera.  You never know what you will see in these parts.  You'll have to be quick though or they will get away!

Ricki...

I don't think that I have ever seen one of these deer. How cool is that?

Hi Richard,  They are very cool!  The first time I saw one in the wild, I couldn't believe it because they were solid white.  I thought they were albino but then I learned differently. Very cool!

Hi Edward,  You'd think that but it is real.  Did you click on the link?  Check out all the photos there. Lots of photos.

Hi Ricki... this pic reminds me of when I first moved to Texas from up north.  My colleagues decided to have some fun with the new guy and started telling me about jackalopes.  Ever since then, I am very reluctant to buy into things that look improbable.  Does this deer really exist?

Ricki,

At first glance I also thought the photo had been altered.  I have never seen a deer like this before.

Fascinating.  I've never spotted any of the Fallow Deer in MD or Va.  I know they are abundant in Ohio so I imagine they range around here too.

Maybe some day

Great photo

Ricki what a great photograph;  just waiting for you to come along with your camera. We both know why we enjoy living in The Texas Hill Country, too many reasons to mention but one is the wildlife in its natural habitat for us to enjoy watching.

Hi Trey,   Yes, have it ready all the time.

Hi Steve,  Yes, I've seen a few jackalopes in my day but this deer is really real.  Click on the link and see the other photos.

Hi Dale,  A white moose, how grand!  That would be a sight to see!

Hi Richard,  That photo does look altered but it is not. Did you click on the lilnk and see the others?

Hi Lenn,  They are special, hope you see one in the wild someday.

Hi Carl & Ceil,  Yes, living in the Hill Country is so much fun b/c you never know when or where you will see some spectacular wildlife. Sometimes in your own backyard or downtown! :)

How cool is he?! Like a fawn on the bottom and a big daddy buck on top. Thanks for the photo, Ricki--I never knew they lived in Texas.

Cheers,

Robin
