A pelican lights on a lake in Tucson, Arizona (of all places!)

A pelican in Tucson, Arizona?

I was shooting a video with REALTOR Kevin Wood, Realty Execs just down the street.  Sitting at the kitchen table with the Flip Video camera, I was asking Kevin about the home he had just listed.

"Just down the street, there's a lake" he said.  I had to see for myself.  What I saw took my mind back to my high school english days, with the poet Ogden Nash.

A wonderful bird is the Pelican.

His beak can hold more than his belican.

He can hold in his beak

Enough food for a week,

But I'm darned if I know how the helican.

A lake in the middle of Tucson, Arizona. Go figure~

I haven't heard that poem in a long time - since I was a kid, and my brother told me he wrote it.  He said he could make up stuff on the spot, the helican.

I've found the pelican hangouts here in San Diego. Finally! There are three of them, two of which are accessible to walkers. They are probably my third favorite bird behind flamingos and hummingbirds. I also found three baby pelicans at the Wild Animal Park last week, so of course I had to do a blog on them over at my home inspection blog.

You certainly tied that all together very well!  That's a very pretty lake shot with the mountain background that you've taken!

Judi,

Thanks!  The 3 BR/2 BA home is just 4/10ths of a mile down the street from the location where I snapped this photo, and it's only $119,000.

Don,

You're welcome!

Mike,

It's just FUN!

Laura,

The lake is stocked with fish, and that pelican appreciates it.

Carolin,

Me neither...

Debra,

That's good!  I love Nash.

VB,

Thanks for stopping by to say so!

Russel,

Feel free to edit in a live link so we can check out the baby pelicans.

Virginia,

Thanks for being the first to comment.  LOL

Hi Mike, I never heard that poem before and I love it!  We only occasionally see white pelicans here during migration.  Ours are the brown variety and they always come over when my husbands returns from his fishing trips. They know where the food is!

My Dad used to love the pelicans when he lived in Florida. They always know where the good fish are. Didn't realize they lived in AZ too.

Susie,

Me neither!

Silvia,

This is the first white pelican I've seen ~ ever!

Larry,

One of the snowbirds must have met him on Facebook, and invited him to Arizona.

Mike - I would never have thought pelicans to be in Arizona!  One doesn't equate water birds with the desert.  :)  Thanks for sharing - now I will never think of the desert in quite the same way.  But then ... you've been steadily changing my mind about it anyway!

Would never have expected a pelican in Arizona.  Of course, have always wondered how you see sea gulls so far from the ocean at times too.

Mike,  can you give us the address of the property?

My mom recited that poem a few times when I was a kid.

Too funny. I was trying to take of picture of an egret at Tucson Nat'l on Friday. There are a lot of "exotic" birds out here. To me, the coolest is the "Harris" hawk. I was walking the course several years back and happened upon several of these hawks about 15 feet away. They were feeding on a dove. They did not back off at all. I was really surprised.

Nice pic....

Hey Mike - I grew on a lake in MN that had tons of pelicans so this brought me right back home.  Loved it!

Uncle Mike,

How did I know there would be a post about the lake this weekend? You can't pass up a photo op if you had to. You're a great photographer, storyteller, and friend. God bless you UM.

GOOD MORNING MIKE!  I am stumped -- I have this lake narrowed down to two neighborhoods here in Tucson (based on the price!) But I haven't seen pelicans at one of them!   Help!  Where is it?!  -- Gabrielle

Mike: Funny poem but that first picture is so vibrant.  Was that with your Flip?  I don't think mine has ever gotten a picture like that with such clarity.

Kid brother,

Thanks for stopping by.  We had a great day yesterday.

Donna,

No, I took the photo with my Panasonic Lumix.  Cheap at Costco--$225-$250.

Gabrielle,

South on Pantano, and then east on Stella.  I'd never seen it either.

Robin,

I'm glad you like it!~Thanks for commenting.

Anne,

I'd never seen it.  I'm glad you know where it is.

Kevin,

Thanks.  Now to get the video done...

Anna,

I like to make people smile.  Glad you did.

Patrick,

Hawks on prey are pretty agressive.  One in my back yard allowed me within fifteen feet before it took off with it's meal (a dove.)

Cheryl,

I'll get it for you.

Kim & Carol,

It's the first pelican I've ever seen here in Tucson.  Surprised me, too!

What a beautiful photo!  The colors are so sharp!  My nephew once tossed a fish to a pelican and nearly choked it to death because the fish he tossed was dead and stiff as a board.  That poor bird.

I had to go on a pelican searching expedition with my marketing guru a couple of weeks ago. I think we've found the three spots -- excluding the Wild Animal Park - where the pelicans hang out here. They are clumsy-looking birds, but I guess they get the job done.

I don't remember when, but back when I lived in Tucson there were pelicans.  Someone claimed they blew in with a storm.  I don't remember much else since it had to be more than 26 years ago.  Seems like it was in the newspaper.  ????  Now I want to know.

Doreen,

It's a great photo considering the subject matter is in Tucson!  LOL

Jim,

We were watching America's Funniest Home Videos yesterday; a woman was offering food to a pelican, and it grabbed her whole arm in it's mouth!  (Much to the surprise and consternation of the woman, not to mention the pelican.)
