EducationSo I just had the honor to train two new Interior Stylists this week - The biggest bonus is that I'm taught by them too.

Both of my students came from fabulous Graphic & Art Design/branding backgrounds, so when it came to the Marketing portion of the training, we had a lot to share.

An Aha moment came to me when discussing Websites - It was a very interesting discussion...

As we all know, it is natural for those interested in this industry to GOOGLE about - Looking at sites and taking a personal look at those in the industry.  The interesting conclusion for both students was that we Stagers/Re-designers spend a lot of time creating novelettes on our sites - Especially when it's about ourselves.

Almost in unison they spoke about how on our sites the story consistently unfolds that from childhood forward, we've had a vested interest in furniture rearrangement and Barbie Dream Home design.  While that is all good for speaking for the obvious passion for our skill, no one really wants to spend a half hour reading about our life from toddler on up.

We live in a time of Tweets and text messages, and just like our home staging; you've got around 5-10 seconds to make a 1st impression. So why is it that when we ply our trade, we're aware of the short attention span our consumers, but when it comes to our sites, not so much?

Makes me wonder how much shorter attention spans can get!?

Julea ~ that's why our websites should have an "about us" page so that people can choose to read about the stager's background -- or not.  I feel that Page One is the most important page to showcase what we can do to help our potential clients....leave the stuff about us on a later page.  Good point!

I'm a fan of K.I.S.S. Julea and agree when speaking it's a great way to let others get to know you, when online, I just want to get what I need - fast!

I agree, simply is always best-just like in staging a home! I believe in keeping photos to a minimum too. No one wants to spend too much time looking at your too many photos and they don't want to read about boring bragging material either. Great post Julea.

Great insight on the students part! I really don't like music when I go to a website. If it has sound, I will turn it down immediately or I'll click off the page.

So true! I am not opposed to having some personal highlights, but think it is a good idea to designate it to one area. (highlights - not life story) :) Keep your website info short and sweet while still providing the info they are looking for quickly. That is how I navigate through websites and it sounds like others have a similar pattern.

The other issue they brought up is how we define our services. I've too noticed that - I've read vitual replays on every step and minut point of how to do a interior makeover.

Good feedback -- I remember somewhere in my past here on AR I blogged about all the staging stories about "when growing up . . . rearangimg my mom's house . . . helping friends . . .etc." I think it's a turn off. I mean really . . . If you were a beautician would you start your Web site out by saying "when growing up I was always cutting my friends and families hair and stlying my Barbie to be the prettiest in the neighborhood?" Thanks for sharing this Julea.

Interesting post Julea, When I first built my website everyone said "you have to have a bio page." I did briefly, wasn't comfortable with it and took it down. I thought no one cares about that stuff they want to know what you do... see how well you do it and in as little time as possible. All the other stuff comes with customer contact and their questions.
