Shoveling in September in Ham Lake, Minnesota? It’s NUTS !

Literally! Nuts...Acorns to be specific. It's a banner year for the oak trees in our yard! Unfortunately several of the branches that provide shade on our Ham Lake driveway in the summer, drop hundreds thousands o Shovels of Acorns by Teri Eckholm Realtor f acorns onto our asphalt. We thought that collecting them and bringing bushels of our red and bir acorns to the DNR was a novel idea, but a 3 hour drive to Bemidji for a possible $40 a bushel is not going to happen.

So we elected to shovel the nuts after they ping like hail stones onto our vehicles. We have blown them off the driveway in the past but it doesn't get all the acorn-butter bits that our tires have ground in during the week. Believe me, shoveling is easier than sweeping. After they are dumped onto the edge of our property, the squirrel and white-tailed deer get a one-stop smorgasbord as usually we have a few crabapples in the mix.

What fun it is to live on Minnesota acreage!

You made me laugh with this post. I have famly and friends who live on large properties, away from the city, and they have beautiful trees all over their property ... and this is exactly what they go through every year ... sometimes they can't even park their cars in the driveway, for fear of the damage. It is pretty, though. :)

I'm in the midst of an acorn deluge here in Tennessee as well. Both the house and the horse shelter have metal roofs but the shelter is not insulated so the acorns falling onto it are SO LOUD. The horses were frightened at first but we're all used to it now.

Got me with the title. The nuts are messy, but there is nothing like the sturdy oak.

What a great idea to shovel them to the side for the squirrels and deers to enjoy (and perhaps hoard) before the winter hits.

That's hilarious! We were up near Mille Lacs last weekend and listened as the acorns pelted a steady stream on the ground and our vehicles. When inside, it sounded like a rain storm at times! In the middle of the woods (where we were) it was no mess to clean up. I guess it would be tricky to keep it clean in residential areas! Sounds like you just got a head start on training your back for the shovel!

Sylvie--So happy my story made you smile...We have to laugh too as there are even more today!

Leslie--Can only imagine how loud it would be on a tin roof to have acorns bouncing off the top...I suppose you can get used to anything. :)

Mike--Great title eh?! lol Only two things seem to take down the majestic old oaks: lightening and oak wilt.

Kris--No letting the food go to waste! The wild turkeys were fighting over them on our patio yesterday...boy were they loud!

Theresa--We have someone plow our driveway when it snows...the shovel is mostly used for the nuts!
