Detroit Lake is located 59 miles east of Salem, Oregon on hwy 22, and what an experience it is! The lake is a man made lake that was made when they constructed the Detroit Dam to help prevent flooding from runoff.
This area features Camping, Hiking, Boating and my personal favorite, fishing. The lake is open year round and has some great tasting trout in it. I can say this because I was there today and my dinner consisted of 5 of the tastiest trout I have ever had in my life! Yes, for the first time in my life, I went out fishing and caught my limit!
The area is beautiful year round and you can see all kinds of wildlife. Last time my best friend (My dad) and I went, we saw an otter playing just off the shore from where we were standing on the dam fishing.
Flying above we are always seeing osprey and other birds of prey. Today we say a bald eagle, and what an amazing bird to watch fly! You just don't realize how big they are until you see them up close to a crow and realize a crow looks like a sparrow next to it.
Here are two pictures of the eagle we say today. The first is the one with the two crows flying around it and the second is the eagle just soaring free. I'm really glad we chose the eagle to be our national bird instead of the turkey. In case you didn't know the turkey was almost our national bird thanks to Ben Franklin's sick sense of humor.

If you are looking for a beautiful place to take your family for a great camping trip or just for a place to go fishing for the day, I suggest you check out Detroit Lake, you won't be disappointed.
