My owner is a Realtor with Century 21 Award in Mission ValleyIf you've ever had to fly your pets on a commercial airline, you'll appreciate this.

The first flight for Pet Airways, the nation's first pets-only airline, recently took off from Republic Airport in Farmingdale, New York. Pet Airways is the brainchild of Alysa Binder and Dan Wiesel after they had to ship their Jack Russell terrier in a plane's cargo hold. Commercial airlines usually allow a limited number of small pets to fly in the cabin, but it's first come, first served. Other pets either travel as checked baggage or in the cargo hold. Both the luggage hold and the cargo hold are dark and noisy, and temperatures can vary wildly.

Pet AirwaysPet Airways has been in the works since 2005, but buying a fleet of five planes, setting up airport schedules, and, of course, dealing with federal regulations took four years. There's a shocker.

Pet Airways will fly pets between New York, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., with a one-way fare of $250. There is room for about 50 pets per flight, and flights are booked solid for the next two months.

And just what do you get for $250? Service! Get this: Dogs and cats will fly in the main cabin of a plane that has been lined with carriers instead of seats. Pets are escorted to the plane by attendants who check on them every 15 minutes during flight. Pet AirwaysThey (the pets, not the attendants) get pre-boarding walks and restroom breaks, and special pet lounges have been created at the five airports for pets that want "to wait and sniff before flights." Hey, I quoted that, so don't blame it on me.

The planes are smaller freight planes, so they don't have the fuel load to make coast-to-coast flights, so factoring in stops will result in a New York to Los Angeles flight taking about 24 hours, with a major stop in Chicago for a restroom break, playtime, dinner, and an overnight bunk.

Pet Airways representatives (Binder and Wiesel, in other words) say that they plan to add more flights and cities soon, working up to about 25 cities within the next three years.

Of course, there is always a nay-sayer out there for something new and innovative. Anne Banas, executive editor of Smarter-Travel.com, "questions the viability of an airline with such a specific niche." I suspect that Ms. Anne Banas doesn't have a cat or dog, nor any other pet for that matter.

Hi Jim - This is great news!  I have only had to fly a pet a couple of times, but it was terrifying and traumatic for both the pet and me!  This seems like a great solution to a big problem that some non-pet owners may not realize.

I saw this on the news and thought yea finally someone gets it.  Hopefull the fact that they are booked means they will be able to stay in the air.  My daughter will be flying home from the UK soon with her two kitties and we are keeping our fingers crossed that she can get them in the cabin and not have to put them in the cargo hold.

Hi Jim, funny you should post about this. My client's son-in-law flies for them. Very cool concept, it's about time!

Great idea. To some people, their pets are more than pets, they are family.

What a great idea! I have had to fly with kitties a number of times, and became expert at telling the airline reps what their rules actually were. For example, United won't allow you to buy a seat for a pet, and you can only put one adult pet under the seat in front of you... but they don't have a problem with you buying an extra seat for yourself ("Extra Seat Shay") and putting your second pet under the extra seat. It is not buying a seat for the pet, though (!).  Good for Pet Airways, and what a small world that Andrea has that connection, too.

What a great idea!  I had not heard of this.  My 3 cats have started planning their vacation already.  :-)

Jim - that is a great concept and I had not heard of it. In the past I have flown my dog - and he barked the whole time. I am not a fan of putting the animals in the cargo hold.

Hey, Jim. I hope that their food is better than what we get. LOL, Jim

D'oh! I wish I'd thought of that. I am not surprised they are already booked up in advance.

Thanks for this, Jim--I will let Miles and Kitty know about it.

Hi Jim, I think it's a great idea.  Once I flew with a new puppy from Florida to Texas, luckily he fit under the seat.  Twice, we flew two dogs across the Atlantic to England and back a year later, a much greater ordeal for everyone involved as there was not other choice but the cargo hold.  The biggest thing is to give the pets an opportunity to do their business.  I think this airline is smart to explore this niche.

Interesting!  Luckily my pets haven't had much cause to fly, but I can imagine little Max is plotting a vacation right now.... What's that, son? You say Max just bit my wallet and is heading for the airport?

It'll be neat to see how they do!

Thanks for sharing this with us, Jim.  I had heard about it but never had the chance to read any detals about it.  I wondered what the price might be, and you answered that as well.  Very interesting post.

Isn't that totally awesome Jim?  I read about that a couple of months ago.  I hope they are a success!  I wouldnt ship my dog in cargo for a million dollars.  what a nightmare that must be for the animals.  BUT PetAirways, absolutely!

Hey, Folks - I've been fortunate that the farthest I've ever had to take a pet is a few miles to the vet, but many times that was an adventure in and of itse.f If taking one's pet all the way across the country is any worse than that, then I'm all for Pet Airways. I'd love to be one of the flight attendants. Hmmmmmm. I wonder if they have any openings. Then again, I'd probably have to move from San Diego. We're not exactly an international hubbub for airline flights. I might also have to look up their definition of "pet." I'm not sure I would want to walk a snake or a lizard up the ramp to the airplane, or any of many other so-called pets. Dogs and cats are okay.
