It seems that everywhere you turn lately you are hearing buzz words like Social Media, Web 2.0, and the latest buzz word, "New Media."  You hear experts debate the best way to use twitter and facebook to increase your business.  Tweets from celebrities like Oprah & Shaq are posted all over the news and discussed by millions.  All of this buzz and hype have people seeking more information on how to use these two services to generate business.

But, one of the other types of social media and in my opinion the most effective avenue is being pushed to the wayside.  The amount of hype that you hear about writing blogs and using one for business seems to becoming a dying breed and lost art form.  That being said, I decided that it was time for me to do some research to see if blogs really were losing steam and becoming an ineffective means or if the "gurus" were just omitting an important component to any social media strategy.

The first thing I wanted to see is what is driving traffic to ActiveRain. Are search engines still what brings people to your site, or are they finding your sites through other social media means like Facebook & twitter. Over 75% of the traffic Came from search engines.  On the other hand, the two social media giants, Facebook and Twitter are only accountable for 1.65% of web traffic.  Seeing this, was a major shock to me.  I thought for sure that both would be in the top 10 and probably bring somewhere from 12-15% of our traffic. In retrospect, if you remember my post about the importance of labeling images, we learned at that time that 3.65% of our traffic comes from image searches.  That is more than double two social media giants!

Austin Relocation PackageSince it seems like social media is not great for directing traffic, I next decided I would see how a blog ranks in comparison to regular websites.  Whenever I ask someone if they use a blog on a regular basis, the top objection/reason they say is "they already have a web site that gives them an Internet presence.

I started doing some typical searches that a consumer would do to see which show up higher in the rankings.  My first keyword I did a search for was Austin Relocation Package.  The #1 result out of over 600,000 for that term was a blog by member Jason Crouch that he wrote in March 2008.  What was even more interesting was that Jason's website, only ranked #6.

Next, I decided to do a search for a community that Virginia Hepp, another member markets on both her blog and also on her website called Copper Bluffs in Mesquite Nevada. The Results were astounding!  Virginia's ActiveRain, Localism, and Outside Blog captured places 1-6 while her personal website showed up in the results at #8.  If you don't believe me, take a look at this search for Copper Bluffs Mesquite Nevada Real Estate.

As I continued to do searches, this seemed to be the recurring theme.  Blogs consistently outranked personal websites on just about any and every search term I used.  This leads me to the conclusion that if someone is just using a website and has no active blog that they are updating on a regular basis that they are missing out a major chunk of potential business.

The third test that I used was to check activity from and whether it has decreased over the past few months as Twitter and Facebook have grown.

A few months ago I wrote a post titled: 40,000 Visitors To Your Rainmaker Account in Just 25 Days!  This post shows how over a one month period of time I wrote 25 posts that garnered well over 40,000 visitors to my blog.  I also went on to share in that post how the best performance I ever had on my regular website was just over 3,000 hits.  My blog had more than 13 times the amount of traffic!  Since this was written several months ago, I decided that I would run the numbers again to see if my blog is decreasing in traffic since other social media sources are gaining such popularity.

For the last 25 posts, the total number of visits is 47,881 in comparison to the 40,699.  This averages out to a 6% increase or almost 300 more clicks per post.  This would lead me to believe that instead of my blog losing traction to other social media realms, it is actually gaining popularity over the past 5 months and becoming a stronger tool in social media arsenal.

So in closing I ask this question to you, Are blogs a technology of the past and something you should not focus on any more?  From the research I have done, I do not believe that statement to be true.  In fact, I believe the opposite.  Your blog is something that needs to be the main component to your social media strategy that you should focus on. What do you think?

I think that some agents want blogging to go away because they can't handle the pressure of posting. Not every one can sit down and write a blog post but if you can you will be rewarded.

Jeremy, I think that there is value for the consumer in a well written informative blog and that's why they work, I just did a post about the local Realtor tour and I'm watching the number of clicks climb, it's the most popular one I've done yet. Nowhere near the sort of numbers you get though.

Jeremy, My guess is that most people blog because they like it. The business that comes from it is a plus. I do searches on Google everyday and have NEVER come across a tweet or a facebook page in my results. Until this changes blogging will continue to be a far better way to get business.

This is very interesting. Sure Facebook & Twitter are getting most of the attention these days pot as you have proven blogs are still the way to go. We attented a training session with Ben Kinney a few weeks ago here in Ottawa about Social Media and we need to be part of that as well but blogging on Active Rain is just as important if not more. I have just increased my blogging again and it still works. Thank you for the post, it just re-affirms what we need to do.

Jeremy, if you remember the panel discussion at the end of ReTechSouth, everyone of us on the panel said we get business from our blogs. It is the hub of everything else we do.

When I do my stat's it is true many people go to my blogs from the social networks as the launch pad, but if I didn't have the blog then the traffic would not be there.

Jeremy - I think it goes without saying that the blog is a key element in any social media strategy.  Sure Twitter, Facebook, etc. are the hot buzzwords, but without the huge issue of searchability and ranking, they're not worth nearly as much as a blog.  I like Bryant's point that most people that do it, do it because they like it - the business is a plus.  Ask just about any regular blogger and they'll probably tell you they enjoy it.  I know I do.

6:44am • #24

Hey Lenn-  Thanks for reblogging!  Also, I like you point about how a blog gives you PULL.  Great stuff!

Paddy- I agree.  Blogging needs to be your home base.  Incorporate in some of the other tools to create connections, but the blog gives the information while the others gives relationships.  At least from what I have seen.

Fernando- Your blog is outranking your regular website because every time you write a new post, the search engines are coming back and re-indexing your blog for new content.  Because they are constantly doing that, they will rank that site higher because it is constantly being updated with fresh stuff.  Websites on the other hand do not get that same amount of attention on updating so they aren't crawled as often by the search engines.

Broker Bryant- the only place I have seen my facebook or twitter stuff show up when doing a search is for my name.  Since FB is like a pagerank of 1 million it seems, it shows up #1.  Twitter shows up anywhere from #2-8.  But what is very interesting is that both of these sites can go from that top to bottom of page like a yo-yo depending on how often I update them. For twitter to stay towards the top, I need to do at least 50-60 updates a day it seems.  If I don't it drops as fast as the first hill of a roller coaster.  The same holds true for FB.

Hey Missy- I do remember that conversation now that you mentioned that.  Thanks for reminding me!

I think blogs are the way to go. I mean websites these days are so static and have all of the same info on them. A blog really shows your personality, and can give a potential client a better picture of who you are as a person, and as a professional as well. I do find the numbers astonishing about the search engine traffic vs. social media. My blog is relatively new, and I am constantly searching for ways to make it better and more appealing(gotta start somewhere!) However, most of my traffic has come from twitter, facebook, and linked in. I have my twitter feed available on my various sites, and always post a short URL on my feed that points back to a posting on my blog. When I search my Wordpress stats, users are coming from these sites. For someone just starting out with a blog, i'd highly recommend using twitter in combination with other social media sites to begin to build your audience.

Hi Jeremy -- Thanks for writing this post.  Because so many AR members have dedicated an enormous amount of time and effort in creating a strong presence via the AR blogging platform, it would be nice if AR could run these stats once a month (or quarterly) and produce a grid/list or chart showing this information so it can be easily tracked over time.

Very interesting post. I'd prefer to keep Facebook separate from my business -- I want it to be a way that I connect with people in my life in a real way, not just to update them on my real estate activities. Blogging does get more pertinent real estate information out for people who are looking for it. I'd be just as happy though, if more agents in my market gave up blogging for Facebook and Twitter. :)

That is very interesting. I am getting a lot of hits on my blogs according to the statistics from Active Rain.  I haven't had a direct lead from my blog but I did have a lead yesterday from an open house I hosted in July.  This man had been to several open houses that day. I know he probably talked to the agents at other open houses.  When he contacted by email me and said, "I want you to be my buyers agent."  I had suggested he go to my website and read my blog. I post some blogs on both Active Rain and on buywilliamsburghomes.com.  Last night on the telephone he said that he read my blog on foreclosures and was not interested in looking at them based on a blog that I had posted about foreclosures!

David- Linking back in your posts is definitely going to help your ranking.  Just make sure you are using it in your posts and not in comments because first off, there are <no follow> tags attached that means the search engines are not going to find the link.  Also, it will upset the author sometimes because they feel you are trying to steal their business and direct them away from their original post to your blog.

Jeremy... sorry that I am so late to the party... I love those gurus that proclaim web 2.0 and how Twitter and Facebook will be the only means or the best types of getting business to you.  I have disagreed with this exactly a year ago, when this started to take off. I took a stab at that comment, based on one thing and one thing only.  Common sense.  I saw how facebook and Twitter were just a means of communication.... but that you still had to have something to share and not a quick 140 character tweet... or gaining tons of friends on Facebook or tons of followers on Twitter... and just spamming them with info to follow you...  I find substance in what I read or write, informational pieces...  such as a blog, full of information.

Overall, I agree... and if you write a well-written blog, that is of quality, good reliable information, with key words... you will be searched first on the net...   sure, you can be a star or a celebrity, and have many followers that either blush at every word or cringe at every word... yet they follow you, because they want to be kept up to the minute of status.. or the so-called rumors... or anything else that you have to say.  But can they find that by searching on the net?  Nope... and twitter... in my opinion, it's more of now, a time stamp of now....  a blog, if searched properly and or has the correct key words and is well written, can be found years later.  Again, some great information .... information that I kind of thought the same, even when this become a fad of the future...  thanks

Active Rain does such a good job with SEO that it makes blogging even that much more valuable than even just a year ago.

I do have to admit that I blog a little less, now that I have gotten my head around Twitter, but I would consider that more 'thought journalism' and blogging is more of actual 'journalism'.  A lot of times I am talking about things on Twitter that wouldn't make for interesting blog posts.

Really the two go hand in hand.  Blogging is central to a social media plan and then the other stuff can be used for broadcasting and communication.

The examples and screen shot you included do a great job backing your point.

"Our blog posts- our blogs are the motherships.  They are the home base of our online presence where we can establish our reputation, demonstrate our expertise and act as a living, breathing resume.  Morgan Brown wrote a great post about blogs and why they matter.  It was one of the best I have seen written.  Blogs still have a huge relevance and huge value.  Social media is the “who you know”.  Blogs are the “what you know”.  If you don’t demonstrate “what you know”, at some point “who you know” will get bored. "

Blogging is not passe.  It is tough, tiring, and time consuming.  Some people want it to go away because it is not easy.  It takes dedication and consistency that is difficult but the rewards are huge.  As i just tweeted, when other people are abandoning blogs for easier social media outlets- embrace yours & jump ahead. Blogs are the mothership!

Jeremy I don't know if blogs are dying with our short attention spans but a little more words helps out in explaining a subject.

Jeremy,

Even if I hadn't read this great post, I'd still be blogging. Happy to report that the contacts are starting to pour in.  In the last 7 days, I have 4 new prospects straight from my Outside Blog. Not Jason or Virginia, but for a newbie in a very rural area, this is HUGE! I'm doing great with Google juice - and I learned it all in the 'Rain.

Jeremy,

I'm glad that you have the statistics to prove the worth of the blogs. I have over 100 individual blogs that will rank #1 on Google on 3 word search terms.

The same articles published on my website will not show up within the first 5 pages (if at all). Like evryone else, I just give up after a few pages, so I really dont have meaningful comparisons.

Thanks also for the research Jeremy.  Like so many others, my blog posts are higher ranked and more often ranked than my website.  What seems so obvious is you can blog on many, many, topics, and get a ranking with near all of them (if they are different enough) - but that is not practical with a website.

Jeremy, I haven't done any research but it is obvious to me that blogging gets results for me.  Blogging has caused my phone to ring, and for me results are the bottom line.

Are blogs a technology of the past and something you should not focus on any more?

Thanks for the fascinating research.  Right now I think a good blog is more important than ever!

While I agree with your conclusion, I don't think your methodology works.  Looking at web traffic HAS to show that a blog is winning, but are we connecting more with a blog post or with social media?  Of course, that owuld be tougher to measure...

9:22pm • #101

Ginger- Social media is the “who you know”.  Blogs are the “what you know”.  If you don’t demonstrate “what you know”, at some point “who you know” will get bored. "  OOOH!  I like that!  I will have to remember that for the future!

Irene- WOW that is some awesome results you are starting to receive!  Keep up the great work!  Remember, we've only just begun!

Brian- You are not the only one that I have heard say that while their blog is on page 1 their website cannot be found!  When I was actively selling real estate, my blog was hovering around the top of page 2 for the major keywords for my area while my website was not found.  After I went through page 28, I finally gave up!

Jason- over 25,000?  WOWWOW!

Patricia- Thanks!  It is actually a pic of me & Isabelle, I just cropped me out of it :)

Lane- You bring abouta  good point.  I would say that one is a wash.  My blog has over 540 subscribers here, as well as probably another 100 or so that get it via email.  While I do have over 3,000 followers on twitter, and 800 on facebook, most of those tweeters have no clue with what I am doing.  If I am lucky, 70-80 engage me on a regular basis.  Whereas this post alone has already garnered over 100 comments, 6 reblogs, and has been viewed over 1,000 times in less than a 24 hour period.  While it is touger to measure, I think I would prefer a blog for this one reason.  It allows me to stay focused and the engagement is with those looking for a specific.  The chances of getting off on rabbit trails about other things which I love to do & love interacting on the other networks, they can be worse than a ADHD kid in a room full of shiny objects.

I still believe blogging is the best way to go.  After all, Google and Yahoo like it.  My blogs still place higher than other parts of my company's web site in Google and Yahoo so as long as it gets search placement, there's a need for it.  The best use for facebook and twitter is to announce new blog posts.  I see a big jump in traffic when I do that.

I like blogging because it's my format, my purpose and my rules.  Tweeting and facebooking are not intended to be used as business promotional tools so it's a tough fit making them work that way.  Too many business tweets lose followers and who wants to be your facebook friend if you hound them about closings and new listings everyday.  Social media is just that, social.  Blogs are promotional media and that's what it's all about.

I think people will realize that social media is best left for social outlets like letting people know what I had for lunch and which facebook farm animal most resembles me.  I guess in facebook you could say that "I resemble this farm animal and as this farm animal, I'd like the listing at 123 Vine Trail because it has a big yard with lots of hay.  Eventually the social police will find you, denounce you as spam and drive you off facebook or twitter.  They have to do that to avoid becoming a non-entertaining spam depository.  That's bad news for social 2.0 promoters.

I'd rather blog and say what I want, how I want than mislead anyone by posing as a friend or follower.  After all, there's not a single person out there that I friended or followed just to get spammed by them and I don't have the time to tell everyone how many cups of coffee I drink each day (frightening amount by the way) nor do I expect anyone would care.

Blogging with solid content is still the king of the hill and doing so here at AR is even better. Those stats are rather comforting to avid bloggers who now know that it's worth it.

Jeremy, I think Ginger summed it up perfectly. As long as people are searching for information, there will be a place for blogs. And what better way to get to know someone than to read their blog? It's two-for-one!

Jeremy, so many comments, so little time. It seems that blogging is alive and well, at least today.

Technology evolves at an ever increasing pace, and with it, new ways to interact with others. There will probably come a day when blogging in passe, and we'll all look back and laugh at how antiquated the whole blogging idea was. But, for today, ...

A blog has always been somewhat of a silly concept to me.  Afterall, how is it different from the old school geocities and yahoo webpages that people used to have.  The key difference is that anyone can blog, it took a bit of technical skill to use those webpages (at 13).

The truth is that blog "posts" are today's "webpages" and they will be around as long as the content is what the "consumers" want.

Great article... my opinion is Social Media is great for Sphere of Influence marketing... especially facebook if used correctly... when it comes to generating business outside of your sphere of influence, via the internet, Blogging and a good SEO Website is still the way to go... I think it's important to do both now adays... if not, you are missing out on a big piece of the market...

Thank you, Jeremy.  This came to my email the other day and I deleted in by accident.  So, I am glad I found it in today's posts.

I am not sure why all this Social Media is not partitioned out by age groups.  Many of the more senior prospects in my database don't even use the internet and barely have email.  I attempt to type something on a keyboard, hit enter and look at the results than to learn Twitter and Facebook with which even I have trouble.

Jeremy...

I was reading this post yesterday but was rudely interrupted by a four year in need of my attention :)

Personally, I rather doubt blogs are a thing of the past. Without doing any research on my own, it's obvious to me that blogs will be around for awhile. When I do Google searches on different things I'm interested in, the first page of Google normally contains blogs about the topic. Sometimes that can be a bit irritating as I often need just plain old info.

The stats you've posted here are absolutely amazing. But, you already know that :)

TLW...ROAR!

Love this info Jeremy. Can never get enough blogging... Funny story: yesterday a pastor called me (he is starting another Cowboy Church, this time in my neck of the woods) and he said he read my blog and remembered my post titled "something like - - Never ask a HC Cowboy the size of his spread." I thinks blogs reflect your personality, diligence, and integrity to a certain extent. And they are more interesting than a Seller's or Buyer's list. ;-)

Thanks Jeremy:  I saw your post on Facebook & HAD to read it after seeing the title - I agree with you but thought maybe I have not been keeping up and things are changing drastically.  So glad to hear that it is not the case.  Thanks for doing all the research and the post to encourage me to keep doing what I am doing - although I have been a bit too busy lately to blog and it concerns me for the reasons you write about.  I get most of my business from my blog posts and website & now getting too busy to keep in up some days - definitely don't want to lose the momentum I have created - largely thanks to AR!!
