Tracy Chapman, who's written so little and said so much...to me, one of the more honest tributes to Dylan, whose inability to not be so drunk all the time made him lose some luster.  Tonight - that's what I am litstening to; her singing Bob Dylan in some small intimate cafe, probably on the West Coast, probably to a crowd of liberals who wish they could still smoke in places like that... To a bunch of liberals who know their history viscerally.  There is no anger here, but there is soul.:-)

My sister's friend was great friends with her when she went to college out east.  I'm sure that she's in that cafe right now.

Enjoyment of the music is not limited to liberals. Thanks, Inna, for letting me into the cafe.

Ted, ps: contrary to what you may have heard - the 'cafe' is indeed open to anyone:-)

Inna - I enjoy Tracy Chapman, and especially Bob Dylan, when he is coherent. I have spent many an evening in small, intimate venues on the West Coast, as a liberal, with plenty of liberals, who might have known their history viscerally, but certainly not accurately. But I will say that I do think fondly on those days, and sometimes miss them. Strangely, the only place I can remember the name of is a club called the Lion's Share, in Sausalito.

Mike - nothing better than coherent Dylan:-) Love Sausalito... Gosh, it's been a decade since I was there last... As for history, I guess you hung out with the wrong liberals, Mike...:-) There are plenty of those who do know their history accurately. You just have to look. Thank you for your comment.

Inna, Enjoyed Tracy Chapman. Oh yes, The times they are a changin! Even MacDougal Street, West 4th Street and Bleeker Street, while still lined with cafes and coffee houses, the hipster geeks today, the same age as Dylan when he played there sit at the window tables with their lattes and razor thin laptops.

Darn - for Bleeker Street, my old hang out.  We sat in the smoky Bitter End with rolling rocks, and not even cell phones.  We were, of course, poor liberal arts majors at the time, aspiring musicians, writers, and artists...

Lattes and laptops just doesn't fit...

Thank you for your comment!!!

You can still get rolling rock at the Bitter End but you have to stand outside in the street to smoke.

Missed you last comment, Mitchell. Well - I supposed one for two.  I'll take Rolling Rock at the bitter end and smoke outside with the no-longer-cool people then:-)

PS: Thanks for the memories.  Happier times, indeed, and free-er in all the ways that mattered.

Hi Inna ~ I laughed out loud at the "wish they could still smoke" remark.  I've thought more than once that the level of ugliness in society today is due, at least in part, to the fact that far fewer are smoking nowadays. Years ago I worked in a restaurant that had a non-smoking section of only five booths.  It was everyone's least favorite section because the people tended to be on the miserable, pain in the neck end of the spectrum. Now that's most of us.  Makes me want to light up!

Liz - there is something to be said for those smoky places, where one was either contemplative or sad, or passionate, but never angry and never dull... The magic of the times, or nicotine, depending on how you look at it.

Thank you for this very cool drop by:-)  Now, i am gonna go light up...
