Submarine in Hood Canal

By

This area has very interesting shipping lanes and waterways.  This photo was taken going from Port Townsend area to Kitsap Peninsula across the Hood Canal Bridge.  Sub is most likely on it's way to the Keyport Naval Base.  Traffic is held up with each passing for about 30 to 40 min. but does not happen that often and makes a good photo op!

What a great shot. When the bridge is raised; do we have to have a police officer each time? We have a draw bridge here in northern Va and all they do is turn on the red lights and people stop where they should. Love the photo though.

Hi, Sandra. Great picture! I once worked at the Bath Iron Works, a shipbuilder in Bath, Maine. They built frigates and destroyers and did sea trials on the Kennebec River so  there were occasions such as this to photograph them.

Thank you.  It seems to me they try to keep cars back a bit from the bridge and it is unusual to be in the front of the line of cars to take a photo.  Security is pretty tight around here, for good reason.

Hello Sandra, that is an amazing sight to see such a large vessel going through such a rather narrow opening in the Hood Canal Bridge.  I've been across this bridge (and the old one) only a few times so I'm sure my chances of seeing this were next to nil.  Thanks!  John

That is a cool shot Sandra.

I would bet the police officer is there for security of the sub.

Christopher, yes this is most likely an Ohio Class Trident or SSBN and these are carefully guarded.  As I mentioned above, for good reason.  Thanks for commenting.

Great photo, Sandra.  And you just happened to have your camera with you in the car -- great timing.  And I love your header photos, too.

Sallie, no accident that I had my camera with me.  Since I started blogging I keep it in my purse.  It's a Casio Exilim, very small and convenient with 5 mega pixels, rather an old model at that.
