targeting marketing dollars

How many of us truly have a business plan? How many of us are still afraid of the internet? How many of us don't utilize the internet as they should? I am sure marketing dollars are tight for many of us. How do you target your marketing dollars. Keeping in mind, time is money.  So how do you utilize your time and your money?

There are so many ideas and marketing strategies, even in a down market, when you don't have much money to use for marketing. In my opinion, I do believe that print advertising (not 100% dead) is out the door, that you can spend your money in better places.

I wanted to share three basic concepts that we might take for granted, and not utilize to our full potential. I was inspired to write this after reading Jay Beckingham's blog, "Rain Power" It's Awesome. Jay gave some good basic tips and talked about Googling yourself. I wanted to take this a step further.

3 Basic Concepts of Affordable Marketing

Google Jeff Belonger

1. - Business Cards - Probably the cheapest way to advertise yourself or keep your name in front of other perspectives. Sure, you usually have to give that person your business card. I did write 2 informational blogs in regards to business cards, what they should look like, and how to utilize them by being creative.

But how about taking it a step further. If you write enough blogs, and or have a few different web sites/blog sites, and interact on the internet; how about just telling people to Google your name.  I have talked about this in other marketing blogs and in my opinion, this could be a very powerful marketing tool. Not only powerful, but cheap. Sure, if you don't have a common name, this certainly helps.  But even for those with a common name, if you write quality blogs and use some of the tips that Jay mentioned in his blog, you can sometimes pass those celebrity names.  Overall, think about this, just telling a client to Google you. Or even write this on the back of your business card. I think it's a great way for a prospective client to get to know more about you.

2. - Testimonials - Now, I sometimes cringe while reading some testimonials, because I wonder if they are real. I actually saw someone copy someone else's testimonials.  Yes, this actually happened. But what another great way to market yourself on your home pages or possibly to have a link on your business card, sharing some testimonials. Now, unfortunately, I can't give you my specific link to my testimonials on my blog page, because it's down for now. But people actually read these sometimes and it can help make a decision, if those testimonials sound sincere and real. Example : I just had a borrower call me yesterday, after having an issue with their current lender, and actually read my testimonials. What impressed her was that I seem to care, because someone wrote that I actually was on the phone with them until 11 pm, answering some questions. Showing that you care, without pushing it down someones throat, or harping on it, can and does work. PS...  Video testimonials, which I wrote about a year ago, but I forgot to mention. Thanks to comments by Will and David, comments # 22 & 24.

blogging

3. - Internet marketing - Blogging & Social Networking - The basic concept here is having an internet presence. Knowing that 80% of the people that shop for homes and mortgages, first shop/search online. It doesn't mean that they make their final decision from searching the internet, but that it can play a large role in their final decision making process.

There are debates in blogging vs social networking, that blogging is dead, and that Twitter is the best way of doing business. I don't want to get into that debate. If you do want to hear a good topic on this, Jason Crouch and Ken Cook co-host a weekly radio show and talk about this stuff. Yesterday's talk show had Paul Chaney as a guest and they explored some good information. Social Media tricks & tips - (click here to hear yesterdays show)

Overall, I firmly believe that if you aren't actively blogging, that you are missing the boat.  In many cases, the expense for this can be cheap, depending on what services you use. In my opinion, if you are new to Active Rain, AR is a great place and affordable to start your blogging with.

What a great blog post, Jeff.  Thanks for sharing these wonderful tips.

Regarding testimonials - I simply can't believe that someone would take another testimonial that is not their own. Shameful.

Good stuff, Jeff. I think we can all do more on-line, but I would not give up print necessarily. Flyers, newsletters, listing business cards and more are great ways to market your business and services. Card.ly is an interesting site for creating a clickable business card (hope you don't mind me sharing the link - if so I will delete it)

Just for fun I Googled Prest Realty. Good Lord! It goes on for pages and pages! Of course a lot of it is those web sites where they pull info from the phone book or something and then try to entice the businesses into paying them for an enhanced listing, but a lot of it is our web site, active rain or other useful things. I even found that my AR COMMENTS showed up. Who knew? Well, evidently YOU did.

Internet marketing has been the key to my success and I know yours too!  I saw above where you mentioned for people to google your name.  I went to a listing preso a month ago, wanted to demonstrate some things on the web, and saw my name in the cache!  Guess they had already done their homework, which most homeowners do now.  Kind of ironic, eh?

Hi Jeff, great post btw. Yes, google me, I have said that for sure. Print advertising is all but dead, I agree with that too. And I am not giving up blogging for twitter or facebook. I had yet another call on my cell today from a buyer looking to spend up to 700,000 disposable money for a second home luxury type. I don't know what will come of it, but I got the call, right on my cell, looking for me. Yes indeed, I love that google milk. :D

Jeff,  Love your sign

Google Jeff Belonger

It reminded me that "A BUSINESS WITHOUT A SIGN IS A SIGN OF NO BUSINESS"  Today, one of the most economical signs for any Realtor, Loan Officer or other sales profession is a personal website.  It surprises me home many people just count upon the Company site for a web presence.  Some of the reasons I suggest Realtors, Loan Officers and Title Reps have a personal Vanity named site are:

  • IF you change companies will consumers really find you
  • Some companies limit what you can place on a company site
  • IF you have children or even Grand Children you can use a personal site to post pictures and then just give that site name to friends and relatives.  IF your child is in sports imagine a photo montage of a T-Ball, soccer or football pictures that you could tell other parents to visit the site to see the latest pictures.
  • Highlight your hobbies and share with other hobbiest.
  • Support to any charity or cause you support.

Of course you would mention and provide a link to your profile on your companies website.

For anyone fearful of maintaining a website they should check out http://www.officelive.com/en-us/ because Microsoft offers free hosting of a domain and even the first years domain restration.  The sites are simple, so as long as you can type, you could set up a website.

Jeff - Very good post about marketing yourself. I agree that blogging has come a long way. It makes it easy for someone to get to know YOU if you are blogging from the heart. I think you can tell with some what they are all about, where as others do a lot of marketing reports which don't really tell anyone anything about you. However, the flip side is that it shows you are involved with your market. Thats a plus also, if thats all your interested in.

GERALD... . my pleasure and thanks for the compliment. And much success to you to.

JANICE.... . I think a webinar is a great concept, depending on who you are targeting and what it is about.  Let me know more about it.... and good luck with it.

JEFF... . no, I don't mind about the link at all. In regards to my statement about print marketing being out the door...  I didn't say 100% dead though... lol  Sure, could some of what you mentioned work..  yes.  But my point to this blog was that so many of us ignore what can be done through the internet and blogging. And a good food for thought... if you received a newsletter in the mail or one in your inbox, which one would you open and read first. Which one might get tossed and not read at all. There are people saying one thing over the other... but that is where you need to do your research.  Because the paper one will cost more, and if it gets thrown away, that is lost marketing dollars. One needs to track all of this to make these assumptions. I also like listing business cards, that's if we are on the same page with that. Overall, thanks for your feedback. I still need to get to your social media post that was featured. thanks

LISA.... . my pleasure and thanks for the compliment... and for stopping by.

LES & Leslie aka Prest reality.... .  Google is a lot more powerful than many of us give credit to. And yes, there will always be those paid sites at the top, but some experts have said that the people or companies that get good business results are usually right under that, the last one on the bottom, and the first 2 on top of page 2.  Just some food for thought.  thanks

TRACY... . I know internet marketing has worked very well for me.  It's worked enough for me to keep my head above water, at least this year. The year before, I have a great year.  And yes, your story is ironic, because people are doing their homework online.... even in many cases, when they are referred to someone local.

ANDREA.... . if you get a chance, please listen to Jason's and Ken's radio show from Tuesday... some interesting opinions and input.  But start after the 10th minute into the show... it gets better after the 20th minute, when they start to get going. I think if you use twitter and facebook in the correct manor, it can get you business. But I will still say that most of it will come from blogging, for several reasons. One is that my blogs are out there forever and people have come across some of my stuff from 2007.  thanks

TIM.... . you hit the nail on the head, about sharing and showing your personal side, which can be done on a site, even a business site, if it's yours.  I won't mention a name, but there was a loan officer on here, the first 1 1/2 years, who marketed his company's name.. and it was a big company.  Poof... they are gone now, and so are his blogs with those titles of his company. One thing, you mentioned web site...  unless you established one in the mid 90's, late 90's, and maybe even up until 2003... a blog site in my opinion is the best now.  Blog sites if done correctly, aren't static. You can make them change daily, which google loves and looks for. Overall, you bring up some great points on how to attract certain types of business to your site.  thanks

JOHN.... . I think blogging is an excellent way to do business in today's market. And as you and Tim mentioned, it's a great way to show your personal side, something that is usually hard to fake, if you do it from the heart. Which is something that I have to get back to, but requires blogging almost once a day though.  thanks

LINDA.... . That is great news... how long have you been on AR?  And yes, AR does rock... thanks for stopping by.

Thanks for the props, Jeff! Agents and loan officers are beginning to realize there is a VAST difference between someone who blogs and uses Twitter and a true New Media Expert. It's kind of like web pages - anyone can "make a web page" but only a few can make it collect data, filter data and categorize it, automatically stay in touch with the people in the database AND report it all back to the site owner in an easy to use and understand format. Blogging, by the way, is definitely not dead so if you want to continue to be successful keep providing the best FREE information to your prospective customers and keep getting a deeper understanding of how they find your blog :)

PAT.... . I think these are very effective, cash strapped or not...  but if you put some elbow grease into these topics mentioned, you should get some leads and be able to close them. I know it's worked for many of us.

KEN aka new media COOK.... . my pleasure...  it was just amazing when business started to slow up in the real estate business, on how many of these realtors and loan officers started to claim that they are social networking... blogging, or social media gurus...  I know a few that could hardly get themselves going in the blogging world alone. So what made them these gurus?  Just trying to generate income, even if they only had a clue. So I agree with you.  And yes, I know blogging is not dead... and to me, this would be common sense because of how blogging works and how the average consumer searches for information. Thanks for the feedback and input...

I totally believe in business cards! you can use them at so many face to face networking events. If you don't have a business card, then you are dead in the water!

Great post! I agree that using all of these elements combined is the way to go, especially in today's world. There is ony one other thing I would add, and that's VIDEO! Adding video to your website or blog will increase your search engine ranking exponentially! That's what we do here at Trisolt Video & Web Productions and we pride ourselves in doing it incredibly well! So whether you use professional video or you use webcam video you do yourself, don't leave out this really important element!

Video Testimonials will be the next step. I have always had the thought that the buyer will call you if you offer something they want. Having the IDX send them exact seaches is key, videos presentation of my listings and all about David Pannell Broker.  Here is a link to one of them. I am in production of about 10 Testimonials that past clients will be on a green screen with their homes in the back gorund. It use to be what can I offer them, but now I think it is what can I do for them better then the other guy in town. Also, the Google me....is a great idea. I was made fun of when I first placed it on my card 4 years ago....but know people find the connect and say "Wow that is such a good idea". My Home here

MATTHEW.... .  thanks... I think some of these things are over-looked from time to time... yet so simple and not really expensive.

SANDY... .  well, if you just don't have a business card period, shame on you.  A pet peeve of mine, those that don't carry them on themselves basically 24/7, excluding the shower... lol  I think in 20 years, I have been caught twice without cards ever...  even when I played sports and such...  thanks

WILL.... . an excellent point that I forgot to mention in my post above. I have written about video testimonials, and then forgot all about them... lol  I was working on a few other projects... and this is a great idea.  A fyi for the future though.  Many of us don't appreciate links promoting other services.  Just tell us to google your name then.  ;o)  thanks

BRETT.... . well, print is still around, and even if prices come down some, I don't think in many cases that it's cost productive.  But then again, it truly depends on your target audience.  Just my opinion... thanks

DAVID... . I have actually seen video testimonials for the last 1 1/2 years... I meant to jump on that bandwagon, but I lost sight, and that I was pre-occupied with a few other projects.  Thanks for the reminder as I told Will above.  Also, when leaving links, be careful..  some will delete your comment.. thanks

One more affordable marketing method is article marketing, which ties into many of the items you listed in the blog post. Not only do articles posted on the various ezine sites offer SEO but if the links to the networking sites and the writer's own website are included, they offer good clickables for people who are interested in knowing more about the expert writing the article.

Not only do articles allow the writer to portray themselves as an expert in their industry but they can also be recycled into blog posts, included as links on the social networking sites, recopied into newsletters, sent out as autoresponder messages to subscribers and can be copied onto the writer's own website in an Article Bank link.

Good post!

JASON.... .  my pleasure... and what an appropriate picture of you and your thumbs up.. in regards to your comment...   ;o)

CYNTHIA..... . yes, not a wise move. But in all honesty, I have never had one client ask to speak to one of my testimonials.  But then again, I would have no problem, since they are real.  And thanks for the compliment.

A long time ago I heard a real estate instructor say "If you're out of business cards, you're out of business."

And yet, I've known agents who could make a box of 250 cards last a few years! They were just too valuable to give away, I guess.

A better plan is to try to give away as many as you can, and to always make sure they include a good photo of you - so that people who might not remember your name can still identify you.

I also agree that blogging is a good idea - as long as you blog about things that are useful and remember to check your spelling, grammar, and word choices. Too many people use their blogs as a sort of stream of consciousness outlet so they ramble on about nonsense. Others are trying to convey a good message but their typos and incorrectly used words decrease their credibility as professionals. (I'm thinking about errors such as using "loose" when they mean "lose," and "there" when they mean "their.")

As for Twitter - people should use some sense. I can't even believe some of the answers to "What are you doing?" that I've seen there!
