The Raleigh News and Observer has unveiled their new site.

It has a cleaner look.

I think the advertisements, whose presentation, of course, is the biggest design challenge, still intrude tremendously.  I resent an advertising header that makes me scroll down for content that doesn't make it to my screen.  But, navigation is simpler and the site is cleaner.

One suggestion would be to let me find the columnists and bloggers by name and with less clicking and scrolling.  If I can't find Barry Saunders, AC Snow, Ruth Sheehan, et al, easily, the site will fail.

The N&O should be able to be a leader in content generation and a solid Google ranking contender.  The organization has extensive archives, and news connections all over North Carolina and the Southeast.  And they have reported growth in traffic to their site while the print edition shrinks.

Unfortunately, they have reduced staff to the point that it diminishes production of compelling stories.  And the losses include many veteran writers whom we miss.

All in all, an improved site.  "Deep and rich" is how the N&O describes it. I'll watch it, especially since the enjoyment of the print edition is declining quickly.

Let's face it.  If the online issue doesn't succeed, the publication wil probably go out of business.

That page, as I see it, is a lot easier to read than my own Washigton Post which has full page pop-ups that obscure everything.   Also, the Post makes me sign in every dang time to get anything more than a snippet.

Lenn,

I like cookies, and I'm glad the N&O uses them.  And I agree.   As goes the digital edition, so goes the print edition.

Mike, The Naples Daily News recently updated their online presence.  They also redesigned their print edition by changing the fonts they use and the way the paper is organized.  The handwriting is on the wall, if you will pardon my pun!

Just looked at it Mike and couldn't help notice that the predominent links, top bottom and side, are for cars, jobs and real estate! Should tell us what folks value in a "paper" these days! I do like how easy it is to get to the community papers but overall it is clear that the journalism part of our newspaper is giving way to the search engine function! I get more "news" inmy RSS feed!

SarahGray,

Agreed all around!

For layout, I prefer the NY Times email that I get every day.
