Vacation Points of Interest!Beaches

Well, it's that time of year when we all are thinking about taking some time away to spend with family, friends or just getting away from the daily grind here like my home here in Olathe, Kansas!!

Fly FishingSo it started me thinking about where would we like to go this year?  Hawaii, is always one of our first choices (we love Kauai), but not always within the budget to go.  Yosemite National Park is a place we would like to go, my wife and I went to Yellowstone a couple years ago and loved it!  We came back through the Badlands, saw Mount Rushmore, and drove through the plains.

We have visited Branson, MissouriEureka Springs, ArkansasHot Springs, Arkansas, Estes Park, Colorado, San Diego, California, and have made trips to Ohio visiting family.  We thought about Williamsburg, Virginia, or Mrytle Beach, South Carolina, but haven't clearly made up our minds.

So, I would like to hear comments from you of places you have visited on vacation that you would recommend to others.  ForestWhat did you like about your vacation spot, did you have a great time with lots of things to see?  We are adventurous, don't mind driving and exploring, and enjoy finding historical places to see and learn more about.  Love the mountains, the hills of the Ozarks and enjoy clear streams and fresh pine scented air!

Now, it's your turn, where did you go for vacation or where are you going and why?  What did you like best?  Would you go again?  Let me hear from you!

Give me Hawaii anyday!  We made the mistake of going on a cruise one year, I DETESTED it.  I lost control of all my business...I hated being at sea with no internet connection, no cell phone connection.  I LOVE the beaches in Hawaii and Kauai is our favorite island!

David, I had a vacation today. We flew up to Wildwood, NJ. Spent the day with son and daughter in law. Snacks on the deck, watched the VFW parade from the roof top. Took a tram ride on the boardwalk, great people watching, yummy snacks like Curley's Fries and a chocolate dipped ice cream cone from Dairy Queen. We had a lovely dinner at Sunset Bay and the sunset was beautiful. A night flight home and I am sleeping in my own bed... no packing... no unpacking.

Mary, I'm with you!  I've had several people try to convince me about a cruise, but I don't know if I would like it or not.  Recently, a friend mentioned taking a mediterranean cruise.  Said it was the best!  Of course, there are many caribbean cruises as well.  Nice to hear about why you wouldn't want to go.  Where in Kauai did you stay?  We love the Princeville area, but have also stayed in the Lawaii Beach area.   Just love Kauai!!

Margaret, WOW what a day!!  I'm sure it was well worth the visit to your son and daugher-in-law as well as the beach dining!  Sounds terrific!

Rosarita, Mexico!!!

We're leaving on the 30th and wont be back until the following Saturday.  We rented a house on the beach close to downtown.  We walk down the beach in the morning and pick up some fresh tortillas for breakfast.  Sometimes we just get breakfast there!  We light off fireworks (real fireworks!) at nite.  sometimes the red tide is there and the water becomes translucent green!  One time, there were dolphins playing the waves all nite and all day.  it was so beautiful and relaxing.  We try to go every year.

I live and work in my vacation spot, Summit County Colorado, home of Breckenridge, Frisco, Keystone and Copper Mountain.  Believe it or not we just got back from visiting family in Lenexa and Ottawa, Kansas, so I guess your home was our vacation destination this year.

You gotta search around for deals! If you buy your tickets a month or two ahead for off peak season you can get some great deals! One day I'd like to go to Molokai. Serious. That's the one island I haven't been that I would like to see. And then off to see Stonehenge!  I've been to Germany, Turkey (beautiful ruins!) and would like to go all over the world. Okay, that didn't help huh?

We have been to Hawaii once.  We only went to The big island.  We want to go to some of the smaller islands next time.  We also love to go to Tahoe.  I grew up living there in the summers at my grandparents house.  I love floating on the lake and forgetting all my troubles.  A closer place we love is Bishop, going to Schatz bakery and staying at one of the lodges there. For a day trip we love going to the beach around Santa Monica.  Great.  Thanks.  Now all I want to do is go away.  Besides the fact that it is 1230 am and I have to get up in 6 hours.  Peace.  Earl "The Pearl" Sorrells

David,

Glad to hear you've visited our town, Hot Springs, Ark. Would you believe it's almost like a vacation living here? We enjoy the energy nearly 3 million visitors every year.

I'm with Mary. Any vacation without internet and cell phone connections is a miserable beat for this techno-addict.

To wind down, though, we enjoy Rosemary Beach, Fla., a quiet place -- close enough, but with a far away feel.

Hope you'll come back to visit us sometime!

We just had a wonderful visit in Minnesota.  We took a tour of the Amish country in the southeast part of the state, and got to visit several Amish homes.  The scenery was beautiful--it was so peaceful, and like taking a step back in time.  If you go, stop in Lanesboro where there is a great little German restaurant with homemade brats and sauerkraut, as well as nice shops.  There are Amish tours from both Lanesboro and Harmony, which is where our tour departed from.  There are numerous B and B's in the area, but book ahead.

Enoy!

Marie, wow that sounds very nice and relaxing.  I'll have to look it up!  You obviously are enjoying it or you would return every year.  Do you know how big the town is or if there is a web site about it?  Just curious.  Thanks for sharing!

Meredith, I've been in your area in the winter, but not the summer.  Is it as beautiful in the summer as the winter?  Of course, snow skiing is out in the summer, but are there falls and other things to see?  We love Estes Park, but I thought Steamboat and the other ski areas might be a great place to visit!  Thanks for sharing !

Sally, your so funny!  Love to see the history of places and learn what I can about them, so love your suggestions.  Sharon and I thought about a Molokai visit as well.  As long as I don't have to deal with the tourist traffic, I'm good with it.  I guess that's why we love Kauai!  Thanks for sharing!

Earl, where is Bishop, in Arizonia?  Tahoe would be sometime interesting, as I have heard it's up in the mountains and you can expect the unexpected there.  The lake looks really interesting as well.  Something definitely to consider!  Hope you had a great Father's Day and was able to get some rest!

Rebecca, Hot Springs was great, we've been there twice.  My son and I played Belvedere several times, had a great time!  I'll look into Rosemary Beach, FL as quiet and relaxing is always best for a vacation.  Thanks for sharing, we'll look you up the next time we are in Hot Springs!

Ruth Ann, where abouts in Minnesota?  We visited the Amish country in Ohio just south of Cleveland about 2 hours.  They have GREAT food at their restaurants!  I'm always in awe as to how they will live and the quality of workmanship they do.  Thanks for sharing!

Bishop is in California.  It is near Mammoth.  My fathers day was fine.  I had to work at my JOB today, but when I got done my wife and I went to diner.  I got an American Eagle flag shirt and a mutli purpose sander.  It was very cool.  Best thing though was spending time with my wife and talking with her.  How was yours?  May God Bless.  Earl "The Pearl" Sorrells

Anywhere but Florida, Yes Florida is the #1 vacation for more people in the world but if I do not go far from the sun, the beach and the theme parks it does not feel like a vacation ^_^ . So far Hilton Head is the only place I have visited for vacation twice, but usually I try different places.

Another Colorado secret!  Summer in Summit County, home to 4 ski resorts, is just as fabulous as the winters.  Hiking trails everywhere, mountain biking, plenty of small town activities in Breckenridge and Frisco and temps in the 70's when Denver is sweating it out in the 90's.  It's a year round destination location.

Carmen, okay rub it in!! :-)  Florida is a great place to visit.  Our first real family vacation was spent in Kissimmee.  Visited Disney, Universal and Sea World!  Years before I remember visiting a place I think was called Silver Springs, great place where tarzan movies were shot and wildlife abounds!  Of course there is the weather good and bad you deal with, but all in all, great place to visit!

Meredith, how far from Denver is Summit County?  I will have to look into this one as well.  We can drive to Denver in about 8 hours, so this might be in the the running!  Thanks for the tip!

Summit County is an only hour or so west of Denver, just on the other side of the Continental Divide.  There are some great golf courses here and many white water river rafting spots not far away.  You can explore the mountains on bikes, ATV's, horseback or on foot.  Check out our events calendar for planned events happenings in the county.  We update it frequently.  There's no shortage of things to do around the County!  You can find more info about the area on our website www.mountain-living.com

Palm Springs in the winter.... going on 23 years now.

Oh, and Mt. Rushmore is one of my all time favorite tourist spots.  Gave me goosebumps.

Carol, do you have a home in Palm Springs or do you rent a place?  If you own and only use it in the winter, do you rent it out the rest of the year?  I'm looking at opportunities on investment properties and just trying to get some ideas on feasibility.  Thanks for commenting!

Hi David,  We rent a condo for a month in February.  It's cheaper than renting a hotel, with far more amenities.  Should have bought one several years ago (of course), but never wanted to worry about the absentee ownership thing.  We usually rent in the Cathedral City area because we like the central location.  Canyon Shores or Cathedral Canyon Country Club are our favorites so far.

Hawaii spring time and dont forget to eat at the worlds famous garlic shrimp place somewhere around Kaneohe..yes that food truck is famous! I figure that business makes more than $300k a year.

Riviera Maya during the summer months- visit X-caret and stay at playa del carmen - best hotel in area is playacar Palace steps away from ocean and town, yes good shopping for the wife and kids and less crowded than cancun. Go scuba diving at cozumel - 2nd best dive spot in the world. Yes do request Cozumel diving not the one around cancun, boring.

Winter Time, I was thinking Dominican republic..Punta Cana

David,

there is a website for Rosarita.  I think You can google it and find a list of all the homes available.

Rosarita is one of the three or four cities where we Gringos can actually own a property - a mandate by mexico in 1999 ( I think.)  Donald Trump is building a hugo condo there.  i should've bought a lot there last year.  It was only $70,000.  Now it's selling for $250,000!  Since Rosarita is so close and it is not overdeveloped or seedy like Tijuana, there are a lot of people going there.  Many americans own property there and rent it out to vacationers like me.  i will send you pictures of the house we are renting.  it's close to downtown and is on the beach.  so nice to wake up and hear the ocean...

Marie, now that's a very nice profit in one year!!  I've seen Costa Rica start doing this as well.  I could have purchased 40 acres for $20k just a couple years ago, now it's $80 for a few acres.
