Special Blogging Tool.......Short or long form?

long road

How looooooonnnngggg is your blog usually? Do you keep it short just because others tell you to keep it short? Are you afraid to lose the reader half way through?

Question : Who decides what is too long and what is too short? In my opinion, if you said the reader or if you said the writer, you are correct with either answer.

As Rich Jacaobson wrote : Rules for Blogging: "The Core Rules of Netiquette", these are great basic concepts when visiting someone else's blog. But who are you to tell me if my blog is too long? Is it because you......

  • get bored easily?
  • because you want to read more than one blog within 5 minutes?
  • because it just LOOKS to dang long to you?

Define long.........   well, I am waiting?  Oh, it is your preference. I had one person tell me if the blog doesn'[t fit on their screen, then it's too long. Okay? You could be missing out on a lot. If you talk to professional writers, many will tell you to write just enough to cover the topic at the appropriate level of detail. Then Jeff, how long can this be? I have heard all kinds of numbers. The average that I have heard is 750 to 1,000 words. Okay, so how long is that? I don't have time to count these myself. What does this many words look like? Abraham Chaffin was so kind to create his own counting tool and shared it in this post -- SEO Word Counter  What an awesome tool. It not only counts your total words for you, but your key words and unique phrases.

Let's look at the different numbers:

Some say under 250 is not enough to achieve your objective. Some say 500 words is just enough. As I stated above, many say 750 to 1,000 is just right. I just think it is a psychological thing. Mind over matter. What do you think?

Conclusion :  So, which is it still? Or is it your preference. There is no right or wrong. My belief is if you start off with something good, then usually that should be enough to keep you reading. It's called capturing your INTEREST. Or are you the type of person that first judges a blog because it looks to long, even if you like the author and think that they usually write good blogs. Or do you read the title and the first sentence or two before you decide. Or just the fact that you want to get in and get out as quickly as possible. If this is the case, then why even read it. Can this hurt you? YES it can. Think of it as a short story.

Find a length that matches your topic and writing style. Be YOURSELF when blogging. And before you leave, please read this blog by Karl Christen : Pyramid of a complete loan officer  This is a great example of a long blog that has so much information. There were 1,154 words and it looks long. Trust me, when I first looked at it, I almost went to the next blog because it looked long.

Advice :  If you write a blog that looks like it could have 2 to 3 smaller topics within, write a short series. But if it is based on one thing and you need to drive the point home, but it's long..... stick with it. Just as in Karl's blog, because I learned a lot from it. But don't keep it short, 300 to 500 words, just because of others that have told you to keep it short. That might be bad advice and you might leave out some great information, insight, or opinion. And this is what many readers are looking for. Again, be yourself.

Jeff,

Heck of a job my friend and interesting topic.  I'll take the George Carlin way of thinking and tweek it a bit to this particular subject.  Posts in of themselves aren't good or bad, they are only words, no matter how long or shot they may be.  The words are neutral, innocent.  It is the context that counts, the use, the intention that counts and how the reader identifies or ignores for that matter, its existence.  The best posts, in my mind at least, aren't necessarily the most popular, which probably lends creedence to why they are the best.

I recently turned a friend on to blogging (not real estate related and not on active rain).  Some party pooper immediately posted that his blog was too long!  He was CRUSHED and discouraged from posting again.  I asked, "Who's blog is it anyway"?  We had a small coaching session about how to get devoted readers and not making it too boring and such, just to assure him.

His blog was only about 4 short paragraphs with a photo.  I explained that whole "everybody had an opinion and everybody has armpits, thing, too......and they all smell".

Long to me means that it is one great big paragraph.  I HATE when people don't hit the enter key a few times in their post and just post it as one big paragraph.  I'll skip over it.  They are too hard to read.

I like yours.  It wasn't too long, and it has some bold text to help break it up more.  It makes it a lot easier to read.

I also like when people add pics in the post.  Don't know why, I just do.

Blogs are not meant no be short, nor long.  They are meant to be whatever you make them to be.  If you have something quick to say, then it will be short.  If you have something in depth to talk about, then it will be long.

The only blogging rule there should be, is to make the info you are sharing useful.

That just my 2 cents though!

It depends on the subject and my interest level but I am a reader...I love reading.  I have some short posts  and long ones. I sat through a blogging seminar last week in St Louis and they said to keep them short. I'll continue to do what I do and read what I find interesting.

Jeff--Depends so much on the topic and the reader. If the information is presented in a boring way....no matter long or short, I cannot read it. However if the blogger really peaks my interest, I will continue to read. Good food for thought.

Jeff - I would have to say as a gal who has a very short attention span the shorter the better....  I will comment on the longer ones and bookmark them to come back later to read...  Personally I like the 300-500 word rule of thumb.

Have a great day!!

I read one blog here that usually has very long posts, but the way he's such an interesting writer that I'm hooked, I read every word!  Then I'll read others that, even though they're short, I can just skim.  My posts are whatever length I think gets the point across.  Sometimes less is more, sometimes more is more.

HAPPY FATHERS DAY to all Fathers out there.............

Kellie......  that is one thing that I don't do is read my blogs over and over before I publish them. Sometimes or usually....  in the middle...  but that I would read them once and then publish them.

But as we both have stated, just writing good content should be enough. I think the issue why so many people from Active Rain say that many posts are too long is because they are in such a hurry to try and read so MANY blogs. That they don't want to be slowed down by a long post. But again, what happens if there is really good content?  Their loss then....  thanks for your input and for the polite compliment.

Joddie........ I think I started to worry more because of several members that stated blogs should not be long. Read my comment to Kellie, above you. That is my opinion.

One thing that having this thought in the back of my mind has done for me, is that it has helped me tweak several of my posts, to cut out the unnecessary sentences that do add to the blog.

Randy......  I was waiting for someone to say that....  lol   In regards to your statement, several people have stated this and I believe in the same. Especially if you have followers. Read the comment that I left Kellie F., two above you. That is my honest opinion and why we get so many that say it's too long.

Bob & Carolin.......  As stated several times, I agree. And this is sad, because they could be missing out on something good. Question....  why can't they just pretend that they are reading 2 posts at once?  lol  Or pretend it's a 2 part series, stuck together?  Or take a break half way through it?  lol  My answer to all of this ?...  read the comment that I left for Kelli F., 3 above yours. I think this might be very true. Thanks for your feedback.

Jason..... I know George Carlin is funny, at least to some.... but I don't follow him that much. I loved the last sentence and could hold some truth to it. Thanks for stopping by and for the kind words.

Chris.....  that's a shame  that happened, but it will unfortunately. Especially when people are hiding behind their computer. You wonder how some would act face to face.  But your answer to him was right on. You see Rich Jacobson say the same thing in other people's comments.

And I loved the armpit thing.....  has your friend gone back to blogging?  Willing to give it a try again?  What was his topic about?  thanks for stopping by.

Becky...... yes, I do hate the one big paragraph. But hey, you have to start some where. I know when I first started back in October of 2006, I had a few that might have been just one big paragraph, even though I knew from past teachers, that wasn't correct. But some people just get nervous in the beginning. They find their voice and or just get more comfortable about blogging.

In regards to pictures and bold words do help and can help someone keep their attention. I guess it also has to do with your title of the blog and possibly the first few sentences. Overall, there are many factors that can keep a person glued to your blog, even if it is long.  Good CONTENT is key....

Thanks for the feedback and for your input.  It was .02 well spent.  ;o)

Matthew...... thanks. And I was just about to say, 7 total what. But now I get it... lol  So, it's Sunday morning. lol

Monika..... all great points. So, a blogging seminar told you to keep it short?  Question :  Did they define short?  How many words?  I would really like to know. Now, again, I have talked to some that are so-called professionals on this.... and some of said, short, long....   but have great content and a very good style and you can't go wrong. Read my comment to Kellie F., up above. Again, I would love to know what they meant by short.  thanks for this feedback.

All 3 of you snuck in here as I was commenting....  ;o)

Teri..... I totally agree... you basically said everything in one sentence. Thanks for these thoughts.

Desiree.... so, the 300 to 500 word blogs?  hhhmmm.... I guess I'll just have to write the cliff note section for you in regards to my blogs. I would say half are at least 1,000 words or more....  and the rest would fall in between 600 to 800............

Possibly do what I said in a comment to Bob & Carolin....  maybe try that?  But book marking is a great idea. I hear several people do this and that can help, when you have more time. Thanks for your input and you have a great day also.

Sarah.....  I totally agree.... how ever you get your point across. I think that is key, not how long or short it is. But as we all know, you can't please everyone. Thanks for your input.

Jeff,

They said a few paragraphs and link heavy. I was surprised by how short they meant. I guess the shorter the better when posting to the consumer.  As for a social network like AR who knows...

When I think blog, I think short and to the point.  250 is plenty unless you need more to get your point across.

I write to just get the point across, sometimes long, sometimes short.

I enjoy short posts, but some people write so well, that I read every word. We all just need to relax, keep blogging and keep growing.

Monika..... But still, what was their definition of short?  200 words? 500 words?  And heavy links? I heard that you have to be careful about too many links.  Anyhoo....  just like SEO and everything else. What is considered opinion and what is considered 95% truth.  thanks again....

Treci......  well, short and to the point can be good and easy. But when I blog about a certain program or maybe the different types of PMI (mortgage insurance), it's hard to be short to get the point. And not only the point,  but examples of the different types. It also depends on the topic and such.  thanks for your input.

Missy.....   the point, the point, and what was that again?   lol  Yes, sometimes short and sometimes long.

Now, you said anything about relaxing......  lol  I am tired, it was a long day of golf.  Thanks for stopping by.

Hey, Jeff!  Thanks for the mention. Good of you to bring up this topic. As one who reads literally hundreds of blogs each day, I can tell you that the 'long' ones rarely garner my full attention, regardless of how interesting or good they may be. If you really have THAT much to say, like you suggest, consider breaking them down into 'parts' and publishing a series. Readers want short, concise, to-the-point quality articles, not incessant rambling without any destination...thanks again, Jeff!

Brad.....  I am sure many of us worry about this. Thanks for the compliment.

Rich..... my pleasure. But you read only hundreds?  lol  Are you sure that it doesn't seem like thousands? Yes, you have a hard and sometimes thankless job. Even though you don't really read long blogs, maybe at least skim them?  I have found some great blogs that were slightly over 1,000 words. Just as the I used as my example in this blog.

In any case, thanks for your feedback, your input, and for the kind comments.

Leah.... it can sometimes go either way. Each one of us has our own preferences. Thanks for the polite compliment.
