I have a car that reminds me when service is due.

The other morning, it notified me that 'service A is needed soon'.  I happen to know that 'Service A' is a simple oil change.  The first three years of oil changes were free, but my car is now 4 years old, so I anticipated a $20-25.00 visit.  The reminder in my car is relentless, as it will repeat "service A is needed soon' each and every time I start the car.  As a Realtor, you and I both know, that could be a dozen or more times each day!  I find that annoying, so I like to get the service done before it changes to 'Service A needed now', or the more pressing 'Service A overdue'.  (I'm sure the next in the series is: "don't forget to call your mother"... and I can't allow it to get that far!)

So I took the car in for service.  On arrival, they notified me that there were several fluid changes that were due at this time/mileage.  Brake fluid, transmission fluid, steering and a couple of other fluids as well as the needed Oil Change ... suddenly made my $25 visit disappear... and changed to a multi-hundred dollar visit.  Sigh, it is what it is.

In addition, there was a recall service that needed to be done, that had to do with Steering systems catching on fire... it was free, but would add 3 hours to my service. Fortunately, my car dealer offers free luxury loaners (a lovely method to attempt to entice you into buying the next level up).  So I took my loaner, and left... scheduled to return at 4:00.

Shortly after returning to the office, the dealership called to enlighten me that in addition to the fluids, their inspection shows that I need brakes and rotors, front and back.  (hmm... the brakes were a little squeeky).

Now, oddly enough, this post isn't really about my car.  I know it sounds like it is... but it isn't.  Here comes the part that interested me:

When I returned to pick up my no-longer-$25-service-call-job, the young mechanic with acne (actually he looked a lot like the guy in the photo) greeted me, had me sign some paperwork... (pay for the service)... and then as he held the car door open for me, shook my hand, and then asked "Are you interested in buying a home... looking for a Realtor?".

I presumed he had seen some of my brochures, or business cards strewn about the car and was making a joke, so I laughed and responded: "Yes, I am".

He looked a little surprised, and said "you are what?".

I said: "I am, a Realtor!".

"Oh," he replied.... "never mind... so am I".

It then occurred to me that he was a Realtor (see how quick I am?) and he'd been soliciting business!!  He was working as a car-jockey at the local dealership, while moonlighting as a Realtor... (or maybe the other way around)... and my statement of "Yes, I am" had caught him by surprise... he thought he'd found a potential buyer!!

That's one heck of a way to make a living.

He's probably making more money as a mechanic than most Realtor's are making.

Alan, good story, I agree with some of the other comments that at least he was asking for the business.

Tough times bring out some of things in people we don't want to see, like moonlighting car jockey's...at least he was trying, I'll give him that much..but probably not the best approach or place to do it

It is too bad that agents have to take other jobs to get by. I just saw one of our local Realtors working behind the checkstand at the grocery store and felt bad for her.

I know part of it has to do with the market in a given community, but have to think that those of you who are really working at the job and spending your "free time" prospecting and working on other forms of marketing are going to be successful. And you'll make far more money than you could by taking a low-wage job.

It reminds me of the restaurant that didn't have enough customers so they cut their hours - so they got even fewer customers and cut their hours again. You know how that story ends.

I also understand how a poor market and a discouraged attitude can get in the way of having enough enthusiasm to market well. I also understand the need to have some money coming in "today" rather than in a month or two after you've sold a home.

A sad situation.

Many local Realtors who bought rental property  several years ago were the first to go under and had their homes and investment propertied go into foreclosure.  A local weekly tab prints foreclosures weekly and the local real estate agents continue to be on their list.

I applaud agents for doing what is needed in these economic times!!

Marte - it's a sad situation, indeed.

Mark - I probably wouldn't either.

Wallace - kudos for doing what it takes...

Well...I give the guy credit for trying.  He is taking the "feet on the street" approach with a twist of practical...need to make money!

I'm late to the party here Alan, I don't think it's funny at all.  It's pathetic that we've got realtors being car jockey's at the local dealers.  I bet he's great at parking cars all nice & tight but can he sell homes?  Should he stay a car jockey as his first calling?  Hmmmm.  Why weren't you offered the 'frat' discount as Gary Wortel asks?

Lisa - many kudos already given

Michael - he did indeed... smart?  that depends on the goal... if the goal is to keep you family fed.. you bet he's smart.  If the goal is to become a successful Real Estate agent... I don't know about that.

Lyn - it is pathetic... but then in tough times, there are just a certain amount of agents working on the periphery, that just won't make it.  And no... no disount.

That's so funny - and so sad! I guess when the public thinks we really don't do much to earn our payday, they can get their license and do it on the side.

I don't know, Joetta, that his license is new... he may have had it for a couple of years, and just found this year to be tough... who knows?

I like your angle. I also hate those annoying warnings that will not go away unless you go to a dealer.
