My Dad never seemed like the other dads...on Open School Night. They all seemed tall, suited and refined. My Dad was short, and his clothes never fit right, and he had a moustache. He talked to everyone.
When he was a little boy, his Dad passed away and his mother said he had to go out and help earn a living for her and his younger brother, Ralph. He sold newspapers on the corner on a busy Philadelphia Street.
He managed somehow to have several jobs after that, working at a haberdashery store, and then married my Mom...and moved to Long Beach, NY. He went into business with his brother, who was supposed to be a doctor, but decided instead to own a jewelry manufacturing company in NY. They struggled. My uncle ran the design and manufacturing of the costume jewelry and my dad was the Sales person who sold to the buying houses (for department stores).
They did okay, thanks to my Dad's skill of loving all the buyers, giving them gift samples and making them friends. I'm not sure how well he could read. And, when I went off to University he wrote me notes that were hard to understand except for the big heart on the bottom next to his signature DAD.
When I wrote my first book, I gave him the first copy off press. He never talked very much in his last years, and he was 97 when he passed away. When I looked into the end table next to his bed to find his bible. sitting there was my first copy of my first book. There was nothing else in the drawer.
On this Father's Day...if I had one wish it would be to have one more Day with my Dad...to tell him how much I loved him,
I didn't have my hubby around but he got our Father's Day cards today. It was great timing. I sent them out two weeks ago....and they just made it.....YAY!
Thanks, AR. Happy Father's Day to all the other Dads.
I have been away from the computer in order to spend yesterday at the Playboy Jazz Festival in LA with my wife and daughter (and boyfriend) and for brunch this morning...so no post about Father's Day. I will be writing about the festival with some great pics, tho'.
Happy Father's Day to myself and the rest of the dads...
