Someone has been sick in this house for 2 weeks. First it started with my son. He had 'flu like symptoms' but did not have the flu. It took him a few days to recover and only missed 2 days of school. We were hoping for the same thing with my daughter when she suddenly had a fever on Wednesday Night. Well... not so lucky. We took her to the doctor when her fever would not go down from 103.7

They tested her for the flu. And I don't know about you, but it looks very uncomfortable. The test is done by taking a LONG q-tip looking thing and sticking it through your nose and way to the back of your head. Okay, maybe thats a little exaggerated but you get the picture. The poor thing could still feel it later on in the night. Anyway, the doctor confirmed that my daughter does in fact have the swine flu.

Contrary to what many had heard, swine flu should run its course like any other flu. I guess its very serious for children under the age of 6 and over the age of 65. Everyone in the middle will get fevers, chills, etc. but really just needs to continue taking the meds prescribed by the doctor, perhaps a cold bath to help lower the temperature, and lots of liquids.

For now, my daughter will be staying home with me and hopefully will be back in school on Monday.

Interesting how quickly this swine flu has gone around. The doctor mentioned that he has about 17 confirmed cases a day. So, contrary to my post about the proper way to shake hands, try to avoid a lot of contact. Shaking hands, coughing, and sneezing are a few ways that this flu is passed on. Be sure to wash your hands often and carry hand sanitizer.

If you do catch the swine flu, go see your doctor. They will prescriibe some meds to help you through it. Ultimately, the flu will run its course within about a week or so.

Have a great day and try to stay healthy.

John - I'm sorry to hear about your daughter.  A couple of my friends here in Austin have had it, too.  I guess this makes me especially protective of my littler kids.

Thank you Paul and Jason. She should be fine in a few days. For now she will  just rest up. She loves that fact that she misses school. Her temperature has kept below 102 so far today. Yesterday was the baths and cold clothes on her head.

Hi John - Glad you are able to be her during the crisis.  Children need their parents at these vulnerable times in there lives.  It helps if you can keep the sick child away from the healthy people in the household to prevent the spread.

My friend here in Miami was visiting family in NY and his little infant baby caught the swine flu from the cousins.  Mom and Dad took turns taking care of the baby to prevent the spread to themselves.

Eileen - I heard it wasn't a good thing for infants. I'm assuming they are back to normal now?

Hope she feels better soon John!  I think we all had it at the early part of the summer - our symptoms sounded exactly as described and it moved quickly thru our house. While we didn't get tested at the time I really think we had it. How are you feeling?

Hi Karen - So far I am feeling great. Who knows if I'll get it or my wife. I'm assuming we will get it at some point. My son felt bad last week, but it back to normal. He didn't have the flu, but had flu like symptoms (thats what the doctor said). Sidney hasn't had much of a fever today, but thats because of the meds. We'll see how she does in the next few hours.

Bless you, John.  I hope you don't get it.  I was in the grocery store a couple days ago.  A guy turned his head to avoid sneezing on the checker and turned around and sneezed my way.  I am hoping to avoid getting the flu.

Thats horrible Shirley. I would think he would just put his head down and sneeze. I hope you don't get anything from it.

John,

I am so praying this thing doesn't start knocking on my door, but with all of the kids in school sick one way or another, I'm afraid it might be inevitable!

Hope she's feeling better soon!

That's horrible!  Swine Flu is going around Austin very quickly, but thus far, no confirmed cases at Alyssa's school, so we're good.  However, Strep did go around and both Alyssa and I got it a couple of weeks ago.

John - I hope your daughter recovers quickly.  Mine has been running a low (100.5) fever all day.  I'm crossing my fingers that it is just a lack of sleep.

Sheila - Its been going around like crazy here. Luckily, it does not stay for a long time. Seems like its one really bad day, but then gets much better after 24 hours.

Donna - They had so many cases confirmed, they stopped notifying parents here. I think after the initial scare, notifications slowed down.

Thank you Erik. Its been 5 days now and she is ready to go back to school. As I mentioned to Sheila, its a 24 hour deal. She was burning up the first day, we gave her 2 baths to help, some meds, and a lot of rest. Each day she has been getting better and better. Today she has a small cough, but not contagious and she doesnt feel bad.

Thanks Cynthia. I think I'm great, but thats just my opinion :-)   She is doing well. Has an irritating cough, but nothing serious at all. She's back in school and ready to go.

Hope she's good to go now John. My wife's nephew had the Swine Flu about a month or so ago and it wasn't too bad for him at all.

She is doing Great JL. I think that everyone was afraid of this thing because no one knew anything about it. There were people that past because of it, but from my understanding they were under 6 or over 65. Seems thats where most of the risk is. I've spoken with many people who have had young children get it, they addressed the symptoms, and the children got better. For my daughter, it was a really high fever and luckily nothing too serious.

The swine flu is something to take very serious, but I do want to let everyone know that despite the name, you can't get the flu from pigs! This is a picture of my daughter and our pet pig, don't you just want to give her a big kiss!
