Moncton, the second largest city in New Brunswick with well over 60,000 residents, is located in the easternmost corner of the Province in Westmorland County. Moncton's unofficial nickname is the Hub City, likely for two reasons. First because it was formerly a railroad hub, headquarters of the Intercolonial Railway and secondly because of its location at the geographic center of the three Maritime Provinces.

All highway traffic between New England as well as the rest of Canada West of New Brunswick and the three other Atlantic Provinces East of New Brunswick passes by Moncton on the Trans Canada Highway.
(However there are three auto ferries that cross the Bay of Fundy to Nova Scotia, one from Saint John, New Brunswick to Digby, Nova Scotia, one from Bar Harbour, Maine to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia and one from Portland  Maine to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.)

Moncton is located between two very different bodies of water and their ecosystems. The Northumberland Strait features shallow waters, moderate tide heights, and warm sandy beaches. The upper Bay of Fundy features deep, cool waters, the highest tides in the world and a rugged coastline.
